All'indebolimento di Trump non corrisponderà l'indebolimento delle Big Tech. Anzi. Potranno decidere di provare a gestire direttamente il potere. Vance è lì per questo. Come dimostra l'utilissimo articolo di Kettmaier. [Responsible AI] Algoactivism, Martin Wiener

by Daniele Quercia

Algoactivism: How Platform Workers Contest Algorithmic Management Martin Wiener, TU Dresden, Germany Format: 35 min talk + 25 min Q&A Online meeting<https://teams.microsoft.com/meet/334384836288868?p=MHORpt8DHT8NHfhGmt> Algorithmic management (AM) has become a defining feature of online labor platforms (OLPs), profoundly shaping platform workers’ control over their working conditions. Prior research has documented diverse forms of worker resistance to AM—or algoactivism—yet existing studies rest on two problematic assumptions. First, they often assume that algoactivistic practices are uniformly accessible and arise directly from workers’ perceptions of structural constraints. Second, they assume that such practices are primarily reactive forms of resistance broadly targeted at the OLP’s AM system. These assumptions obscure heterogeneity in workers’ motivations and resources, as well as variation in how algoactivistic practices unfold. This study develops a more nuanced understanding of platform workers’ algoactivism by tracing how corresponding practices emerge through situated, reflective, and resource-dependent processes. Drawing on the contested terrain lens from labor process theory, we conceptualize the interplay between OLPs and workers as an ongoing struggle over control of working conditions. We examine this struggle in the context of Uber, a widely recognized extreme case of AM. Using a computer-assisted grounded theory approach that integrates topic modeling with qualitative coding procedures across multiple data sources, we develop a process-theoretical model of how platform workers contest AM. Our model centers on three recurring dynamics—reassessing terrain, exploring opportunities for contestation, and contesting terrain through algoactivistic practices—and yields two core theoretical contributions. First, we show that worker algoactivism depends on continual terrain reassessments and uneven capacities to engage in three forms of resourcing: algorithm, market, and voice resourcing. Second, we theorize algoactivism as a heterogeneous and multi-arena phenomenon comprising self-optimizing, distancing, and confronting practices that vary in their logics, targets, and durability. Together, these contributions advance a more dynamic and agentic understanding of worker algoactivism and provide actionable insights for the design and governance of platform-mediated work. Martin holds the Chair of Business Information Systems, esp. Business Engineering at TU Dresden, Germany. He is also an Affiliated Researcher at FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg (Germany) and the Stockholm School of Economics Institute for Research (Sweden). Before joining TU Dresden, he was an Associate Professor at Bentley University, USA. His research focuses on algorithmic control and management, digital transformation processes, human-AI collaboration, and value creation through open data. His work has been published in leading Information Systems journals, including MIS Quarterly (MISQ), Information Systems Research (ISR), and the Journal of Management Information Systems (JMIS). Giacomo

"Misinformation and smear campaign towards GrapheneOS"

by J.C. DE MARTIN

https://x.com/GrapheneOS/status/2116658719022841917?a=hnY6W7-42oVzl5eUCRw&s… There's a major state sponsored misinformation and smear campaign towards GrapheneOS in the Netherlands and Germany. The misinformation campaign includes unsubstantiated security claims not holding up to scrutiny to scare people away from it. They're also heavily misrepresenting who uses it overall. These smear campaigns conflate GrapheneOS with forks and modifications of it sold by shady companies. Those usually include a device management app to remotely manage the devices of their customers as if they're employees. These are largely not GrapheneOS devices or have preinstalled malware apps. A common tactic being used in these smear campaigns is to make unsubstantiated and outright false claims about the capabilities of forensic data extraction tools. They misrepresent how they get into devices. They want to scare people into using far less secure devices which are easier to exploit. France, Germany, Spain and the Netherlands are becoming increasingly authoritarian surveillance states with an ongoing crackdown against privacy. It's happening throughout the whole EU and it's likely both secure devices and end-to-end encryption without backdoors are going to end up outlawed. There are a bunch of companies based in the EU selling phones with drastically worse privacy and security than an iPhone including Jolla, Volla, Murena and iodé. These products are effectively backdoored by not providing standard privacy and security patches/protections while misleading users. France and other EU countries are actively cracking down on legitimate privacy and security projects while supporting unsafe products within their control. These products make it far easier to remotely exploit devices and also to bypass encryption to extract data. They're phony privacy products. Each of the companies we've listed have participated in the misinformation and smear campaigns against GrapheneOS. Jolla spent years working closely with Putin's regime. Volla, Murena and iodé are building an EU Play Integrity API. None provides the crucial standard privacy patches/protections. Murena is directly assisting with state anti-privacy campaigns smearing highly private and secure devices as mainly benefiting criminals. They've repeatedly falsely claimed GrapheneOS is mainly used by criminals. Here are 2 of many examples: https://x.com/GrapheneOS/status/2040887784253141142 https://clubic.com/actualite-604786-murena-e-os-interview.html GrapheneOS, end-to-end encrypted messaging apps, Monero and other projects are being targeted with state and corporate propaganda and anti-privacy laws. Meanwhile, the same governments heavily fund and support phony privacy projects clearly downgrading privacy and security compared to an iPhone. GrapheneOS is only an initial target for these state actors and their sycophants in corporate news organizations. Apple heavily works on protecting users against exploits too. It would be much harder to convince the public that an iPhone is for criminals so they're starting with open source.
