Baud è un politologo e scrittore che da anni pubblica saggi di successo sui conflitti in corso alla frontiera orientale dell'Europa e in Medio Oriente. Appare raramente sui media più ascoltati e letti dal largo pubblico in quanto porta avanti una critica documentata della politica statunitense e Nato. Smaschera con prove raramente attaccabili le menzogne della propaganda. Se il libero pensiero scompare anche dai social l'obiettivo della disinformazione totale dei cittadini occidentali sarà interamente raggiunto. Nelle società cosiddette autocratiche si ha contezza che i media e la stampa siano uno strumento del potere. Un russo, un cinese, un turco leggono con beneficio di inventario la stampa nazionale. L'operazione riuscita in Occidente, che fa comprendere come il sogno distopico di Orwell si realizzi con velocità sorprendente, è data dalla fiducia inculcata nella maggioranza della società civile di vivere in Paesi liberi, governati dallo Stato di diritto, in uno spazio mediatico che rispecchia la libera espressione. Vorrei riassumere gli argomenti oggettivi che da tempo illustro per confutare questa falsa sicurezza nostrana. L'ex rappresentante della Politica estera dell'Ue, Borrell, ha stabilito che in Europa non vi sia libero accesso ai media russi. La censura è stata giustificata con l'intento di voler proteggere i cittadini europei dalla disinformazione del nemico. Sappiamo bene che questo è stato ed è l'alibi delle dittature. A esso le nostre più alte cariche istituzionali si sono adeguate, biasimando in numerose occasioni la società civile italiana di farsi plagiare dai cosiddetti filo putiniani. L'epiteto è stato riservato a tutti gli analisti che nell'esame del conflitto russo-ucraino hanno illustrato le dinamiche risalenti agli anni Novanta in grado di provare l'espansionismo strategico e offensivo della Nato nei confronti di Mosca. La maggior parte di questi analisti non ha avuto accesso alle testate e reti che hanno gli indici di ascolto più elevati. Alcuni sono stati diffamati, querelati e linciati pubblicamente con menzogne evidenti. Su Corriere e Repubblica la sottoscritta è stata definita “pseudo ex ambasciatrice”. Basta una semplice ricerca in Internet per verificare come questo insulto diffamante sia una oggettiva menzogna. Con riferimento al conflitto israelo-palestinese si è fatto di peggio. Gli analisti non inclini a giustificare l'occupazione e lo sterminio di innocenti a Gaza quale operazione della civiltà contro la barbarie e come conseguenza del diritto di Israele a difendersi sono stati considerati antisemiti, in alcuni casi querelati per istigazione all'odio. È vero, negli spettacoli televisivi (non li chiamerò programmi come qualcuno vorrebbe) dedicati alla politica vengono ammessi in netta minoranza due, tre, quattro voci del dissenso, molto caratterizzate che servono soltanto a infondere negli spettatori (non sono ascoltatori) l'illusione che tutte le opinioni siano rappresentate. Naturalmente il dissenso ammesso è implicitamente denigrato, deriso. Passa il messaggio subliminale in molti casi che gli analisti fuori dal coro siano cabarettisti, incompetenti, non degni di attenzione da parte dei cittadini perbene e moderati. Le quattro agenzie di stampa internazionali copiano molte volte le veline diffuse dai servizi occidentali e i giornali con copia e incolla diffondono il verbo utilizzando le stesse espressioni. Se confrontate Corriere o Repubblica con La Libre Belgique, Le Monde e persino The Guardian, vedete assonanze inquietanti. Lo stesso accade con poche eccezioni in radio e tv, Rai News, La7 recitano il catechismo caro ai media europei. I pochi consapevoli dello stato abietto dell'informazione occidentale sono costretti a ricercare le notizie in Rete, tv indipendenti, youtuber competenti che intervistano personaggi scomodi da Mearsheimer a Chomski, a Ilan Pappe, a Moni Ovadia, a Jeffrey Sachs, a Baud, al colonnello Mc Gregor, a ex diplomatici britannici e statunitensi ignoti alle audience dei conduttori di grido europei. Si tratta di una minoranza di autori e utenti consapevoli che non cedono al linguaggio stereotipato e semplificato, alla retorica in base alla quale Biden è un illustre e puro statista mentre Putin o Xi terribili dittatori assetati di sangue, l'Ucraina una democrazia che difende la libertà occidentale e altri luoghi comuni venduti senza vergogna anche da persone colte, istruite, editorialisti stimabili all'opinione pubblica. Ecco perché la notizia della censura a Gabellini mi ha colpito. Using the term ‘artificial intelligence’ in product descriptions reduces purchase intentions By Eric Hollenbeck, Carson College of Business July 30, 2024 PULLMAN, Wash. – Companies may unintentionally hurt their sales by including the words “artificial intelligence” when describing their offerings that use the technology, according to a study led by Washington State University researchers. In the study, published in the Journal of Hospitality Marketing & Management, researchers conducted experimental surveys with more than 1,000 adults in the U.S. to evaluate the relationship between AI disclosure and consumer behavior. The findings consistently showed products described as using artificial intelligence were less popular, according to Mesut Cicek, clinical assistant professor of marketing and lead author of the study. “When AI is mentioned, it tends to lower emotional trust, which in turn decreases purchase intentions,” he said. “We found emotional trust plays a critical role in how consumers perceive AI-powered products.” In the experiments, the researchers included questions and descriptions across diverse product and service categories. For example, in one experiment, participants were presented with identical descriptions of smart televisions, the only difference being the term “artificial intelligence” was included for one group and omitted for the other. The group that saw AI included in the product description indicated they were less likely to purchase the television. Researchers also discovered that negative response to AI disclosure was even stronger for “high-risk” products and services, those which people commonly feel more uncertain or anxious about buying, such as expensive electronics, medical devices or financial services. Because failure carries more potential risk, which may include monetary loss or danger to physical safety, mentioning AI for these types of descriptions may make consumers more wary and less likely to purchase, according to Cicek. “We tested the effect across eight different product and service categories, and the results were all the same: it’s a disadvantage to include those kinds of terms in the product descriptions,” Cicek said. Cicek said the findings provide valuable insights for companies. “Marketers should carefully consider how they present AI in their product descriptions or develop strategies to increase emotional trust. Emphasizing AI may not always be beneficial, particularly for high-risk products. Focus on describing the features or benefits and avoid the AI buzzwords,” he said. Federal Judge: Google Is a Monopoly Today on TAP: The Justice Department just won its case against Google. by David Dayen, Luke Goldstein August 5, 2024 Judge Amit Mehta of the D.C. District Court ruled today that Google violated the Sherman Act by buying its way onto browsers and devices and making it nearly impossible to avoid its search engine. “Google is a monopolist, and it has acted as one to maintain its monopoly,” Judge Mehta wrote in his 286-page ruling. “It has violated Section 2 of the Sherman Act.” The decision in the first major monopolization case in 25 years is a big win for the Justice Department’s Antitrust Division, and reinforces the aggressive antitrust policies of the Biden administration. It shows that, in fact, law enforcers claiming that there was a new era of entrenchment and consolidation in the U.S. economy got it right. The ruling has major implications for future developments in the tech industry, as the companies that dominated Web 2.0’s platform era are working to do the same thing with artificial intelligence. It also could affect subsequent cases being waged right now against Facebook, Amazon, and Apple. In particular, Judge Mehta found that Google’s practice of paying for access to be the default search engine drove its dominance, which amounted to taking close to 90 percent of all search queries in 2020, and nearly 95 percent of all search queries on mobile devices. Google becoming the default browser raised the costs of competition from other search engines to impractical levels. Mehta was not swayed by the argument that “competition is just a click away” and that users could easily change default settings to use another browser. “Roughly 50 percent of all general search queries in the United States flow through a search access point covered by one of the challenged contracts,” he wrote, referring to special deals whereby Google paid browser or device companies to become the default option. “Another 20 percent of all general search queries in the United States flow through user-downloaded Chrome, which defaults to Google.” It is an unequivocal ruling for Google’s dominance over the search engine function, but there are caveats. Mehta was not swayed by a small part of the plaintiff’s argument, mainly laid out by the state AGs, that Google had leveraged its monopoly over the search function to control the back-end digital advertising supply line and distort the market. Mehta ruled narrowly that since Google holds market power over search, it can charge “supracompetitive” rates for the text ad placements that appear on its search pages. But the states were more ambitious, claiming that Google controlled adtech markets through SA360 and used that anti-competitively to effectively cut Microsoft’s Bing out from its closed system. That could prove to be a difficult hurdle to overcome in the DOJ’s separate antitrust case filed in 2023 against Google, targeting its monopolization of adtech. Mehta held that the DOJ did not clearly define the relevant market for search advertising and thus Google could not be held liable for abusing a monopoly over it. The DOJ will likely have to better define the market in the adtech case, set to begin this fall in front of a different judge in the Eastern District of Virginia. The Google search case will now move to a remedies phase. Judge Mehta will have to determine what penalty should be imposed for Google’s exclusive dealing to get its search engine included as the default on browsers and devices. He could unwind the deals, which cost Google $26 billion in 2021. He could require browsers and devices to provide options to users for which search engine to use.
