ITC was founded back in 1955 by enthusiastic scientists and engineers who were willing to deploy networks in a holistic way. Since then, it has established a multi-decade tradition as the primary forum for presenting and discussing the latest technical advances in the broad areas of teletraffic models, network systems, and measurements. Working Conditions, Worker’s Health and Managerial Ideology in AI Data Annotation Platforms This presentation builds upon the upcoming research conducted by DiPLab/LATRAPS titled “Microwork in Brazil: Who Are the Workers Behind Artificial Intelligence?” to offer a unique perspective on the data production for AI training in Brazil. The focus of this presentation is to analyze the impact of working conditions on the health of individuals engaged in informal platform jobs in Brazil, particularly emphasizing the relationship between these conditions and managerial ideology. The data sources utilized in this analysis also include a digital ethnography conducted between 2020 and 2021, analysis of platform websites terms of service, and in-depth interviews with Brazilian microworkers. By examining the four mediation systems of economics, politics, ideology, and psychology, the presentation argues that managerial ideology, intertwined with the Californian ideology, plays a crucial role in labor management. The primary objective of this ideology is to ensure worker compliance with the platforms while concealing labor conflicts by shifting them to the individual level, thus creating an environment of individualized suffering. Over the past decade, considerable research and industry efforts have focused on addressing biases and minimizing personal subjectivities in data collection, curation, classification, and labeling by data workers. In this talk, I propose a shift of perspective to emphasize *the importance of labor in data production* and explore power imbalances inherent in data work that significantly shape datasets and systems. I argue that enhancing labor conditions in data work and leveraging data workers’ expertise can improve data quality and help develop ML systems that are more inclusive and just. Starting from the assumption that power imbalances are the problem, not just bias, leads to fundamentally different research questions and methods of inquiry. In this sense, I highlight *the need for interdisciplinary dialogue and cooperation in the study of data quality and data work*. Her research is centered on exploring the production of ground-truth data for machine learning, with a specific focus on labor conditions and power dynamics involved in data generation and labeling. Dr. Miceli's work sheds light on the ethical and social implications of AI development, especially data work. L'articolo sta circolando apparentemente come unico riferimento[1]. In realtà la riforma del copyright in Giappone risale al 2018[2] e da allora permette il text and data mining (TDM) per ogni utilizzo da ogni fonte, anche protetta da copyright. E' stata redatta per permettere lo sviluppo di nuove tecnologie come IoT, ma fa anche riferimento esplicito all'AI. A suo tempo la riforma è stata commentata anche in Europa [3]. La riforma permette quindi l'utilizzo di fonti protette da copyright per l'addestramento di modelli di AI. Tuttavia, come anche in altre giurisdizioni, lascia irrisolta la domanda della protezione da copyright dell'output generato da AI.[4] Questa veloce ricerca è stata fatta con l'aiuto del mio amico Jun Miyazaki[5], esperto di innovazione tecnologica di Tokyo, con l'utilizzo di Bing Chat, e da me con ChatGPT attraverso il plugin AskYourPDF.
