San Diego: contro i lampioni "intelligenti" (da "Logic")

*The Oversight Bloc *Lilly Irani, Khalid Alexander /How community organizers and tech workers joined forces to rein in San Diego’s surveillance state.// / In July 2019, one of us, Khalid Alexander, received a tip from a fellow San Diego community organizer. “You should be paying attention to the city’s new streetlights.” The message continued, “Apparently, they have cameras attached to them.” Alexander lived in one of the many predominantly Black and brown neighborhoods in San Diego that was under constant police surveillance, including by “gang suppression units” that watch, harass, and document residents. He feared that streetlights with cameras on them could supercharge these efforts. Two weeks later, Alexander showed up at a public library for a forum about the streetlights program (which the city named the Smart Streetlights Program). The only other people at the meeting were the presenters: a police captain, a city staffer, and an executive from General Electric (GE), the company that produced the new streetlights. Their presentation began with an infomercial for the technology, a city-wide network of thousands of LED streetlights mounted with cameras that recorded video around-the-clock. The footage was uploaded to the cloud, where city agencies could use software to count cars, pedestrians, and who knows what else. This company says it’s developing a system that can recognize your face from just your DNA | MIT Technology Review

No witnesses. No camera footage. No obvious suspects or motives. Just a bit of hair on the sleeve of the victim’s jacket. DNA from the cells of one strand is copied and compared against a database. No match comes back, and the case goes cold. Corsight AI, a facial recognition subsidiary of the Israeli AI company Cortica, purports to be devising a solution for that sort of situation by using DNA to create a model of a face that can then be run through a facial recognition system. It is a task that experts in the field regard as scientifically untenable. Corsight unveiled its “DNA to Face” product in a presentation by chief executive officer Robert Watts and executive vice president Ofer Ronen intended to court financiers at the Imperial Capital Investors Conference in New York City on December 15. It was part of the company’s overall product road map, which also included movement and voice recognition. The tool “constructs a physical profile by analyzing genetic material collected in a DNA sample,” according to a company slide deck viewed by surveillance research group IPVM and shared with MIT Technology Review. A photo of Corsight's investor presentation showing its product roadmap that features "voice to face", "DNA to face" and "movement" as an expansion of its face recognition capabilities. Corsight declined a request to answer questions about the presentation and its product road map. “We are not engaging with the press at the moment as the details of what we are doing are company confidential,” Watts wrote in an email. But marketing materials show that the company is focused on government and law enforcement applications for its technology. Its advisory board consists only of James Woolsey, a former director of the CIA, and Oliver Revell, a former assistant director of the FBI.

si, molto interessante, grazie ben fatto qualche piccola contraddizione interna e qualche non considerazione del resto del quadro normativo es. sync local/cloud (potrebbe essere anche IPFS, per dire) serve proprio per miticare il problema SPOF inclusione/esclusione non e' un problema specifico ma generale per il quale ci sono misure in atto (e ce ne saranno sempre) dipendenza da GA: forse non conosce bene il DMA, il problema e' indirizzato li'. New special issue in the /Journal of Social Computing/, “Technology Ethics in Action: Critical and Interdisciplinary Perspectives” *Summary* This special issue interrogates the discourses and impacts of “tech ethics.” As many institutions embrace tech ethics in response to concerns about digital technology, it is necessary to consider the impacts, limits, and opportunities of these initiatives. The articles in this issue analyze tech ethics as a practical and political endeavor, rather than a primarily philosophical one. What's happened as "tech ethics" has become a widespread discourse? Based on today’s megatrends artificial intelligence (AI), climate change, population aging and others, the author develops scenarios for possible Futures of Work in different regions of the world: Robots have not replaced humans but AI and smart machines have become indispensable parts of our working lives. Efforts to mitigate climate change may fail but still trigger an ecological transformation that leads us into a more sustainable future. Mass production might enter its last decades but people may instead work in small shops and in more agile organizations. Can we work without jobs? In all these transformations AI and the digitalization are likely to play crucial roles. Whatever the future will be in 2030, thinking through such scenarios helps us perceiving opportunities and risks today, and shape the Future of Work that we want. *Short Bio of Daniel Samaan:* Daniel Samaan is an Economist and Senior Researcher at the International Labour Organization (ILO) in Geneva. He is an expert in the analysis of global labour market trends, specialized in the links with globalization, new technologies/AI, sustainable development, and a new work culture. He has been an author and part of the core teams of several ILO reports. His research has been published in peer-reviewed journals and he is a regular public speaker on various labor market topics and on the Future of Work. Daniel previously worked at the economic policy research center, SCEPA, and in the consulting industry in New York City. Alterity processing refers to data infrastructures, knowledge practices and bureaucratic procedures through which populations unknown to European actors are translated into “European-legible” identities. Drawing upon a *Science and Technology Studies perspective*, the lecture provides empirical evidence and theoretical reflections on the co-production of migrant people and Europe as a polity through the digitization of registration and identification of third-country nationals. It shows how different registration and identification procedures compete to legitimize different chains of actors, data, and metadata as more authoritative than others. Competing procedures have governance implications, as well, with institutional boundaries shifting de facto, if not de jure. In this tension, it is not only the individual Other that is enacted but also specific bureaucratic orders cutting across old and new European actors and distinctive understandings of “Europe.” The lecture draws upon data collected in the context of the *“Processing Citizenship” project* (ERC StG No 714463, https://processingcitizenship.eu/) BIOGRAFIA - e informazioni supplementari [mercoledì148] *Annalisa PELIZZA* is Professor of Science and Technology Studies (STS) at the University of Bologna. By studying how data infrastructures entail broader but unnoticed transformations in the modern order of authority, which are buried in technical minutiae, Pelizza’s work brings tools proper of STS analyses to investigate macro political developments. Platform economy, what is happening around the EU and in particular in Easter Europe?

Dear all, The ETF's study investigates changing patterns of work triggered by digitalisation in the six Eastern Partnership (EaP) countries: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine. It aims in particular to fill the knowledge gaps on emerging platform work in the region, both web-based and on-location. The future of work – New forms of employment in the Eastern Partnership countries: Platform work | ETF (europa.eu) <https://www.etf.europa.eu/en/publications-and-resources/publications/future…> Workers from all the six countries access international Russian- and English-language web-based platforms. The most widespread web-based engagement relates mainly to higher-complexity specialist work in the information and communications technology (ICT) sector (software development and technology) and the creative and multimedia industry, in line with labour market demand.
