Re: [nexa] The whole world should be worried by the ‘siege of Ottawa’. This is about much more than a few anti-vaxx truckers | Arwa Mahdawi | The Guardian
by Giovanni Leghissa
liberale e illuminista: vogliamo diventare come i cinesi?

The whole world should be worried by the ‘siege of Ottawa’. This is about much more than a few anti-vaxx truckers | Arwa Mahdawi | The Guardian
by Alberto Cammozzo
<https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2022/feb/08/ottawa-truckers-prote…>
What the truck is going on in Canada? No offence to Ottawa, but it’s not
the most exciting place in the world. Over the past couple of weeks,
however, the Canadian capital has been embroiled in drama: hundreds of
truckers, ostensibly protesting against vaccine mandates, have brought
the city to a standstill. Members of the so-called “Freedom Truck
Convoy” have been blaring horns, desecrating war memorials and setting
off fireworks
<https://www.cnbc.com/2022/02/07/canada-police-seen-getting-tough-as-trucker…>.
Residents are being driven to distraction. The police chief has called
the situation a “siege
<https://nbcmontana.com/news/coronavirus/mandate-critics-in-us-elsewhere-see…>”;
the Ontario premier called it “an occupation
<https://www.npr.org/2022/02/04/1078415610/covid-canada-gofundme-protests>”.
On Monday, the city’s mayor, Jim Watson, declared a state of emergency
<https://www.theguardian.com/world/2022/feb/07/ottawa-declares-state-of-emer…>.
There’s a lot going on in the world right now. If you’re not Canadian,
then the protest in Ottawa might not be top of your list of things to
worry about. But I’m afraid you should be worried. You should certainly
be paying attention. What’s unfolding in Ottawa is not a grassroots
protest that has spontaneously erupted out of the frustration of local
lorry drivers. Rather, it’s an astroturfed
<https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2012/feb/08/what-is-astroturfing>
movement – one that creates an impression of widespread grassroots
support where little exists – funded by a global network of highly
organised far-right groups and amplified by Facebook’s misinformation
machine. The drama may be centred in Canada, but what is unfolding has
repercussions for us all.
That’s a big claim, so let me break it down. We’ll start with the
Canadian lorry drivers. The people protesting against vaccine mandates,
it can’t be stressed enough, are by no means representative of the
Canadian haulage industry as a whole. Just 10% of cross-border drivers
refused the jabs, according to the Canadian Trucking Alliance (CTA),
meaning that from 15 January they can no longer cross back into Canada
without quarantine. The CTA, along with other major industry
organisations, has disavowed the protest. The protesters don’t represent
the vast majority of lorry drivers, nor are they representative of
public sentiment towards vaccines in Canada – a country where 84% of the
population
<https://health-infobase.canada.ca/covid-19/vaccination-coverage/>,
children included, have received at least one vaccine dose. They are, as
Justin Trudeau has said, a “small fringe”
<https://www.theguardian.com/world/2022/jan/28/canada-truckers-covid-vaccine…>.
They may be a fringe minority, but that doesn’t mean you should (as
Trudeau seems to be doing) downplay or dismiss them. For one, they have
a lot of powerful supporters. The usual crowd of rightwing politicians
in the US, including Donald Trump and Ted Cruz, have been cheering them
on. They have also been getting millions of dollars in funding across
crowdfunding sites from international donors.
“Donations from abroad are quite a common part of any large crowdfunding
campaign,” Ciaran O’Connor, an expert on online extremism at the
Institute for Strategic Dialogue, told Politico
<https://www.politico.com/news/2022/02/06/ottawa-truckers-convoy-galvanizes-…>.
“But the scale of this one is unprecedented.”
Another reason why you should take the Ottawa protests seriously? Thanks
to the wonders of modern technology, fringe groups can have an outsize
influence. I’m sure you’ve heard of troll farms: organised groups that
weaponise social media to spread misinformation, promote division and
influence public opinion. Get this: in the long run-up to the 2020 US
elections, Facebook’s most popular pages for Christian and Black
American content were being run by eastern European troll farms.
According to an internal Facebook report written in late 2019 and leaked
to MIT Technology Review
<https://www.technologyreview.com/2021/09/16/1035851/facebook-troll-farms-re…>,
troll farms were reaching 140 million users every month. Three-quarters
of these users had never followed any of the pages: they’d had the
content thrust upon them by Facebook’s engagement-hungry
content-recommendation system.
“Our platform has given the largest voice in the African American
community to a handful of bad actors, who, based on their media
production practices, have never had an interaction with an African
American,” wrote the report’s author, a former senior-level data
scientist at Facebook. “Instead of users choosing to receive content
from these actors, it is our platform that is choosing to give [these
troll farms] an enormous reach.”
After that report was leaked in September, Facebook made a lot of noises
about how it was aggressively cracking down on troll farms. Has it
followed through on these promises? Meta Platforms, Facebook’s owner,
said on Monday
<https://www.reuters.com/technology/meta-says-it-removed-scammers-canada-con…>
that it had removed dozens of scam pages associated with the convoy
protest from Facebook; however, there are still a huge number of
recently created pages supporting the hauliers, with suspiciously large
numbers of followers. Meanwhile, on Telegram, a social network favoured
by the right, people across the world are urging each other to replicate
the tactics in Canada in their home towns
<https://www.nytimes.com/2022/02/07/world/canada/canada-protesters-ottawa.ht…>.
Canada may not be on the brink of civil war, but what is happening in
Ottawa is one small front in a global information war. And the baddies,
I’m afraid to say, are winning.

cortei in Canada fossero infiltrati provocatori

```
“This has been a long battle”, said Dr Johnny Ryan of the Irish Council for Civil Liberties.
“Today’s decision frees hundreds of millions of Europeans from consent spam, and the
deeper hazard that their most intimate online activities will be passed around by
thousands of companies”.
by Alberto Cammozzo
Leggendo il documento ufficiale di IAB (FAQ), non serve ipotizzare la
cancellazione dei dati: non ci pensano nemmeno.
<https://iabeurope.eu/all-news/apd-ruling-clears-way-for-work-on-developing-…>
APD Ruling Clears Way For Work on Developing TCF into a Formal
GDPR Code of Conduct: IAB Europe Statement on the APD Decision
Announced Today
*2nd February, Brussels, Belgium*: IAB Europe acknowledges the decision
announced today by the Belgian Data Protection Authority (APD) in
connection with its investigation of IAB Europe. We note that the
decision contains no prohibition of the Transparency & Consent Framework
(TCF), as had been requested by the complainants, and that the APD
considers the purported infringements by IAB Europe that it has
identified to be susceptible of being remedied in six months.
We reject the finding that we are a data controller in the context of
the TCF. We believe this finding is wrong in law and will have major
unintended negative consequences going well beyond the digital
advertising industry. We are considering all options with respect to a
legal challenge.
Notwithstanding our grave reservations on the substance of the decision,
we look forward to working with the APD on an action plan to be executed
within the prescribed six months that will ensure the TCF’s continuing
utility in the market. As previously communicated, it has always been
our intention to submit the Framework for approval as a GDPR
transnational Code of Conduct. Today’s decision would appear to clear
the way for work on that to begin.
For more information on the APD decision on IAB Europe and the TCF,
please visit our FAQ document here
caro Giacomo e cari tutti,
commento soltanto la tua
ultima linea:
Intanto migliaia di scuole italiane continuano ad usare Google Classroom.
Io ho comprreso che l'uso di Google Classroom è vietato dalle norme
nazionali e comunitarie. Quindi mi domando e domando a tutti voi:
Perchè la Corte dei Conti e il Garante della Protezione dei Dati
Personali non puniscono i dirigenti scolastici che fanno quella scelta
GDPR enforcer rules that IAB Europe's consent popups are unlawful
by Giacomo Tesio
Google, Amazon, and the entire tracking industry relies on IAB Europe’s
consent system, which has now been found to be illegal following complaints
coordinated by ICCL.
EU data protection authorities find that the consent popups that plagued Europeans
for years are illegal. All data collected through them must be deleted.
This decision impacts Google’s, Amazon’s and Microsoft’s online
advertising businesses.
[...]
The consent popup system known as the “Transparency & Consent Framework”
(TCF) is on 80% of the European internet.
The tracking industry claimed it was a measure to comply with the GDPR.
Today, GDPR enforcers ruled that this consent spam has, in fact,
deprived hundreds of millions of Europeans of their fundamental rights.
[...]
# Deletion of data
All data collected through the TCF must now be deleted by the more than 1,000
companies that pay IAB Europe to use the TCF.
This includes Google’s, Amazon’s and Microsoft’s online advertising businesses.
The decision said those who implement the TCF must “take the appropriate measures,
in line with Articles 24 and 25 GDPR, ensuring that personal data that has
been collected in breach of Articles 5 and 6 GDPR is no longer processed and
removed accordingly”
Io vorrei farvi riflettere su questo: ipotiziamo che Google domani affermi di aver
cancellato tutti i dati raccolti illegalmente sulla base del TCF.
Chi verifica che non sta semplicemente mentendo?
Una volta che i dati sono stati processati e compressi/compilati (ovvero offuscati)
in un software programmato statisticamente (aka "AI") chi andrà a decomprimerli
e deoffuscarli per verificare la loro eliminazione?
Naturalmente si potrebbe imporre a Google di rieseguire tutti i processi di
programmazione statistica (ovvero tutti i "training" delle proprie "AI") da zero
e SENZA quei dati.
Ma dovrebbero rieffettuare tutto il processo in pubblico (rivelando i propri
peziosissimi segreti industriali) altrimenti sarebbe impossibile verificare che tali dati
NON vengano utilizzati.
Sappiamo tutti che questo NON accadrà.
Google continuerà ad utilizzare tutti i dati raccolti, perché nessuno può
veramente dimostrare che lo sta facendo.
Idem Amazon, Microsoft e tutte le aziende grandi (e lontane) abbastanza da poter
deridere la Legge e soprattutto i diritti di noi europei.
Che ci lasciamo deridere.
Intanto migliaia di scuole italiane continuano ad usare Google Classroom.
nemmeno io ho letto il loro lavoro ma se tanto mi da tanto credo che nel
mio lungo backlog di libri da leggere questo vada molto in fondo,
/credo/ mi basterebbe un bigino
ecco perché approfitterei molto volentieri di sentire il succo del
contenuto in un prossimo incontro nexiano (che faccia tosta che ho!)
per comprendere il contesto nel quale si muove il libro giova avere
un'idea del Sunstein-pensiero et al:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cass_Sunstein
tutto teso nel /disperato/ tentativo di /rendere indipendenti/ gli atti
amministrativi [1] dalla legittimità del potere esecutivo, conferita dal
sovrano che nelle res publiche è il popolo
in particolare mi fa specie la sua propaganda del "paternalismo
libertario" /condensato/ in "Nudge"
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nudge_(book)
una versione neuro-psico-tecno dell'essenza del totalitarismo light (?)
condensata nel refrain "sappiano noi, /scientificamente/, cosa è bene
per te" ("quindi ti guidiamo nelle scelte che predeterminiamo
indipendentemente dal tuo /desiderio/", ma questo ovviamente non lo
dicono, rovinerebbe il giochino)
in poche parole l'opposto dell'illuminismo secondo Kant:
http://btfp.sp.unipi.it/dida/kant_7/ar01s04.xhtml
«Risposta alla domanda: che cos'è l'illuminismo?»
--8<---------------cut here---------------start------------->8---
L'illuminismo è l'uscita dell'essere umano dallo stato di minorità di
cui egli stesso è colpevole.
--8<---------------cut here---------------end--------------->8---
essere umano è plurale majestatis, nessuno si salva da solo.
la connessione con "il digitale" e quindi coi temi più propriamente
nexiani diventa piuttosto evidente quando si considera che la "choiche
architecture" [2] - secondo la quale non siamo persone/cittadine ma
consumatori/utenti e che è /connaturata/ alle tecniche di nudging - è
l'/analogo/ delle interfacce utente per il software, che guidando
l'utente tra scelte predeterminate e ne /mascherano/ il funzionamento
interno (gli studiosi sanno che anche l'architettura urbana è
un'interfaccia in questo senso, per fare un altro esempio di "choiche
architecture" fisica, come ad es. le panchine scomode fatte apposta per
non bighellonare in certi luoghi)
vorrei qui sottolineare come anche nel nudging "non digitale" le norme
amministrative (le nostre interfacce) sono fatte appositamente per
mascherare /scientificamente/ il funzionamento interno, cioè la vera
ratio che le determina
guardando /dietro/ alle interfacce, la connessione diventa ancora più
evidente se si considera il "capture model" - e più precisamente le
"Grammars of Action" - descritto nel lavoro di Philip E. Agre
«Surveillance and capture: Two models of privacy» (1994) che a mio
modesto avviso rimane una pietra miliare tra i saggi sulla "tecnologia
digitale" [3] e NON è limitato alla sola privacy... e manco al digitale
l'app governativa è quindi il mezzo perfetto per applicare queste
tecniche
in poche parole /esattamente/ l'opposto della partecipazione che ci
viene promessa e /richietsa/ come cittadini della res
publica... promessa e richiesta collettivamente da noi stessi in quanto
popolo sovrano: ecco allora chiara e limpida l'illegittimità di tutto
ciò
fondamentale, a mio avviso, il riferimento alla tesi freudiana
un tema da sviluppare senz'altro
se la psicoanalisi ha da dire qualcosa sul politico, può farlo solo
partendo da lì: il comune, ciò che unisce, ciò che permette la costruzione
di un collettivo democratico, va costruito a partire dalla morte
ma forse non è questa la sede per approfondire
si e no allo stesso tempo, per quanto mi riguarda. La mia posizione e'
che il discorso come lo imposti tu poteva bastare, almeno in teoria,
fino a meta'/fine anni 80. Quando l'informatica non era ancora una
necessita' quotidiana per tutti.
Se ALLORA si fossero fatti discorsi come il tuo a livello politico, ma
in forme rilevanti per tutti, non solo quelli a cui piaceva
programmare, e se ALLORA se ne fosse fatta subito un'implementazione
di massa, a partire dalle scuole, probabilmente sarebbe bastato, e
sicuramente oggi avremmo una popolazione molto piu' matura.
Ma ormai quello e' un discorso sullo stesso piano del "se oggi ci
fosse ancora l'impero romano".
OGGI, nella realta' in cui ci stiamo parlando, il dibattito non e' fra
nascondere e chiedere di conoscere. So benissimo che e' in buona fede
ma ormai a me, "dibattiamo se nascondere la complessita' o chiedere di
conoscerla" suona esattamente come
"che facciamo con tutti questi poveri cristi che stanno annegando
intorno a noi? Li tiriamo subito a bordo, oppure ci impegniamo con
tutto il cuore a organizzare corsi di nuoto? salviamo questi che
annegano intorno a noi, o organizziamo corsi di nuoto?".. il tutto
senza rendersi conto che se non si tirano a bordo subito tutte quelle
persone, non ci sono abbastanza braccia per portare la nave in porto
E francamente, la parola "nascondere" non la vorrei proprio sentire,
e' davvero infelice e fuori luogo. In passato mi e' stato addirittura
detto esplicitamente da da altri, su questa lista, che io vorrei
deliberatamente nascondere la conoscenza agli ignoranti, ed e' una
cosa che mi manda in bestia. Io non voglio nascondere niente. Non
tiratemi in discorsi del genere.
Io dico promuoviamo tutta la conoscenza che volete, ci mancherebbe
altro. Mi fate un piacere. Campo anche insegnando software libero,
piu' chiediamo di conoscere la complessita' e piu' io fatturo.
Chiamatemi, sempre a disposizione.
Ma se vogliamo parlare anche di lasciare il mondo migliore di come
l'abbiamo trovato, bisogna levarsi dalla testa la speranza che far
conoscere la complessita' possa avere effetti concreti IN TEMPO UTILE,
se si corre solo appresso a quella. Devi ANCHE mettere pezze
equivalenti al salvare gli annegati di cui sopra, devi accettare che
se non fai anche quello da subito la platea di chi potrebbe volere la
conoscenza si restringe sempre piu' ogni anno.
> Nutrire la pigrizia degli utenti per aumentare il loro numero:
parliamo di esseri umani o cittadini, per favore. Forse e' proprio
parlare di utenti che e' sbagliato.
che fai, li butti? Ma soprattutto:
> In cosa la loro presenza dovrebbe rassicurarci? Semmai mi spaventa,
> mi rende insicuro, mi costringe a farmi carico di una responsabilità
> di cui loro non vogliono farsi carico.
Se puo' aiutare a vedere il mondo che vedo io, prova a metterla in
questi termini: tu sei in alto mare in una piccola scialuppa piena di
salvagenti, e quegli "utenti" sono esseri umani che ORMAI sono
attaccati alla scialuppa dal corso degli eventi, e non sapendo nuotare
ti stanno tirando a fondo. Puoi tirargli i salvagente, o dirgli "buoni
tutti, che ora vi insegno a nuotare". Che fai?
