Technology's moral debt: #ecnEHESS onilne seminar ft. Shannon Vallor (May 20, 2021, 7PM)

Dear all/carissim* nexian*, what if, instead of talking about "ethical AI" we acknowledged that innovators, industrialists, and governments have incurred a "technological moral debt" towards civil society? What if, in the aftermath of the Covid pandemic, this debt were finally due? On Thursday 20 May 2021, 7PM-9PM (Paris Time), I'll have the pleasure to discuss these topics with Prof. Shannon Vallor, philosopher and Baillie Gifford Chair in the Ethics of Data and AI at the University of Edinburgh (UK). In charts: facial recognition technology — and how much do we trust it?

Advocates say the technology improves public safety and security. But critics say it is intrusive and often inaccurate, and they call for regulation to prevent law enforcement agencies from misusing it. One of the biggest problems is the technology’s technical bias against women and people of colour. Last month, the European Commission published draft regulations on the use of artificial intelligence <https://www.ft.com/content/360faa3e-4110-4f38-b618-dd695deece90> that included restrictions on facial recognition technologies. It said Canada and Japan were also looking at the proposals closely. Ne ha parlato con Casey Newton, uno dei maggiori autori di inchieste in questo campo su The Verge, ma le sue parole (come quelle di tanti altri colleghi) sono state riprese anche da Jacopo Franchi nel suo nuovo libro Gli obsoleti. Direttiva europea sul copyright

Ci siamo, mancano pochi giorni ... L’Italia ha recepito la direttiva europea sul copyright. Con l’ok del parlamento è ormai tracciata la strada verso il decreto attuativo che dovrà implementare la direttiva 2019/790 nell’ordinamento italiano. Il tutto dovrà avvenire entro la scadenza del 7 giugno, fissata dalle regole di funzionamento dell’Unione. Antonio
