Facebook Let Kids Rack Up Charges on Parents' Credit Cards and Did Nothing to Stop It

Newly unsealed court documents show that Facebook was aware that underage children routinely used their parents’ payment information to spend large sums of money on in-game purchases, and the company chose not to fix the problem. For years, it allowed for what it called “friendly fraud” because it feared implementing protections would harm revenue, according to the documents. In 2016, Facebook settled a class-action lawsuit brought by parents of children who were tricked into unwittingly making purchases with real money while playing free video games hosted on the social media platform. Despite its recognition of the problem, internal discussions show that Facebook decided it would be best to fight refund requests and allow the problem to persist. Documents related to the case were placed under seal because Facebook successfully argued that releasing them to the public could harm its business. Reveal, a publication run by the Center for Investigative Reporting, argued that these documents were in the public interest; last week, a judge granted Reveal’s request to release the documents. Facebook to integrate Instagram, Messenger and WhatsApp | Technology | The Guardian

The plans are said to come directly from the Facebook chief executive, Mark Zuckerberg, the New York Times has reported, and would involve rewriting the basic software of the three apps to ensure they were interoperable. A WhatsApp user would be able to, for instance, text an Instagram user for the first time without needing to switch applications. That rewrite would also involve enabling end-to-end encryption (E2E) on all three apps, according to the NYT’s Mike Isaac. While all WhatsApp messages use that security feature, which prevents anyone, including Facebook itself, from intercepting the contents of messages, support across Facebook’s wider business is patchy. Facebook Messenger only supports E2E in a special “secure conversations” mode, which is off by default and must be enabled separately for every chat, while Instagram features no encryption at all. While E2E is a valuable security measure for users, it has the side effect of preventing Facebook from scanning messages as part of its advertising business. The technology has also come under attack from law enforcement organisations, since it hinders their ability to intercept suspect communications in real time.

Ciao don, una forte tensione verso il potere è strutturale ad ogni sistema gerarchico, sia esso giustificato da finalità di servizio o meno. Lo si vede bene nella Politica, quando si fa mestiere. E quando pur dichiarandosi "democratica", supporta una visione elitaria della Politica. E ahimè nemmeno la Chiesa ne risulta immune sebbene sappiamo che la gerarchia Cristiana dovrebbe essere improntata al sacrificio, ben oltre il servizio. Non ho proprio soluzioni da offrire, purtroppo, come cittadino o come cristiano. Ma ai chierichetti che seguo dico sempre di non litigare per chi apre la fila: se è vero che "servire" significa "essere utile", tutto ciò che non serve non può dare luogo a servizio. Come intercettare un Continente

Ciao! Come forse molti di voi sanno da qualche anno (3) tengo una video rubrica giornaliera online parlando di come "La rete ci cambia". Ho accumulato nel tempo qualche milione di minuti di ascolti (annulla, ovviamente) ed un piccolo pubblico molto affezionato. Da qualche mese tengo anche appuntamenti "a due" in cui ospito amici e personalità di spicco ed in cui per una mezz'oretta parliamo a microfono aperto di un tema caro ad entrambi. Si tratta di video molto "easy" e aperti, su temi spesso di interesse per una nicchia di persone. Questa settimana la chiacchierata ha incluso l'amico Andrea "Pila" Ghirardini, uno dei massimi esperti a livello europeo di "Lawful Interception" e l'argomento è "Come Intercettare un Continente". Caro don Peyron, lodevole iniziativa ma un'ottica antropocentrica ha diversi limiti. A mio parere il focus deve andare ai processi vitali. E un'etica adeguata risponde secondo me a principi e metodi di una saggezza pratica secolare. Derivano dalle tradizioni di saggezza dell'umanità ma non sono confessionali e si ispirano a modelli non gerarchici, di potere distribuito.
