Ai nexiani che si troveranno a Roma il prossimo 23 febbraio segnalo questo nuovo appuntamento della Scuola Critica del digitale. Giulio Roma, 23 febbraio, Cgil Lazio, sala Fredda, via Buonarroti 51, Roma 0re 16 - 19 Nell’ambito del progetto “Scuola Critica del digitale” CRS (Centro per la Riforma dello Stato) e FIOM di Roma e del Lazio organizzano il seminario: La Progettazione Partecipata delle Tecnologie Digitali con Vincenzo D'Andrea e Francesco Garibaldo Una introduzione alla partecipazione nell'epoca del capitalismo delle piattaforme: tra omologazione ed emancipazione Accanto e insieme ad una critica rigorosa e informata dei principali attuali utilizzi del digitale, che è stata sviluppata nei precedenti incontri della Scuola critica del digitale promossa dal CRS, è emerso l'interesse ad analizzare la possibilità di utilizzare le tecnologie digitali per applicazioni/piattaforme socialmente utili e possibilmente prive degli elementi negativi che caratterizzano le grandi piattaforme sociali oggi egemoni. Questa possibilità di realizzazioni “alternative” si basa generalmente su una diversa caratterizzazione degli utenti, delle finalità, delle regole d'uso, e delle tecnologie in gioco (come per esempio l'uso di software libero ed a codice aperto). Tuttavia questo non è sufficiente senza entrare nel merito delle modalità di progettazione e realizzazione, cercando di garantire la coerenza tra le caratteristiche degli strumenti realizzati e gli obiettivi del loro utilizzo. E' qui che entra in gioco la “progettazione partecipata”, un corpus di metodi, strumenti e pratiche che viene da lontano, che si è nel tempo aggiornata seguendo l'evoluzione della tecnologia digitale e dei suoi utilizzi, e che ha incontrato recentemente un rinnovato interesse non solo tra chi si occupa della progettazione di tecnologie di interesse sociale, ma anche, significativamente, tra chi, nel sindacato, cerca forme di contrasto e di contrattazione adeguate alle caratteristiche della produzione nel capitalismo digitale Continua qui: https://www.centroriformastato.it/la-progettazione-partecipata-delle-tecnol…

Cambiano i domini . gov.it

Nel 2009 era stato imposto a tutti i Comuni, come ad altri Enti territoriali, il dominio .gov.it. Si doveva fare domanda all'AgID (o come si chiamava allora) e poi impostare la rpocedura col provider. A titolo personale, non mi ero fidato troppo e per il mio Comune avevo lasciato il vecchio indirizzo, impostando il redirect sul .gov.it. Credo d'aver fatto bene, perchè ora smbra che detto sottodominio sarà riservato agli Enti centrali e vietato a quelli territoriali: <http://www.seneta.it/2018/02/riorganizzazione-del-dominio-di-secondo-livell…> http://www.seneta.it/2018/02/riorganizzazione-del-dominio-di-secondo-livell… Ma per chi aveva quello come unico riferimento WEB ora occorre cambiare dominio e indirizzo di posta. Ottimo esempio di cosa succede quando si legifera senza avere le idee chiare. Saluti a tutti D.

Facial Recognition Is Accurate, if You’re a White Guy

But the darker the skin, the more errors arise — up to nearly 35 percent for images of darker skinned women, according to a new study that breaks fresh ground by measuring how the technology works on people of different races and gender. These disparate results, calculated by Joy Buolamwini, a researcher at the M.I.T. Media Lab, show how some of the biases in the real world can seep into artificial intelligence, the computer systems that inform facial recognition. [...] In her newly published paper <http://proceedings.mlr.press/v81/buolamwini18a/buolamwini18a.pdf>, which will be presented at a conference <https://fatconference.org/> this month, Ms. Buolamwini studied the performance of three leading face recognition systems — by Microsoft, IBM and Megvii of China — by classifying how well they could guess the gender of people with different skin tones. These companies were selected because they offered gender classification features in their facial analysis software — and their code was publicly available for testing. She found them all wanting. To test the commercial systems, Ms. Buolamwini built a data set of 1,270 faces, using faces of lawmakers from countries with a high percentage of women in office. The sources included three African nations with predominantly dark-skinned populations, and three Nordic countries with mainly light-skinned residents. The African and Nordic faces were scored according to a six-point labeling system used by dermatologists to classify skin types. The medical classifications were determined to be more objective and precise than race. Then, each company’s software was tested on the curated data, crafted for gender balance and a range of skin tones. The results varied somewhat. Microsoft’s error rate for darker-skinned women was 21 percent, while IBM’s and Megvii’s rates were nearly 35 percent. They all had error rates below 1 percent for light-skinned males. Ms. Buolamwini shared the research results with each of the companies. IBM said in a statement to her that the company had steadily improved its facial analysis software and was “deeply committed” to “unbiased” and “transparent” services. This month, the company said, it will roll out an improved service with a nearly 10-fold increase in accuracy on darker-skinned women. Microsoft said that it had “already taken steps to improve the accuracy of our facial recognition technology” and that it was investing in research “to recognize, understand and remove bias.” Ms. Buolamwini’s co-author on her paper is Timnit Gebru, who described her role as an adviser.
