<https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2018/feb/25/artificial-intelligen…> [] , If one were a conspiracy theorist, one might ask if our obsession with a highly speculative future has been deliberately orchestrated to divert attention from the fact – pace Mr Gibson – that lower-level but exceedingly powerful AI is already here and playing an ever-expanding role in shaping our economies, societies and politics. This technology is a combination of machine learning and big data and it’s everywhere, controlled and deployed by a handful of powerful corporations, with occasional walk-on parts assigned to national security agencies. These corporations regard this version of “weak” AI as the biggest thing since sliced bread. The CEO of Google burbles about “AI everywhere” in his company’s offerings. Same goes for the other digital giants. In the face of this hype onslaught, it takes a certain amount of courage to stand up and ask awkward questions. If this stuff is so powerful, then surely we ought to be looking at how it is being used, asking whether it’s legal, ethical and good for society – and thinking about what will happen when it gets into the hands of people who are even worse than the folks who run the big tech corporations. Because it will. Fortunately there are scholars who have started to ask these awkward questions. There are, for example, the researchers who work at AI Now, a research institute at New York University focused on the social implications of AI. Their 2017 report makes interesting reading. Last week saw the publication of more in the same vein – a new critique of the technology by 26 experts from six major universities, plus a number of independent thinktanks and NGOs. Its title – The Malicious Use of Artificial Intelligence: Forecasting, Prevention and Mitigation – says it all. The report fills a serious gap in our thinking about this stuff. We’ve heard the hype, corporate and governmental, about the wonderful things AI can supposedly do and we’ve begun to pay attention to the unintentional downsides of legitimate applications of the technology. So goes a compelling and popular position that I have labelled big data exceptionalism. My article traces the debate between those who would forgo privacy in favor of use regulation and those who continue to assert the affirmative value of constraints on collection in the name of privacy. I challenge big data exceptionalism. First, it plays suspiciously well with the business model of dominant commercial incumbants, which rankles at any effort to contain their practices. More importantly, however, big data exceptionalism relies on misconceptions and ambiguities of key terms and is propped up by grossly flawed arguments and exaggerated claims of what is at stake for the public interest. According to your employer’s data, your facial expressions showed you were insubordinate and not trustworthy. You also move your hands at a rate that is considered substandard. Other companies you may want to work for could receive this data, making it difficult for you to find other work in this field. That may sound like a scenario straight out of a George Orwell novel, but it’s the future many American workers could soon be facing. In early February, media outlets reported that Amazon had received a patent for ultrasonic wristbands that could track the movement of warehouse workers’ hands during their shifts. If workers’ hands began moving in the wrong direction, the wristband would buzz, issuing an electronic corrective. If employed, this technology could easily be used to further surveil employees who already work under intense supervision. Whole Foods, which is now owned by Amazon, recently instituted a complex and punitive inventory system where employees are graded based on everything from how quickly and effectively they stock shelves to how they report theft. The system is so harsh it reportedly causes employees enough stress to bring them to tears on a regular basis. e poi mica solo di neuroni, si tratta... (cfr allegato) ho un altro paio di paper sul tema, se qualcuno fosse interessato (non spammo in lista) ...non è detto che un sistema che possiede una “capacità neuronale” fnanco superiore a quella umana sia in grado di esprimere una “intelligenza” analoga a quella umana. Dopotutto anche certi tipi di delfni hanno una corteccia cerebrale munita del doppio dei neuroni di un uomo e il sistema nervoso degli elefanti ha addirittura il triplo dei neuroni di quello di un essere umano.
