In our /PNAS/ article, Robertson and I calculated that Google now has the power to flip upwards of /25 per cent of the national elections in the world/ with no one knowing this is occurring. In fact, we estimate that, with or without deliberate planning on the part of company executives, Google’s search rankings have been impacting elections for years, with growing impact each year. And because search rankings are ephemeral, they leave no paper trail, which gives the company complete deniability. Specifically, we show that (i) bi- ased search rankings can shift the voting preferences of un- decided voters by 20% or more, (ii) the shift can be much higher in some demographic groups, and (iii) such rankings can be masked so that people show no awareness of the manip- ulation. Knowing the proportion of undecided voters in a population who have Internet access, along with the pro- portion of those voters who can be influenced using SEME, allows one to calculate the win margin below which SEME might be able to determine an election outcome. March 1, 2016 7:17 p.m. ET The Apple encryption conflict has turned nasty, as the Obama Administration, most Republicans and public opinion turn against the tech company. But, lo, Apple won its first court test on Monday, and its legal briefs against the court order to unlock an iPhone used by the San Bernardino jihadists show it has a better argument than the government. The FBI is attempting to extract information on Syed Rizwan Farook’s device but has been frustrated by Apple’s encryption. So a California magistrate ordered the company to design a custom version of its operating software that will disable certain security features and permit the FBI to break the password. Both Democrats and Republicans grilled FBI director Jim Comey about his agency’s unprecedented demand that Apple weaken the iPhone’s security protections to facilitate surveillance. This would have dire implications for smartphone users around the globe. Normally, congressional committee hearings featuring Comey are contests among the members over who can shower the FBI director with the most fawning compliments in their five-minute allotted time frame. Hard questions about the agency’s controversial tactics are avoided at all costs. Chi intendesse partecipare può scrivere direttamente a giuseppe.futia[at]polito[dot]it In occasione della sesta edizione dell’International Open Data Day <http://opendataday.org/> e del quarto International Open Data Day italiano <http://opendataday.it/>, il *Centro Nexa su Internet & Società* del Politecnico di Torino e *Synapta Srl*, start-up torinese che opera nel dominio Linked Data, co-organizzano un civic hackathon con l'obiettivo di fare *data hunting* di dati sui bandi pubblici. A chi ci rivolgiamo? Tutti! All'hackathon possono partecipare tutti e non si richiedono conoscenze specifiche. L'evento si rivolge a cittadini, civic hackers, studenti e ricercatori che vogliono cimentarsi nella *raccolta di dati, documenti e informazioni strutturate* pubblicati dagli *osservatori regionali* e dai *siti della pubblica amministrazione*. Come si svolgerà la giornata L'hackathon si svolgerà dalle ore 10 alle ore 18 CET di sabato 5 marzo 2016. Nella fase iniziale ci sarà una discussione fra i partecipanti e gli organizzatori per definire i dettagli per affrontare il data hunting (ciascun partecipante dovrà portare con sè il proprio portatile). Dalle ore 17 gli sforzi prodotti verranno concretizzati in un output che si tradurrà in un indice con i link ai dati e ai documenti che saranno stati individuati. This event exposes agents to strategies, techniques and tools that infosec professionals use to identify abuses of the Domain Name System (DNS), malicious registrations of domain names, addresses or hosting. Through a combination of lecture, demonstration, and hands-on exercises, attendees will learn how to collect information that will be needed to further investigate criminal activity. Who should attend This is a capability program that aimed at officers/agents who are familiar with Internet applications but relatively new to "protocols", and who will be investigating cybercrime. Some of the topics covered will be useful to more senior technical officers/agents but it is _not_ a host forensics or deep traffic analysis course.

il web come database giuridico: convegno al CNR

Domani a Firenze all'Istituto di Teoria e Tecniche dell’Informazione Giuridica del CNR, centro di eccellenza a livello nazionale per lo studio delle nuove frontiere in tema di gestione dell'informazione giuridica, si terrà il seminario "Il web come database giuridico. Problemi e opportunità di un’informazione giuridica aperta". Si tratta di un'occasione particolarmente interessante per me perché potrò finalmente portare in una sede tanto prestigiosa l'esperienza maturata in quasi un anno dall'inaugurazione del Progetto JurisWiki.it e potrò quindi confrontarmi sulle questioni più delicate poste dal progetto con i principali esperti italiani del settore. Oltre a me, parteciperanno infatti il prof. Francesco Pizzetti (docente presso l'Università di Torino nonché ex Garante Privacy), il dott. Enrico Consolandi (Magistrato referente distrettuale per l’informatica - area civile - Tribunale di Milano), l'amico e collega Carlo Blengino (avvocato e Fellow del NEXA Center for Internet & Society), la dott.ssa Tiziana Castiglione (di Wolters Kluwer Italia) e il dott.
