*What Happens To Uber Drivers And Other Sharing Economy Workers Injured On The Job?* Ellen Huet /Forbes Staff// / Omar, a 32-year-old Uber driver, was working a typical late-night shift in Los Angeles last month when his ride veered from pleasant to violent in just a few minutes. When he pulled his SUV full of passengers up to the Hollywood Tower apartments around 2:30 a.m., two of the riders refused to leave his car. An argument broke out, and Omar said one of the passengers hit him with a shiny object, broke his jaw in two places and landed him in the hospital for a week. Omar’s not the only worker to find that a newfangled job like driving for Uber comes with some very old dangers: on-the-job injuries. On Sunday, an off-duty Boston cop assaulted his Uber driver, yelled racial slurs at him and stole his car. In Los Angeles, people stabbed an Uber driver in the face and neck in November and choked another driver on New Year’s Day, though in both cases the attacker was likely not the passenger Uber assigned the driver. A San Francisco passenger attacked his Uber driver in November, landing him in the hospital with facial injuries. A Lyft passenger punched his driver and broke his nose in May. And it’s not just headline-grabbing assaults — if any Homejoy cleaner falls while mopping or any Instacart shopper throws out their back while carrying groceries, they’re in the same boat. in un intervento a bruxelles il mese scorso ho sostenuto alcuni punti che vanno in una direzione simile, che cerco di riassumere stiamo assistendo alla disintermediazione di moltitudini di operatori locali regolamentati (che creano tessuto socioeconomico) a favore di operatori monopolisti/oligopolisti globali deregolamentati [alcuni dei quali accumulano denaro in paradisi fiscali - da cui non li trasferiscono per evitare tassazione, come i pirati che ammassavano ricchezze a tortuga che non avrebbero mai goduto...] molti di questi soggetti, sfruttando loopholes regolamentari caratteristici della fase di traansizione, da abilitatori sono diventati - abilmente - intermediari (es. pubblicita' pagata per esposizione vs. intermediazione pagata in % sui ricavi) determinando perdita di valore aggiunto locale e di fiscalita (che vuol dire -anche- partecipazione al sistema di welfare). la regolamentazione tradizionale della dimensione materiale e' intrinsecamente interoperante e procompetitiva e generalmente anti-oligopolista (aiutata anche dagli effetti delle frizioni ed attriti della materialita) penso che nel medio periodo non conviene nemmeno a questi operatori globali mono/oligopolistici, neointermediari (spesso deregolamentati rispetto ai tradizionali fornitori materiali) che la situazioni si esacerbi perche' la risposta dei governi - i cui problemi sono locali e materiali - potra' essere solo la frammentazione geografica della rete come dall'articolo citato frammentazione che sta iniziando ad accadere basti pensare a cina, india, russia, ... e che potra' avvenire quando nel controllo dei sistemi di pagamento (che per molti aspetti e' la stessa cosa) - (curiosamente, dei BRIC, solo il brasile pare che si stia provando ancora a cambiare le regole del gioco mondiale stando seduto al tavolo) [non si pensi che i BTC siano un "workaround", indirizzeranno al massimo effetti di bordo...] per questo, IMHO, detti operatori, in una sorto di "contropartita" per mantenere la globalizzazione immateriale (aka "universalita' di internet") farebbero bene ad accettare di buon grado regole procompetitive ed asimmetriche, come mitigazione del loro "strapotere" - reale o percepito, ...ma e' lo stesso! -; regole tipo quelle che caratterizzano gli incumbent nelle tlc e che non sono punitive: non hanno portato al fallimento/spezzettamento di nessun operatore. la recente risoluzione approvata a vasta maggioranza al parlamento europeo, che chiede la separazione strutturale di google, ne e' a mio avviso la riprova. Interessante riflessione sullo scenario globale Who’s the true enemy of internet freedom - China, Russia, or the US? However, Russia, China and Brazil are simply responding to the extremely aggressive tactics adopted by none other than the US. In typical fashion, though, America is completely oblivious to its own actions, believing that there is such a thing as a neutral, cosmopolitan internet and that any efforts to move away from it would result in its “Balkanisation”.
