Napster: Culture of Free In 1999, a file-sharing program created in a Boston dorm room sent shock waves across the music industry and served notice that a major cultural shift was underway. By CLYDE HABERMAN Once upon a time, a new technology happened along. It was called radio. Soon enough, some people began plucking wireless transmissions out of the air for their own purposes. One clever young man in Washington figured out how to intercept messages that Navy units sent to one another. “He has represented himself to be at distant naval stations or at sea on warships equipped with wireless apparatus,” a magazine called Electrical World reported in 1907. Il regolamento equipara lItalia, secondo la Ong Statunitense, alla giunta militare Thailandese, alla Russia di Putin, alle proibizioni sulla rete del Premier turco Erdogan, ed infine alla libertà sul web garantita dal dittatore Kazako Nazarbayev, più noto in Italia per loscura vicenda della dissidente Shalabayeva. It’s reassuring, especially as you wait on a rainy street corner. Less reassuring, though, was the apparent threat from a senior vice president of Uber to spend “a million dollars” looking into the personal lives of journalists who wrote critically about Uber. The problem wasn’t just that a representative of a powerful corporation was contemplating opposition research on reporters; the problem was that Uber already had sensitive data on journalists who used it for rides. Buzzfeed reported that one of Uber’s executives had already looked up without permission rides taken by one of its own journalists. And according to The Washington Post, the company was so lax about such sensitive data that it even allowed a job applicant to view people’s rides, including those of a family member of a prominent politician. Nuovo intervento di Internet Society. jc *Update on the NETmundial Initiative* 07 December 2014 Ms. Kathryn Brown, President/CEO I thought I would give you a brief update on stakeholder conversations and developments since the Board issued its statement two and a half weeks ago on the NETmundial Initiative and a sense of what we have learned. ISOC has been in constant contact with the community, listening to concerns and working toward a constructive way forward. Our own multistakeholder community has been incredibly useful and insightful with respect to diverse sensitivities. Both before and after the Board's Statement, you have guided our work. In the last few weeks we have engaged in constructive discussions with CGI.br. We have had the opportunity to explain our position and discuss alternatives to address not only our concerns, but also broader concerns of other stakeholder groups. We and CGI.br have been open and frank in this dialogue; we are pleased to see that many of the issues discussed between our organizations are addressed in the CGI.br, "Further clarifications on the NETmundial Initiative for discussions in the MAG." [OT] Centro Hermes cerca uffici a Roma con altre no-profit Trasparenza

Ciao a tutti, il Centro Hermes sta cercando uno spazio per uffici a Roma dove, espandendo il suo team, lavorare sullo sviluppo del software GlobaLeaks oltre a svolgere le attività progettuali a supporto delle iniziative di trasparenza che lo usano (es: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GlobaLeaks#Implementations ). Il Centro Hermes opera anche nell'ambito delle tecnologie di trasparenza e della tutela della privacy online. La ricerca degli uffici è effettuata anche assieme a IRPI (Investigative Reporting Project Italy) http://irpi.eu a supporto delle collaborazioni fra tecnologia e giornalismo d'inchiesta, con un forte focus internazionale. Essendo tutte associazioni no-profit, con relativi budget risicati, stiamo cercando uffici che abbiano un "costo sociale", ovvero da 0 a qualche centinaia di euro di contributo spese Il luogo ideale sarebbe dove già operano organizzazioni con scopi affini ai temi dei diritti legati alla rete, della trasparenza, dell'etica e della legalità. L'ideale sarebbe venire ospitati da organizzazioni più grandi, dove servizi di facility management (pulizie, internet, accessi, elettricità) sono parte integrante della location. Come minimo indispensabile per solo Hermes/GlobaLeaks sarebbe utile: - 1 stanza con 3 desk - Disponibilità di sala riunione condivisa - Possibilità di accesso in orari non comuni (ie: serali) - Buon collegamento con mezzi pubblici - Servizi di facility management di base (elettricità, internet, accesso, pulizie) Come condizione ideale nell'individuare un ufficio comune con IRPI sarebbe utile: - 2 stanze con 7 desk in totale - 1 stanza dedicata con divano letto ad uso "foresteria spot" NB: Poichè diversi del team Hermes e IRPI sono sparsi per l'italia, così potrebbero passare per sessioni di lavoro spot di 2-3 giorni in modo molto più veloce, potendo lavorare fino a notte fonda, accampandosi sul divano letto! "There is a clear position on this with a big majority in the European Parliament," Kammerevert said. "There should only be special services for closed groups of users under very strict conditions when capacity is sufficient. "Merkel's comments are catastrophic, she's calling for a two-tier internet." 'No longer democratic' Net neutrality campaigners in Germany say that this is another example of Merkel's party, the conservative Christian Democratic Union (CDU), working with the telecommunication lobbyists. "This statement is taking the position of telecommunications firms. This is not the net neutrality we want, but a move towards the creation of a two-tier network where content becomes preferred based on who pays for it to make it so," said Markus Beckedahl, Berlin-based founder of netzpolitik. His colleague, Professor Leonhard Dobusch of the Free University (Freie Universität) in Berlin, agrees. "The revolutionary thing about the web is that the content can be decided on by anyone and, the principle of it, is that anyone can access it. But if you poke holes into net neutrality the way Chancellor Merkel suggests, then it's no longer democratic," he said.
