In occasion of the 26th Nexa Lunch Seminar, Hanne Melin, Director Global Public Policy and Head of eBay Inc. Public Policy Lab EMEA, will discuss the *change of the concept of "ownership" in an IoT world*. The policy and governance challenge should be re-framed, redefining the consumer *interests*, *rights*, and *power*, mapping at the same time the commercial interests and power in the IoT domain. In this context, in fact, the physical dimension is determined and controlled by the digital one, which, in turn, is controlled by the entity governing the data. For these reasons, we need to answer specific questions: which are the economic interests already at play, and which are expected to enter the game soon? Which are the implications of current business models and software and infrastructure design choices? What are the policy and technology tools for balanced rights and empowerment? Whatsapp Just Switched on End-to-End Encryption for Hundreds of Millions of Users Growing up in Soviet Ukraine in the 1980s, Whatsapp founder Jan Koum learned to distrust the government and detest its surveillance. After he emigrated to the U.S. and created his ultra-popular messaging system decades later, he vowed that Whatsapp would never make eavesdropping easy for anyone. Now, Whatsapp is following through on that anti-snooping promise at an unprecedented scale. On Tuesday, Whatsapp announced that it’s implementing end-to-end encryption, an upgrade to its privacy protections that makes it nearly impossible for anyone to read users’ messages—even the company itself. Whatsapp will integrate the open-source software Textsecure, created by privacy-focused non-profit Open Whisper Systems, which scrambles messages with a cryptographic key that only the user can access and never leaves his or her device. The result is practically uncrackable encryption for hundreds of millions of phones and tablets that have Whatsapp installed—by some measures the world’s largest-ever implementation of this standard of encryption in a messaging service. Esclusivo. Il documento riservato della Presidenza Italiana del Consiglio Europeo sulla Net Neutrality. Il Governo Italiano prevede la possibilità di bloccare i siti in via amministrativa. Obama si impone sulla Federal Trade Commission e prende una posizione chiara sulla net neutrality, mentre il Governo Italiano propone agli altri Stati dellUnione, in qualità di Presidente del Consiglio dellUnione Europea, la possibilità di bloccare il traffico in via amministrativa su ordine dellAutorità nazionale di regolazione ( in Italia AGCOM). E un documento esplosivo quello che si palesa agli occhi dei Delegati dei Governi dellUnione il 14 novembre scorso. La Presidenza Italiana del Consiglio Europeo fa circolare nel Gruppo di lavoro composto dai delegati degli altri Paesi dellUnione -che rimangono sbalorditi ed estremamente freddi sulla proposta des italiens- un documento riservato in cui lItalia propone gli emendamenti alle Norme Comunitarie in via di approvazione sulla Net Neutrality. Il testo si occupa del cosiddetto digital single market, altrimenti detto connected continent, e la precedente versione, ad opera però della Commissione e non del Consiglio Europeo, risaliva al 19 settembre scorso. Incredibilmente, nel documento, tra una messe di disposizioni normative che riguardano argomenti quali la politica europea dello spettro radio e il roaming, compare la possibilità di ordinare ai provider di bloccare i siti internet in via amministrativa, senza dunque passare per un Giudice. Ti devo almeno una cena per l' "illustre retista". Condivido totalmente. In IPv4 era stato previsto un meccanismo di differenziazione che però non era mai stato messo in pratica. E' negli anni 90 che nasce l'idea di trasportare il traffico multimediale con meccanismi di preferenza. Che però oggi sono effettivamente utilizzati in tante infrastrutture. Da un punto di vista meramente tecnologico, il difficile nasce quando dalla rete di un ISP, si vogliono applicare questi meccanismi a livello globale, ossia a cavallo di più operatori. Il problema che vedo oggi è che mentre questi meccanismi di IP sono evidenti, e quindi in un certo senso controllabili, ci sono altri meccanismi di violazione della neutralità che lo sono molto meno. I dati di CISCO dicono che il 30% di traffico su Internet oggi passa via Content Delivery Networks. In parole povere gli OTT hanno messo dei server proprio sotto casa nostra e in un certo senso della neutralità della rete se ne fregano. Pensa, pure nel cuore di GARR, ossia nella rete di ricerca italiana che in quanto tale dovrebbe essere assolutamente "neutrale", c'è una cache Google ed una Akamai. E le proiezioni di CISCO dicono che nel 2018 questo traffico via CDN sarà più del 50% del totale. Senza parlare poi di Google che la sua rete di nodi CDN la interconnette con una infrastruttura proprietaria, peraltro incredibilmente evoluta dal punto di vista tecnologico. Rete che ovviamente è connessa anche a GARR, sempre per dire. Da alcuni dati che stiamo raccogliendo via PlanetLab, direi che oggi per lo streaming video abbiamo una Internet non a due ma a tre velocità. E la mia preoccupazione è che se lasciamo tutto così com'è facciamo solo rafforzare queste posizioni dominanti.
