Sono poche ore in cui sono back from OHM2013 (http://ohm2013.org) forse il più vasto evento Hacker mondiale con oltre 3000 hacker da tutto il mondo (e una ampia rappresentanza della Italian Hackers' Embassy). Dopo una 5 giorni di fuoco con il Centro Hermes e una quantità sbalorditiva di attivisti digitali che hanno partecipato al Noisy Square (http://noisysquare.com) evento attivista nell'evento hacker, volevo condividere con voi il talk forse più coinvolgente, la chiamata alle armi di Eleanor Saitta, direttore tecnico dell'International Modern Media Institute Islandese, Principal Security Engineer presso l'Open Internet Tools project. <https://noisysquare.com/ethics-and-power-in-the-long-war-eleanor-saitta-dym…> If you think that people are fundamentally good, then your life is in some case much simpler. Because you don’t have to worry about people being tainted by the reality of things. Molto interessante, ma le stesse argomentazioni possono valere per dire che la condanna di Berlusconi e l'assoluzione della banda del MPS è discrezionale e dunque di natura politica. Se il corpo delle leggi è troppo vasto e contraddittorio, significa che la tecnologia richiede un intervento di semplificazione legislativa, per garantire la certezza del diritto. Inoltre, ben venga una automazione delle policy di surveillance e law enforcement, proprio per garantire la applicazione uniforme per ciascun cittadino, art 3 costituzione. Non ha invece senso affermare che non potendo compiere un reato non si possa cambiare una legge ingiusta. Semmai sarebbe vero il contrario. Una legge ingiusta provocherebbe una sollevazione popolare. Recently exposed information about government Internet surveillance programs is a wake-up call for Internet users everywhere – the fundamental ideals of the Internet are under threat. The Internet Society Board of Trustees believes that government Internet surveillance programs create unacceptable risks for the future of a global, interoperable, and open Internet. As the next billion people come online, these countries should be expected to demonstrate leadership in support of the values that underpin the global Internet. In the wake of these announcements, the Internet Society encourages a return to multistakeholder cooperation to preserve the benefits of the Internet ecosystem for all. The Internet Society Board of Trustees expects governments to fully engage with their citizens in an open dialogue on how to reconcile national security and the fundamental rights of individuals. Security should not be at the cost of individual rights and, in this context, the Board welcomes the initiative by some civil society organizations to promote "International Principles on the Application of Human Rights to Communications Surveillance." The Internet Society endorses these principles, and emphasizes the importance of proportionality, due process, legality, and transparent judicial oversight. "For at least the past year, I've suffered from ridiculously awful YouTube speeds," Hutchinson tells me. "Ads load quickly—there's never anything wrong with the ads!—but during peak times, HD videos have been almost universally unwatchable. I've found myself having to reduce the quality down to 480p and sometimes even down to 240p to watch things without buffering. More recently, videos would start to play and buffer without issue, then simply stop buffering at some point between a third and two-thirds in. When the playhead hit the end of the buffer—which might be at 1:30 of a six-minute video—the video would hang for several seconds, then simply /end/. The video's total time would change from six minutes to 1:30 minutes and I'd be presented with the standard 'related videos' view that you see when a video is over." Hutchinson, a Houston resident who pays Comcast for 16Mbps business-class cable, is far from alone. But cynical types who suspect their Internet Service Providers (ISPs) intentionally degrade streaming video may be right as well. No, your ISP (probably) isn't sniffing your traffic every time you click a YouTube or Netflix link, ready to throttle your bandwidth. But behind the scenes, in negotiations that almost never become public, the world's biggest Internet providers and video services argue over how much one network should pay to connect to another. When these negotiations fail, users suffer. It certainly ought to be. After the attacks of September 11th 2001, George Bush tipped the balance too far from liberty towards security, and it has stayed there under Barack Obama. As Mr Manning awaits his sentence, Edward Snowden, a contractor for the American intelligence services, was reported on August 1st to have gone to Russia, where he has been offered a year's temporary asylum. He had set out to shed light on the warrantless warehousing by the National Security Agency (NSA) of private data belonging to millions of American citizens, possibly in breach of the Patriot Act and the Fourth Amendment. His revelations continued this week. Meanwhile the Obama administration has seized journalists’ telephone records and pursued leakers with a legal sledgehammer.
