Pur essendo un affezionato Apple (ho un macbook, due iPod e un iPhone col quale sto scrivendo questo messaggio) l'ipad non mi prende. Tuttavvia sin dal suo annuncio molti ce lo hanno già richiesto. Assolutamente. La gestualità di un oggetto come l'iPad è molto meno ingombrante e apparente di quella di un notebook. Non solo nell'ambiente casalingo, ma anche in quello aziendale. Ci sono tantissimi luoghi di lavoro dove entrare in una riunione con un notebook e usarlo durante la riunione è normale, ma sono molto di più quelli, anche in america, dove questo non è diventato comune. Prendere appunti, verificare al volo alcune affermazioni, assemblare informazioni, sarà efficiente, e snella con l'iPad. Economist: "Copyright and wrong"

*Protecting creativity* *Copyright and wrong* Apr 8th 2010 From The Economist print edition *Why the rules on copyright need to return to their roots* WHEN Parliament decided, in 1709, to create a law that would protect books from piracy, the London-based publishers and booksellers who had been pushing for such protection were overjoyed. When Queen Anne gave her assent on April 10th the following year---300 years ago this week---to "An act for the encouragement of learning" they were less enthused. Parliament had given them rights, but it had set a time limit on them: 21 years for books already in print and 14 years for new ones, with an additional 14 years if the author was still alive when the first term ran out. After that, the material would enter the public domain so that anyone could reproduce it. The lawmakers intended thus to balance the incentive to create with the interest that society has in free access to knowledge and art. The Statute of Anne thus helped nurture and channel the spate of inventiveness that Enlightenment society and its successors have since enjoyed. Over the past 50 years, however, that balance has shifted. Largely thanks to the entertainment industry's lawyers and lobbyists, copyright's scope and duration have vastly increased. In America, copyright holders get 95 years' protection as a result of an extension granted in 1998, derided by critics as the "Mickey Mouse Protection Act". They are now calling for even greater protection, and there have been efforts to introduce similar terms in Europe. Such arguments should be resisted: it is time to tip the balance back. Both are the best at what they do in certain domains. Each is emphatically elitist, and, in varying ways, self-confident to the point of arrogance. Neither is very transparent (though at least the Times has its Public Editor <http://topics.nytimes.com/top/opinion/thepubliceditor/index.html>). The differences, of course, are profound. In particular, there's the business trajectory: Apple has reinvented itself several times, and lately has gone from triumph to triumph as a profit-making company. The Times Co.'s record in this regard is deeply mixed: Reinvention has come mostly at the edges, and the business has been heading downhill. The affinities between Apple and the Times came into sharper focus in the past several weeks, but in ways that have raised some difficult and as-yet unanswered questions. Most of the really exciting stuff hasn't come from big corporations with enormous budgets, it's come from experimentalist amateurs. These people were able to make stuff and put it in the public's eye and even sell it without having to submit to the whims of a single company that had declared itself gatekeeper for your phone and other personal technology. Danny O'Brien does a very good job of explaining <http://www.oblomovka.com/wp/2010/04/01/cd-roms-and-ipads/> why I'm completely uninterested in buying an iPad -- it really feels like the second coming of the CD-ROM "revolution" in which "content" people proclaimed that they were going to remake media by producing expensive (to make and to buy) products. I was a CD-ROM programmer at the start of my tech career, and I felt that excitement, too, and lived through it to see how wrong I was, how open platforms and experimental amateurs would eventually beat out the spendy, slick pros.
