Hersh <http://www.newyorker.com/magazine/bios/seymour_m_hersh/search?contributorNa…> November 1, 2010 On April 1, 2001, an American EP-3E Aries II reconnaissance plane on an eavesdropping mission collided with a Chinese interceptor jet over the South China Sea, triggering the first international crisis of George W. Bush's Administration. The Chinese jet crashed, and its pilot was killed, but the pilot of the American aircraft, Navy Lieutenant Shane Osborn, managed to make an emergency landing at a Chinese F-8 fighter base on Hainan Island, fifteen miles from the mainland. Osborn later published a memoir, in which he described the "incessant jackhammer vibration" as the plane fell eight thousand feet in thirty seconds, before he regained control. The plane carried twenty-four officers and enlisted men and women attached to the Naval Security Group Command, a field component of the National Security Agency. They were repatriated after eleven days; the plane stayed behind. The Pentagon told the press that the crew had followed its protocol, which called for the use of a fire axe, and even hot coffee, to disable the plane's equipment and software. These included an operating system created and controlled by the N.S.A., and the drivers needed to monitor encrypted Chinese radar, voice, and electronic communications. It was more than two years before the Navy acknowledged that things had not gone so well. "Compromise by the People's Republic of China of undestroyed classified material . . . is highly probable and cannot be ruled out," a Navy report issued in September, 2003, said. Giorno del Pubblico Dominio 2011

Se tutto va' come speriamo, sabato 22 gennaio 2011 al mattino celebreremo a Torino il *giorno del pubblico dominio 2011* ("giorno" intenso in senso lato: sarebbe il 1 gennaio, infatti, che pero' e' una giornata piuttosto poco adatta per organizzare incontri pubblici). Ci sara' un'introduzione sul pubblico dominio e perche' e' importante a livello culturale, sociale ed economico, e poi passeremo a discutere l'italiano piu' prominente morto nel 1940 (ovvero, 70 anni fa), Vito Volterra. Volterra fu matematico di fama mondiale, senatore del Regno, nonche' grande organizzatore della ricerca: tra le altre cose e' stato il fondatore de facto del Politecnico di Torino nonche' il primo presidente del CNR. Fu inoltre uno dei 12 professori universitari (su circa mille) che nel 1931 rifiutarono di prestare il giuramento di fedelta' al fascimo: fu per questo licenziato in tronco. Passo' la maggior parte dei pochi anno che gli restavano da vivere all'estero, tornando a Roma poco prima di morire. Poi passeremo a parlare di un altro grande scrittore che entrera' nel pubblico dominio a inizio 2011 (salvo gabole legali), ovvero, Francis Scott Fitzgerald. UNESCO (ma finanziato dalla Commissione :) - Professional Journalistic Standards and Code of Ethics

http://www.unesco.org/new/en/communication-and-information/themes/professio… This UNESCO project intends to encourage, assist and accelerate media reforms in the EU candidate countries (Croatia, the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, and Turkey) and EU potential candidate countries (Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Serbia and Kosovo (under UNSCR 1244), consolidate European standards on media accountability and self-regulation. Project focuses on two main area of interest: 1. developing the self-regulation tools and mechanisms and increasing the awareness and the valorisation of self-regulation among media professionals and organizations and, on the other hand, 2. speed up the approximation of the EU and international standards and best-practices in the field of media accountability in the targeted countries, especially in the field of audiovisual services and media legislative frameworks. This project builds on, and consolidates, the expertise in the countries and in the region, as well as puts in a regional context the pre-existent initiatives at the national level. In some countries self-regulation bodies have been established but they are largely described by media associations and organizations as either ineffective or non credible. In some other countries, workshops and studies highlighted the need for self-regulation mechanisms to be developed, but little has been done and still a wide consensus around the most effective implementation is lacking. In addition to this reference tool, UNESCO will develop supporting documentation, assist newsrooms in the targeting countries to experiment self-regulatory mechanisms, and will produce a “how-to” guide for the newsrooms interested to build their own accountability systems. The program will also facilitate the organization of two international thematic brainstorming meetings and local events in each project countries to bring together the relevant stakeholders. The project is funded by the European Commission.
