Fwd: The role of FOSS in preventing a recurrence of vehicle emissions scandals

by Andrea Trentini

(mi allaccio al thread https://server-nexa.polito.it/pipermail/nexa/2022-December/049933.html e seguenti) -------- Forwarded Message -------- Subject: The role of FOSS in preventing a recurrence of vehicle emissions scandals Date: Sat, 06 May 2023 16:58:09 +0300 From: Lars Noodén <lars.nooden(a)gmx.com> To: libreplanet-discuss(a)libreplanet.org Recent news¹ reminds us that back in 2015 a whistleblower exposed the VW/Audi emissions scandal, which I guess had been going on since 1999. The companies executives used closed source, proprietary software in the vehicles to hide the fact that the vehicles were emitting 40 times the allowed NOx when actually out on the roads and not in the testing centers. Even with fines and prison sentences, there is no way to be sure the companies are not working on more of the same -- unless the development is done out in the open. Clearly we see both physical and economic harm from neglecting to require FOSS even in embedded computers, such as the 100+ now found in each new car. because these companies have already shown that the closed source model *cannot* be trusted such style of development should not be allowed any more in regards to vehicles. Surely a FOSS-based workflow can be figured out. Perhaps it is a timely and appropriate topic for institutions like FSF, OSI, EFFI, and so on to address that publicly? Even a short statement in passing would at least raise awareness and provide an opportunity to ratchet things forward in regard to Software Freedom. /Lars ¹ Many sites on this topic, too, here is a small sample of three: "Former Audi Chief to Plead Guilty in Emissions Scandal" https://www.nytimes.com/2023/05/03/business/diesel-emissions-scandal-audi-r… "Ex-Audi CEO to Plead Guilty Over 'Dieselgate' Scandal " https://www.voanews.com/a/ex-audi-ceo-to-plead-guilty-over-dieselgate-scand… "Former head of Audi to confess in 'dieselgate' fraud trial| https://www.dw.com/en/former-head-of-audi-to-confess-in-dieselgate-fraud-tr… _______________________________________________ libreplanet-discuss mailing list libreplanet-discuss(a)libreplanet.org https://lists.libreplanet.org/mailman/listinfo/libreplanet-discuss

[smart cities] Israel's Biometric Apartheid

by 380°

This check is obligatory for Palestinians, as is the check at American airports for foreigners.» --8<---------------cut here---------------start------------->8--- The fact that the occupation corrupts and distorts the most basic moral values is self-evident. But we are not always exposed to the depth of the distortion due to the way its poison is disguised. The report released Tuesday by Amnesty International regarding how Israel surveils Palestinians is important because it lays bare another aspect of the poison. [...] According to the report, “Red Wolf uses this data to determine whether an individual can pass a checkpoint … If no entry exists for an individual, they will be denied passage. Red Wolf could also deny entry based on other information stored on Palestinian profiles, for example if an individual is wanted for questioning or arrest.” [...] The fact that these operations are carried out by an automated system and not by soldiers does not reduce the injustice but increases it, because the discriminatory treatment of Palestinians is hard-wired into a machine. [...] Red Wolf, Blue Wolf and Wolf Pack are the names given to the technologies, but in fact they are another name for the occupation. Along with the need to bring an immediate end to these malicious practices, we must recognize that as long as there is an occupation, Israel will continue to engage in a destructive surveillance and espionage regime. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY By Checkpoint 56 in H2, a towering barrier features two turnstiles, and at least 24 cameras on the outside. Palestinians rely on passage through the checkpoint to access most, if not all, of goods and services, work, education, family life, and healthcare. It is here where witnesses described coming face to face with a new facial recognition system, Red Wolf, in 2022. Palestinians are the only racial group of residents in H2 required to use these checkpoints, and the system relies on databases consisting exclusively of Palestinian individuals’ data. [...] Since 2020, soldiers in Hebron have been instructed by their commanders to use the Blue Wolf app via smartphones to register as many Palestinians as possible and to “demonstrat[e] [our] presence”, according to Breaking the Silence. The gamifed biometric surveillance system ranks military units by numbers of pictures captured and incentivizes them to keep Palestinians under constant observations. [...] the ways in which these measures have been further intensifed and expanded by technological means was, until now, less well-understood. [...] Checkpoint offcials not only control all entry and exit points in the Occupied Palestinian Territories (OPT), but also administer a system of arbitrary checks and restrictions on access to rights and services, affecting Palestinians exclusively. Among other things, these arbitrary restrictions on the freedom of movement reduce the ability of Palestinians to access healthcare, employment and education, as well as their ability to exercise their right to freedom of peaceful assembly. [...] Notably, the technology records individuals’ information on the surveillance system even if they have not knowingly or consensually registered with it. :-O --8<---------------cut here---------------start------------->8--- [...] These databases and tools exclusively record the data of Palestinians and are used to determine the ability of individual Palestinians to enter or exit their neighbourhoods and other locations. In Hebron, the majority Palestinian population of some 33,000 people is restricted to certain areas due to the presence of some 850 Israeli settlers – whose occupancy violates international law – and the Israeli military orders, checkpoints and surveillance that support settlers’ continued presence. [...] “We don’t know how soldiers are using this information, and we don’t know what they have access to or what they will use against me. There is no infuence we can have on the system.” [...] The system enables Israeli authorities to identify protesters and keep Palestinians under constant observation, even as they go about their ordinary daily activities. Such systems have expanded alongside illegal Israeli settlements [...] This report establishes that facial recognition technologies are providing the Israeli authorities with powerful new tools for curbing freedom of movement – a pre-requisite for the realization of basic rights – adding further layers of technological sophistication to the system of apartheid that Israel is imposing on Palestinians in the OPT. This is achieved via: • The establishment of compounding technological infrastructure to expand the reach of Israeli authorities’ control. As checkpoints govern the ability of Palestinians in H2––the area of Hebron under military rule by the Israeli Civil Administration––to travel outside their homes, Israel is able to contain Palestinians geographically, using domination by way of military force and surveillance tools such as Red Wolf and Blue Wolf to deter resistance. • Surveillance as part of a coercive environment aimed at forcing Palestinians to leave areas of strategic interest to Israeli authorities, by making their ordinary lives unbearable. As described in soldiers’ testimony used in this report, arbitrary searches, registrations and lookups facilitated by the use of Blue Wolf have interfered with the daily activities of Palestinians in, for example, the H2 and Silwan areas. As communities resist the expansion of settlements and the demolition of Palestinian homes, their participation in protests in turn exposes them to further surveillance. [...] Given the sensitive nature of the research, risk of leaks, and risks posed to Amnesty researchers, a decision was made from the beginning of the research not to engage directly with Israeli offcials. [...] Amnesty International is not convinced that the security justifcations which Israel cites as the basis for its treatment of Palestinians – including restricting their freedom of movement – justify the severe restrictions that the Israeli authorities have imposed. [...] Other policies have absolutely no reasonable basis in security and are clearly shaped by the intent to oppress and dominate. This includes differential treatment in the occupied territories, supporting the settlement of Jewish Israelis in the OPT, the designation of closed military zones, and the imposition of certain restrictions on movement such as travel bans. [...] --8<---------------cut here---------------end--------------->8--- Saluti, 380° [1] https://server-nexa.polito.it/pipermail/nexa/2021-November/022546.html (Msg-id:87ee7pflmf.fsf@xelera.eu) -- 380° (Giovanni Biscuolo public alter ego) «Noi, incompetenti come siamo, non abbiamo alcun titolo per suggerire alcunché» Disinformation flourishes because many people care deeply about injustice but very few check the facts. Dati della PA nei cloud [era Re: Is AI just 'Capital's Willing Executioner'?]

by Antonio

Quindi criptare i dati in partenza ... A. Re: [nexa] The Seven Deadly Sins of AI Predictions

by Roberto Dolci

Re: [nexa] Is AI just 'Capital's Willing Executioner'?

by Giacomo Tesio

[OT?] Re: Leaked Internal Google Document Claims Open Source AI Will Outcompete Google and OpenAI

OT? Che si potrebbe OVVIAMENTE riscrivere così: By owning the "platform" [1] where /communication/ (DO NOT) happen, the military-industrial complex cements itself as a thought leader and direction-setter, earning the ability to shape the /narrative/ on /everything/ (aka "everything is NARRATIVE"). -- 380° (Giovanni Biscuolo public alter ego) «Noi, incompetenti come siamo, non abbiamo alcun titolo per suggerire alcunché» Disinformation flourishes because many people care deeply about injustice but very few check the facts.
