Sometimes the information they seek is in written or audio form, and sometimes the information they seek is visual - which may take the form of photographs, designs, artworks or other types of imagery - and we try to present the information in a way that best answers the users query. With this in mind, we launched our Image Search service in 2003, which presents users with a selection of reduced-resolution thumbnail images relating to their search query. Users can then click through to the site that hosts the image to see it in full-size or to see the content around it. Millions of users find this service helpful - they can quickly find exactly what they want, and many site owners do too - its another means through which Internet users can discover their sites. Website owners have complete control over what Google will crawl on their site: with a simple set of tools called robots.txt they can notably tell Google (and other search engines) not to crawl the images on their site. We are heartened by the German Supreme Court´s ruling today that Google Image Search does not infringe copyright. The case was brought to court by an artist who had uploaded photos of her work (large paintings) to her own website. She then claimed for copyright infringement against Google as the images were displayed in our image search results. Today´s ruling makes it clear not just for Google, its users in Germany and all owners of websites containing images, but also for all providers of image search services operating in the country: showing thumbnail images within search results is legitimate and millions of users in Germany benefit from being able to discover visual information at the click of a mouse. We still have to wait for the full reasoning behind the decision. What we know today: thousands of websites and companies in Germany will be able to benefit from Google Image Search in the future as well. News websites on the Internet, online providers of pictures and posters, artists, photographers, designers and many more who depend on the web for their livelihoods can go on using the service as a significant distribution platform. Bauwens che ci informa di un colossale progetto di schedatura di tutti i cittadini da parte del governo indiano e richiede delle linee guida che possano salvaguardare la privacy dei cittadini e abbassare i rischi che tali dati vengano usati impropriamente (il progetto prevede impronte digitali di tutte le dita, scanning dell'iride e della faccia). Se per caso ci fosse qualche esperto che volesse contribuire in qualsiasi forma, anche dei link a del materiale significativo... They account for 1/6th of U.S. GDP, one out of eight jobs, and $281 billion in exports. The Internet and information technologies are key drivers of the economy, but few realize that copyright law’s delicate balance is essential to this growth. Copyright law not only provides artists with certain protections, but also includes important limitations that promote innovation and legitimate re-use of information. For example, without limits on copyright, search engines would not exist. Indexing the Web would be illegal, because that requires creating a copy of websites first. The importance of well-designed copyright goes much further, though. iPods, Tivos, and any other digital media device that is capable of making copies depends on balanced copyright. The Internet’s very function is to make and disseminate copies of information -- it couldn’t exist without limitations in copyright. Congress laid the foundations for the Web in 1998, when it enacted the Digital Millennium Copyright Act and created a set of “safe harbors” that protected online service providers who respond properly to copyright holders’ notifications of alleged infringement. Virtually all Web platforms -- from the smallest website hosting platforms and community bulletin boards to YouTube, Facebook, eBay, Craigslist, and everything in between -- depend on this legal framework. CCIA’s study attempts to quantify the economic impact of these and other industries by using a methodology put out by the World Intellectual Property Organization <http://www.wipo.int/portal/index.html.en>. Re: [nexa] R: R: provazione di Morozov

Mah.... Morozov fa l'errore esattamente opposto a quello degli entusiasti e degli ottimisti che decantano le virtù salvifiche e democratiche di Internet. Fermo il fatto che la "risposta" di Luca è molto azzeccata e praticamente perfetta per il livello di astrazione che offre, la riflessione che mi viene da fare è che in tanti, prima di Morozov, abbiamo ragionato, detto e scritto dei "pericoli" legati a un'interpretazione acritica degli usi sociali di Internet, ricordando che il senso di una tecnica è sempre dato dai suoi utilizzatori e che Internet forse non fa rima con libertà ma "è progettata" per poterlo fare. Da questo punto di vista segnalo che tra le analisi delle culture critiche di Internet i testi di Geert Loovink e Bifo sono ancora insuperati, ma il libro che vi consiglio di leggere è Cybersoviet di Carlo Formenti.In esso Formenti decostruisce i miti di Internet (non è vro che sia democratica, perchè non è vero che la rete non possa essere controllata, la sua trasparenza non è sempre buona e gli sciami che la popolano non sono sempre intelligenti). Dopo aver ingaggiato un pesante corpo a corpo con le teorie democratiche e postdemocratiche legate a Internet e lascia a noi le conclusioni sul che fare per trasformare Internet in uno strumento di libertà.
