*"Public data and metadata, Google style" * Posted on February 20th, 2011 I'm finding Google Lab's Dataset Publishing Language <http://code.google.com/apis/publicdata/> (DSPL) pretty fascinating. Upload a set of data, and it will do some semi-spiffy <http://www.google.com/publicdata/explore?ds=l6t8doc0rch3u_&ctype=l&strail=f…> visualizations of it. (As Apryl DeLancey <http://apryl.posterous.com/google-opens-up-public-data-explorer-to-your> points out, Martin Wattenberg and Fernanda Viegas now work for Google, so if they're working on this project, the visualizations are going to get much better <http://hint.fm/>.) More important, the data you upload is now publicly available. And, more important than that, the site wants you to upload your data in Google's DSPL format. DSPL aims at getting more metadata into datasets, making them more understandable, integrate-able, and re-usable. So, let's say you have spreadsheets of "statistical time series for unemployment and population by country, and population by gender for US states." Apple: you must be at least 17 years old to use Opera

This week, the Opera web browser became the first non-native browser made available in Apple's Mac App Store. *29° Mercoledì di NEXA* *"I dati aperti incontrano il Web" * *Mercoledì 9 marzo 2011 ore 18 -- 20* (2° mercoledì del mese) Via Boggio 65/a, Torino (primo piano) Ingresso libero Live streaming: http://nexa.polito.it/events La richiesta di *dati aperti* attraverso il Web sta assumendo un ruolo sempre più rilevante. In questo scenario occorrono dunque strumenti che ne consentano una diffusione capillare ed oggettiva. L'informazione /raw/ che tali dati veicolano, infatti, è in grado di aggiungere valore a contesti specifici tramite l'aggregazione con altre informazioni, arricchendo di fatto la conoscenza complessiva all'interno del sistema. Nel caso delle amministrazioni pubbliche, inoltre, la possibilità di accedere a dati aperti favorisce la *trasparenza *in quanto permette ai cittadini di controllarne l'operato. Il Web è per sua natura un sistema che collega documenti e risorse all'interno della sua "nuvola" e consente di diffondere contenuti verso una grande rete di utilizzatori. Per questi motivi, la disponibilità di *piattaforme collaborative* per la catalogazione dei dati rende possibile orientare la ricerca di coloro i quali necessitano di queste informazioni per scopi di ricerca, di business o per interesse civico. Il tema dell'incontro riguarderà dunque lo stato dell'arte degli strumenti Web in grado di facilitare l'aggregazione di dati provenienti da fonti differenti, con un'attenzione particolare alle strategie intraprese a livello italiano e internazionale riguardanti la catalogazione e il riuso degli /open data/. Ne discuteranno Stefano Costa, coordinatore di Open Knowledge Foundation Italia e principale animatore di IT.CKAN.NET <http://IT.CKAN.NET/>, un progetto congiunto di Open Knowledge Foundation e del Centro NEXA, e Giuseppe Rizzo, dottorando di ricerca in Ingegneria Informatica e dei Sistemi presso il Politecnico di Torino, assieme ai ricercatori ed i fellows del Centro NEXA e tutti coloro i quali vorranno intervenire nel dibattito. *Biografie*: *Stefano Costa*, dottorando di ricerca in Archeologia presso l'Università di Siena, coordinatore di Open Knowledge Foundation in Italia, già consigliere di GFOSS.it. I commend the Faculty of Law of the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) and the principal organizers of the Conference, Professor Brian Fitzgerald and Ben Atkinson, for taking up the gauntlet thrown down by the digital society. Few issues in intellectual property or, if I may suggest, cultural policy are as important as the consequences of the revolutionary structural change introduced by digital technology and the Internet. Recently, as the number of people in the world with access to the Internet passes two billion1 <http://www.wipo.int/about-wipo/en/dgo/speeches/dg_blueskyconf_11.html#1>, support for addressing the consequences of this fundamental change has come from the highest levels. Both President Sarkozy of France and President Medvedev of the Russian Federation have called for the G20 to consider the issue. In his speech at Davos earlier this year, President Medvedev stated that "the old principles of intellectual property regulation are not working anymore, particularly when it comes to the Internet". That, he stated, "is fraught with the collapse of the entire intellectual property rights system". Digital technology and the Internet have created the most powerful instrument for the democratization of knowledge since the invention of moveable type for printing. They have introduced perfect fidelity and near zero-marginal costs in the reproduction of cultural works and an unprecedented capacity to distribute those works around the globe at instantaneous speeds and, again, near zero-marginal costs. The Future of Copyright and the future of intellectual rights

Francis Gurry, Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) pronounced last Friday a keynote speech on The Future of Copyright. After the speech of European Commissioner Nellie Kroes at the Forum d’Avignon, and in line with Lawrence Lessig’s recent speech at WIPO, this conference is an historical turning point. At the highest level, those in charge of copyright policy are conscious that it will need a deep reform and reorientation, or risks disappearing totally. It is an evolution one must welcome, assist, and defend against the present circumvention of multilateral organizations such as WIPO by bilateral negociations (Free Trade Agreements) or plurilateral negotiations between friends of property fundamentalism (ACTA). However, one must also recognize that it can constitute only one component of a modern intellectual rights policy. Unless its mandate is reformulated, WIPO can only care for the rights defined in the treaties it is in charge of, or those that are being negotiated in its arena. The key requirement of an intellectual rights framework adapted to the digital era is for non-market1 activities of individuals to be free of any proprietary restriction. This does not make them a lawless domain, but it means that an intellectual production placed in the hands of any person, can be used outside markets by that person, without property claims being possibly opposed to that usage. Is this heretical? Not more than permitting everyone to speak or write without anyone being able to claim property on language and writing. However, it is not a doctrine that WIPO can today profess. Though many people, even in 2010, doubted the power of the Net to transform human society, far, far fewer do so in 2011. What can we learn from the astonishing developments in the Middle East -- about the Internet, and Internet law and policy? We will (and should) be discussing that question for a long time. I want to look at it from above and from below; how could this network, which is nothimg more than a device for getting 1s and 0s from point A to point B, have played such a prominent role in the revolutions now sweeping through the Arab lands? Cairo downtown: parlano i blogger egiziani

Ciao cari, care-- sabato scorso ho visto un doumentario interessante sui blogger egiziani. E ho parlato con unno di loro e alcuni giornalisti. E' stata l'occasione di capire meglio cosa si muoveva nella loro società prima delle rivolte. So che è stato mandato da Rainews24 ma non l'ho trovato, magari con un clinet torrent voi ci riuscite. Qui ce n'è un assaggio: http://www.vimeo.com/19714539 Girato nel 2009, il documentario Cairo Downtown mostra lo spaccato della società egiziana divenuto protagonista dei moti rivoluzionari che hanno costretto Mubarak a lasciare il potere. Ragazzi che usano la rete per fare politica e esprimere il dissenso. I blogger egiziani sono considerati maestri delll'attivismo in rete in tutto il medioriente: quanto questo tipo di attivismo sia stato efficace lo abbiamo visto nelle scorse settimane. Giovani, coraggiosi, cresciuti sotto un regime in sella dal oltre 30 anni, hanno lottato prima di tutto contro le leggi di emergenza, utili a consolidare il potere del rais e a rafforzare uno stato di polizia che poteva abusare di chiunque. Ad un grande impegno nella difesa dei diritti umani, si è aggiunta la lotta contro la corruzione diffusa, che ha portato il Paese alla fame, ma soprattutto la voglia di democrazia. Minacce, prigione, torture e talvolta la morte non sono bastati a fermarli.
