In January 2012, the European Commission has proposed a comprehensive reform of the EU's 1995 data protection rules <http://ec.europa.eu/justice/data-protection/document/review2012/com_2012_11…> *to strengthen online privacy rights and boost Europe's digital economy*. It consists in a Regulation setting out a general EU framework for data protection and a Directive on protecting personal data processed for the purposes of prevention, detection, investigation or prosecution of criminal offences and related judicial activities. New rules focus on: enhancing a single market for personal data, on the one hand removing unnecessary administrative requirements for companies and on the other hand increasing responsibility and accountability for personal data processing (introducing Data breach notifications, Data Protection Officers, Binding corporate rules, Data Protection Impact Assessment...), strengthening National Supervisor Authorities' powers and cooperation, reinforcing individuals' rights giving people more control over their personal data and make it easier to access it (with new rules on consent, on data portability and on the right to information). They also include the right to be forgotten, that has generated great debate. It has been created especially for the online environment: the online users' right to have their data deleted if they withdraw their consent and if there are no other legitimate grounds for retaining the data. *The meeting will be held in English and Italian (no translation provided)*. She holds a Degree in Law (cum laude) and a PhD in Philosophy of Law and Legal Theory (University of Turin, 2007). Her main research fields are legal theory, privacy and data protection law, fundamental rights. In collaboration with the Nexa Center she has been involved in the EVPSI research project <http://www.evpsi.org/>, in the LAPSI Thematic Network <http://lapsi-project.eu/> and in the OPEN-DAI project <http://www.open-dai.eu/> studying privacy issues related to open data policies. *Maria Bottis*, assistant professor, Information law, Ionian University (Corfu, Greece). She holds a law Degree (with honors) from Athens Law School, a LLM degree (Cambridge Law School, UK, 1991), a LLM degree (Yale Law School, 1992) and a PhD on medical information law (University of Athens). "follow the money" sembra tutto ad un tratto piu' plausibile, piu' che la lotta per i diritti civili online. dal punto di vista pratico, CISPA, per quanto sostenga che sia "analisi passiva" e "raccolta dati preventiva", va tenuto a memoria che qualunque tipo di attacco attivo (censura a colpi di chiusura connesioni o hijacking DNS o TCP) ha come prerequisito l'accesso ai dati. anche a me. posso buttare li' un'altra cosa che mi perplime ? la prima offerta DSL e' del 2001, 11 anni fa. se abbiamo presente come e' cambiato il mondo tra 2000-2010, tra il 2010 ed il 2020 cambiera' ancora di piu', per effetto di internet la cosa che mi perplime e' che a governare in italia questo sviluppo sara' una autorita' televisione-centrica (anche leggendo Calabro' di ieri) con persone che, se va di lusso, sanno cosa e' un dslam ma non l'hadopi e se va male conoscono vita morte e miracoli di amici e parenti di persone influenti.. ciao, s. No, Arturo, a quanto mi consta è stato approvato dalla House of Representatives il 26 aprile e andrà poi al Senato. Mi lascia perplesso come ci sia stata tutta quella pressione contro Sopa e invece questo provvedimento, che per certi versi è ancora più preoccupante, sta andando avanti senza troppi problemi, anzi con l'appoggio di gran parte delle Internet Companies, anche se qualcuno, come Mozilla, si è schierato contro... Rather than simply a communication system, it has become the backbone of modern society. For many of us it is inconceivable to live life without being 'connected'. New and unexpected applications and services are emerging from cutting-edge technological developments, paving the road for future ones. The recent political and social changes in the Arab world, as a result of a new revolutionary wave of demonstrations and protests (Arab Spring), have repre-sented one of the most striking socio-economic and political developments worldwide. The use of the Internet in these crucial events has dramatically contributed to the spreading out of the protests by bridging the gaps of information between citizens and stimulating a better coordination in terms of actions. [image: futint-logo.jpg] The "*No Disconnect Strategy*" (NDS), launched in December 2011 by Neelie Kroes, Vice-President of the European Commission for the Digital Agenda, is one of the actions of the European Commission which recognizes the important role of the Internet and the ICT in the wider strategy for the promotion of Human Rights across the globe. It aims at providing citizens living in non-democratic regimes with the technological tools they need to shield them from indiscriminate surveillance or bypass disproportionate restrictions on their freedom to communicate. *Testing the possible tools and paradigms which may contribute to the goals of the NDS represents an interesting use case for the FIRE facilities, most of which are now planning their next open calls.* Workshop leaflet [image: download.gif]<http://cordis.europa.eu/fp7/ict/fire/docs/leaflet.pdf> Objectives This workshop is meant to create mutual awareness and effective synergies between these two EC initiatives, FIRE and the NDS.
