Caro Andrea, I respectfully disagree: un testo, infatti, non può essere tutto contemporaneamente. "I have a dream" (uso questo esempio perchè universalmente noto [1]) non può essere un discorso di ispirazione, intessuto di valori e di speranza, e allo stesso tempo un articolato di proposta di legge sull'integrazione razziale, o un libro bianco sul problema dei neri in Nord-America. E neanche un cauto bilanciamento di pro e di contro di tutti gli aspetti di un problema. E' un discorso politico-etico volto a motivare e a dare un'identità più forte a milioni di persone. Niente di più e niente di meno. Che come genere letterario possa dar fastidio a chi, come te, si confronta con le mille difficoltà del policy making reale, di tutti i giorni, lo capisco e lo rispetto. Ma la politica è fatta anche (e ripeto: _anche_) di discorsi e di testi di quel tipo, che secondo me è politicamente importante che ci siano, altro che "urla al vento". Neubot 0.4.12 released

Neubot 0.4.12 released http://neubot.org/neubot-0.4.12 Version 0.4.12 is the latest generally-available stable release of Neubot, distributed for Ubuntu >= 10.04, MacOSX >= 10.6, Windows >= XP SP3, FreeBSD and ArchLinux, as well as in source format. Here's what changed in less than 140 characters: IPv6 support, robustness wrt master server failure, ArchLinux package, preparatory work for more tests, cleanups, and bugfixes. Install, upgrade instructions at <http://www.neubot.org/download>. Read on for more details. This release contains 181 commits by 6 authors. The diffstat says: 129 changed files with 3,193 additions and 2,191 deletions. Here is the list of what changed and why: - IPv6 support. A lot of work has been performed to get Neubot ready for World IPv6 day <http://www.worldipv6launch.org/>. I'm still a bit skeptic that "this time is for real". Anyway working to prepare Neubot for that has been really challenging. Thanks to the M-Lab folks for prodding and discussion, and thank you also to ipv6.polito.it folks, that provided me with an IPv6 machine. - Support for ArchLinux. Written and contributed by Davide Allavena, with tweaks from Roberto D'Auria. Packages should be made available via AUR <http://aur.archlinux.org/> soon. - Robustness with respect to master server failure. Waiting for more radical changes that will make Neubot fully distributed, I've tweaked the code to rely on two master servers: the traditional one ("master.neubot.org") and a new backup ("master2.neubot.org"). Hence, if the master is down for some reason, the backup could be used. - Preparatory work for more tests. In the interest of making tests fully comparable, I've tweaked BitTorrent and speedtest test engines to allow for more, different tests. The BitTorrent engine now implements one version of the test (version "2") that looks like an HTTP download, and another version (version "3") that sends one request at a time, hence being more similar, in behavior, to a typical BitTorrent client (which typically does not pipeline requests to the same peer, as the current test does). Similarly, I've started working on the speedtest engine. Tweaking it to run a test similar to BitTorrent version "2". The piece that is missing is to implement into speedtest engine something similar to BitTorrent version "3" above. This is something I am working on, and hopefully it will be ready in one or two releases. Since this is experimental work, it is disabled by default: test engines behave exactly as they behaved before this change was implemented. Nonetheless, I decided to commit this piece of work, so that I can run experiments more easily. When this piece of work will be ready, Neubot will routinely run different versions of each test. And will offer comparison between versions that are specifically designed to be compared, e.g. version 2 of speedtest with version 2 of BitTorrent. - Enhancements. - Unify /api/bittorrent and /api/speedtest into /api/results. Written and contributed by Marco Scopesi. This is part of an ongoing effort to specify more clearly the API and refactor the web user interface. In particular, the refactoring will allow to autogenerate on-the-fly the result page for each test. In turn, this will be particularly relevant when more than one version of each test will be available, as mentioned above. - Improve the wording of update.html. Written by Felipe Busnello. The page text now clarifies that autoupdates for Windows are available but disabled by default. (They are disabled by default because signature verification of updates it not implemented yet. See the release announce of 0.4.11 for more information on this topic.) - Many log.py cleanups. Quest pursued by Marco Scopesi, who is performing a great work at simplifying and rationalizing the logger subsystem. Pieces of this work have been committed in this release, while other pieces are still under testing and will be likely included in next release. - Fix for IE8 plot bug. Joint work with Alessio Palmero Aprosio. With a bit of patience we found a development version of jqplot that works both with Internet Explorer 8 and decent web browsers (including Internet Explorer 9, who seems to be much better than its ancestor). - Merged more documentation into FAQs. Work done in part by me and in part by Davide Allavena. The ongoing effort in this area is to merge all existing documentation into the FAQs. Having everything in one single place allows for easier maintenance. - More bug fixes, enhancements and cleanups. Caro Juan Carlos, sono d'accordo con te: l'elemento "motivazionale" e` importante. Per questo ho detto che dal punto di vista retorico - termine che ho usato in senso letterale, senza alcun velato intento polemico - il testo di Lauren Weinstein e` ben fatto. Il problema e` che praticamente le stesse cose le diceva John Perry Barlow in un altro testo di cui riconosco sia la bellezza retorica (d'altronde, come aspettarsi di meno dal paroliere dei Grateful Dead?), sia la semi totale assenza di pragmatica, ovvero la "Declaration of Independence of Cyberspace" del 1996. Cioe` 12 anni fa. Con la differenza che 12 anni fa l'impatto di Internet era ben piu` limitato di oggi e dunque tale assenza era da un lato scusabile e dall'altro, tutto sommato, ininfluente. Ma che dopo 12 anni la "classe intellettuale" di Internet - categoria nella quale includo sia Barlow che Weinstein, senza per questo desumerne che le loro posizioni siano le uniche meritevoli di essere considerate "intellettuali", anzi - si esprima ancora con testi che sono al 99% retorica e all'1% (e mi sento generoso :) pragmatica, mi desta preoccupazione. Perche` significa che non siamo collettivamente ancora riusciti, come societa`, ad uscire del tutto da un paradigma iper-semplificatorio di cosa rappresenti Internet e di come affrontare le innumerevoli contraddizioni che esso genera; incluso l'aspetto "etico" che, mi permetto di osservare, e` ben piu` complesso dell'immagine che Barlow, Weinstein e altri "evangelisti di Internet" amano promuovere. Per carita`, i paletti, le chiamate alle armi, le visioni escatologiche e salvifiche servono a mobilitare le persone, spesso per fini nobili - ce lo insegna la storia. Cosi` come ci (o almeno mi) insegna che senza un ancoraggio reale nella pragmatica tali visioni possono trasformarsi nel migliore dei casi in urla al vento. Caro Andrea, non so se tu sia cinico o meno, lo lascio dire a te (ma conoscendoti mi sembra difficile :-)), ma mi sembra che le tue parole tradiscano un quanto meno temporaneo mancato apprezzamento di un aspetto importante della società civile (e, quindi, per esteso, della politica, almeno in democrazie come le nostre). Mi riferisco in particolare al fatto che molti esseri umani, molti ordinari cittadini si iniziano a interessare di determinati temi di pubblico interesse non perchè fulminati sulla strada di Damasco da, chessò?, un rapporto tecnico BEREC o un foglio di calcolo Eurostat. Molto più probabilmente iniziano, meritoriamente, a incuriosirsi di temi di policy perchè qualcuno ha parlato loro di determinate questioni facendo appello a valori, a una visione del mondo, a doveri verso la collettività o verso le generazioni future, e così via. Base etica che col tempo lascerà, almeno per qualcuno, sempre più spazio a una comprensione oggettiva e analitica dei problemi, ma che non potrà mai scomparire del tutto perchè solo con una motivazione etica di base le persone della società civile possono giustificare - innanzittutto con se stesse - il tempo, le energie e a volte il denaro spesi per questioni che non solo non solo personali, ma che assai spesso finiscono in sconfitte (o successi solo parziali). Testi come quelli di Lauren, quindi, a mio avviso servono allo stesso modo in cui sono sempre serviti discorsi "motivazionali", o di visione generale. Il chè non vuol dire che poi magari la stessa persona non sia capace di pragmatici negoziati in una commissione parlamentare o di produrre un documento oggettivo e ricco di sfumature. Ma hanno importanza, a seconda del momento e dell'audience, sia gli "I have a dream", sia le analisi pragmatiche. My 2 cents.
