US surveillance has gone too far, John Kerry admits

US surveillance has gone too far, John Kerry admits - theguardian.com
##
I humbly would remember that we have the definitive solution for all the problems caused, directly and indirectly, by the public careerists (even those constituting the NSA and FBI). We can simply dismiss them.
I pray you to note that the public careerists all around the world are perpetuating the design of the ancient tyrannical societies that are based exactly on the life-long assignment of the public jobs, charges, tasks. When democracy arrived, public careerists (primarily teachers, professors, constitutional experts, philosophers, jurists, etc.) should have explain that the conquest of sovereignty by the people on their res publica required the concrete participation to its roles. On the contrary the public careerists did not want to give up their privileges and only for this reason today we continue to live in arretrated societies, in despotic Countries.
Here is why I continue to pray you all to claim your fundamental right to participate to the roles of your Res Publica. Only by introducing the temporary assignment in every public employment we can achieve the Big Change.
Cryptography, technology could be our passions and we could be tempted to respond in similar ways. But we cannot forget our human duties and direct responsibilities in the course of events in our Countries and globally.
We must dismiss, depose, discharge all public careerists.
This is the first duty of peoples who claim democracy.
Many thanks,
Danilo D'Antonio

Re: [nexa] Fwd: ORG News: How the UK is standing against surveillance
by Federico Guerrini
considerazione.
È triste, ma è così.

by J.C.

WPost: "Tech companies urge lawmakers to reform NSA programs"
by J.C. DE MARTIN
*Tech companies urge lawmakers to reform NSA programs**
*
By Craig Timberg, Published: October 31 E-mail the writer
Facebook, Google, Apple and three other leading technology companies on
Thursday called for substantial reforms to the U.S. government's
surveillance programs, which have drawn new scrutiny in the aftermath of
revelations by former National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden.
The letter, sent to top members of the Senate Judiciary Committee,
endorses greater transparency in surveillance programs, long a goal for
tech companies that must comply with government data requests from
around the world. Yet it also goes further, urging U.S. lawmakers to
enact reforms that would "include substantial enhancements to privacy
protections and appropriate oversight and accountability mechanisms for
those programs."

Fwd: ORG News: How the UK is standing against surveillance
by David Orban

Subject: ORG News: How the UK is standing against surveillance
To: david(a)davidorban.com
Dear David Orban, here's your newsletter from the frontline of
digital rights: defending and promoting citizens' rights in the digital age
*ORG win: First UK surveillance debate*
Today the UK Parliament will be holding its first substantial
debate<https://www.openrightsgroup.org/blog/2013/ask-your-mp-to-join-the-surveilla…>on
mass surveillance since the first leaks back in June. This is a big
win
for ORG as MPs have heeded our calls for a debate in Parliament.
The MPs Tom Watson and Julian Huppert from ORG's Advisory Council, as well
as Dominic Raab MP, have secured a Westminster Hall debate in Parliament
today<http://services.parliament.uk/calendar/#%21/calendar/Commons/WestminsterHal…>on
'oversight of intelligence and security services.'
Politicians in America and Europe have held debates on oversight of
intelligence agencies, yet so far the UK Government has worried more about
whether the newspapers should have said anything at all. Now Parliament is
fulfilling its job of ensuring that intelligence agencies’ powers are
necessary and proportionate.
If you have a chance, call your MP this morning and ask them to take part
in the debate. There’s still time for you to call your MP and let them
know that
this issue matters to
you!<https://www.openrightsgroup.org/campaigns/phone-your-mp-will-they-turn-up-t…>
You can watch the debate live from 1.30pm.
<http://www.parliamentlive.tv/Main/Player.aspx?meetingId=13973>
*Privacy not Prism: £20k in 2 days*
Thank you for your overwhelming support of our Privacy not PRISM
<https://www.privacynotprism.org.uk/>campaign! We crowdfunded £20k to fund
a legal challenge at the European Court of Human Rights against the UK
Government’s surveillance of our data – and hit that goal over one weekend!
Not only did you help us raise the money in record time, but you also
proved that there is real public urgency towards stopping the mass
surveillance situation, and you *busted the myth* that the UK just doesn’t
care.
The challenge is being jointly taken by ourselves, Big Brother Watch,
English PEN and Internet campaigner Constanze Kurz. We are demanding that
the Government be held accountable to human rights law.
You can read more about it on the Privacy not Prism
site<https://www.privacynotprism.org.uk/>,
which is still accepting donations to further support the campaign.*

*Whistleblowers in the digital age* * * Former GCHQ director, David Omand,
investigative journalist Heather Brooke, and Malcolm Rifkind, Chairman of
the Intelligence and Security Committee: just a few of those who give
opinions on Edwards Snowden and the morals of whistleblowing in our latest
video. <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5X9hfPT2gpA>
The magnitude of Snowden's revelations has raised a huge debate around the
world about the balance between privacy and security, but also about
whistleblowers and their rights. The UK law protects the majority of
whistleblowers, but doesn't cover the security agencies' workers who deal
with secret information, as in Edward Snowden's case.

* UK Government: Both Open and Shut? *
This Friday is the Open Government Partnership London summit. The OGP is a
project to bring people dedicated to transparency from across the world to
make governments more accountable.
ORG will be leading a panel on transparency and
surveillance<http://www.opengovpartnership.org/get-involved/london-summit-2013/agenda/se…>.
We will be calling for Government to back its basic commitment to ‘open
society' by extending that idea to surveillance. We will look at how these
issues relate and how to protect human rights while enhancing openness.
The panel will be led by Mort Halperin (OSF) and includes Ian Brown
(Oxford Internet Institute), Jim Killock (ORG), Jacqueline Peschard
(Federal Institute for Access to Public Information, Mexico), David Banisar
(Article 19) and a representative of Brazilian government.
*Join a cryptoparty!*
Cryptoparties are a global movement: each one is an open event to help
people protect their computer and their private data. They are aimed at
complete beginners so you don’t need any technical knowledge to come along.
We’d like to help more of these events take place so everyone can
understand how to protect themselves from surveillance.
ORG will be speaking, taking part and helping people to run several of
these events in coming months:
-The ORG-Manchester group will be running one of these events joint with
their local Free Software Foundation Europe (FSFE) branch on Saturday 7th
December, Mad Lab <http://www.meetup.com/ORG-Manchester/>.
-At the London Crypto-Festival<https://londoncryptofestival.eventbrite.co.uk/>,
Saturday 30th November, Wendy Grossman and Ian Brown, members of our
Advisory Council will be speaking.
-Brighton cryptofestival
<https://www.cryptoparty.in/brighton_cryptofestival>(kid-friendly!) join
the ORG-Brighton group and Lighthouse for talks, workshops and kid events
at Sunday 1st December, Lighthouse, Brighton.
We’d like to encourage you to start one going too! We’ll help you promote
it and arrange speakers and provide advice if needed.
Join ORG today!
ORG have had some major victories in the last 2 months: We are small,
growing and effective. Join and become part of a movement fighting to
protect fundamental rights like privacy and free speech.
*NOW <https://www.openrightsgroup.org/join/> is the time to join
ORG<http://www.openrightsgroup.org/join>
*
*YOU are what makes our work possible. Without support from donations we
wouldn't be able to do any of the above work.*
* *Help us keep this work going and take on greater capacity to fight on
your behalf.
We can't do the necessary work we do without support from digital rights
activists like yourself
Please join here now. <https://www.openrightsgroup.org/join/>

* * Quick fire ORG actions
-We responded to President Obama’s review
board<https://www.openrightsgroup.org/ourwork/reports/response-to-us-surveillance…>on
the scale of NSA surveillance. We responded to emphasise the need to
respect non-US people's privacy rights and to restrain untargeted, mass
surveillance.
-We responded to the IPO's copyright in Europe
consultation<https://www.openrightsgroup.org/ourwork/reports/response-to-ipo-copyright-i…>,
raising concerns about DRM, disabled access and parody.
-We criticised the Culture Committee’s recent copyright
report<https://www.openrightsgroup.org/blog/2013/org-response-to-cms-committee-rep…>as
one-sided and simplistic, reducing the debate to either liking the
creative industries or not.
- We responded jointly with the Open Knowledge Foundation and Open
Corporates to an HMRC consultation on releasing the VAT
Register<https://www.openrightsgroup.org/ourwork/reports/consultation-on-proposals-f…>with
general support for the notion.

NYT: "Warily, Schools Watch Students on the Internet"
by J.C. DE MARTIN
October 28, 2013
*Warily, Schools Watch Students on the Internet*
By SOMINI SENGUPTA
SAN FRANCISCO --- For years, a school principal's job was to make sure
students were not creating a ruckus in the hallways or smoking in the
bathroom. Vigilance ended at the schoolhouse gates.
Now, as students complain, taunt and sometimes cry out for help on
social media, educators have more opportunities to monitor students
around the clock. And some schools are turning to technology to help
them. Several companies offer services to filter and glean what students
do on school networks; a few now offer automated tools to comb through
off-campus postings for signs of danger. For school officials, this
raises new questions about whether they should --- or legally can ---
discipline children for their online outbursts.
The problem has taken on new urgency with the case of a 12-year-old
Florida girl who committed suicide after classmates relentlessly bullied
her online and offline.
Two girls --- ages 12 and 14 --- who the authorities contend were her
chief tormentors were arrested this month after one posted a Facebook
comment about her death.
Educators find themselves needing to balance students' free speech
rights against the dangers children can get into at school and sometimes
with the law because of what they say in posts on Facebook, Twitter and
Tumblr. Courts have started to weigh in.

by Giovanni Battista Gallus
intervento "volante" ;-)
