by Paolo Brini

Salve, vi segnalo questo articolo di Cory Doctorow: We are Huxleying ourselves into the full Orwell. Try as I might, I can’t shake the feeling that 2014 is the year we lose the Web. The W3C push for DRM in all browsers is going to ensure that all interfaces built in HTML5 (which will be pretty much everything) will be opaque to users, and it will be illegal to report on security flaws in them (because reporting a security flaw in DRM exposes you to risk of prosecution for making a circumvention device), so they will be riddled with holes that creeps, RATters, spooks, authoritarians and crooks will be able to use to take over your computer and fuck you in every possible way. http://mostlysignssomeportents.tumblr.com/post/72759474218/we-are-huxleying… Ciao, Paolo

Last Reminder - ISHTIP Workshop 2014: The Instability of Intellectual Property

by Maurizio Borghi

The Sixth Annual ISHTIP Workshop 2014 The Instability of Intellectual Property Uppsala, Sweden JULY 2-4, 2014 http://www.ishtip.org/uppsala2014 Hosted by the Department of Archival Science, Library & Information Science and Museology & Heritage Studies (ALM), Uppsala University in collaboration with the Faculty of Law, Uppsala University. The International Society for the History and Theory of Intellectual Property (ISHTIP: http://www.ishtip.org/) invites to its sixth annual workshop. This time it will be held at Uppsala University and focus on the ways in which intellectual property moves and travels across disciplinary, legal, linguistic, and geopolitical borders. Instability can refer to the way intellectual property law seeks to pin down a legal regime for increasingly unstable works. Instability can refer to the interdisciplinarity of intellectual property scholarship, as it tries to navigate and expand across and beyond disciplinary traditions. Instability can refer to the many processes of cultural and legal translation and transculturation involved in flows of culture. We encourage a broad variety of historical and/or contemporary topics that explore interdisciplinary and international aspects of intellectual property, engaging with the diversity and plurality of legal and linguistic traditions. We are particularly interested in receiving contributions that deploy a self-reflexive epistemological outlook on the study of intellectual property. Possible topics include but are not limited to: * translation and appropriation * perceptions of instability in different times and places and strategies deployed for dealing with that instability * transnationalism * legal borrowing * comparative legal and cultural studies * hybridity (in both cultural and legal terms, for instance scientific property) * processes of commodification and conversion * the interplay between international, regional and local law/culture * IP from below * ”centre-periphery” relations * interchanges, translations and borrowings between various intellectual properties and jurisdictions * Submissions of paper proposals should be made to ishtip2014(a)gmail.com<mailto:ishtip2014@gmail.com> and include a 300 word abstract, a one paragraph author bio and two page CV. Deadline for submission of proposals is Wednesday, January 15, 2014. Please note that after the workshop, presenters will be invited to submit revised papers for publication in a special issue of the peer-reviewed, open access journal Culture Unbound http://www.cultureunbound.ep.liu.se Thanks to the generous support of The Swedish Foundation for Humanities and Social Sciences (Riksbankens Jubileumsfond) http://www.rj.se/english/about_rj the workshop is free of charge. GNI Report Finds Google, Microsoft, and Yahoo Compliant with Free Expression and Privacy Principles

by J.C. DE MARTIN

GNI Report Finds Google, Microsoft, and Yahoo Compliant with Free Expression and Privacy Principles Date: Wednesday, January 8, 2014 - 09:00 WASHINGTON, DC---The Global Network Initiative today released a public report <http://globalnetworkinitiative.org/sites/default/files/GNI%20Assessments%20…>on the independent assessments of founding companies Google, Microsoft, and Yahoo. The assessments looked at cases of government requests implicating the rights of Internet users, and found that each company is making a good faith effort to implement GNI's Principles on Freedom of Expression and Privacy, and to improve over time. "These independent assessments---the first of their kind---present a major step forward on human rights accountability in the technology sector," said GNI Board Chair Jermyn Brooks. "They demonstrated in the many specific cases examined how companies, applying the GNI Principles, have in fact been able to limit the removal of content and the release of personal data as a result of government requests," he continued. The assessments focused on products and services that in the company's view posed the most salient risks to freedom of expression and privacy---search, email, and photo and video sharing services---with cases identified through a process that included consultation with GNI's non-company members. The report presents information in aggregate or anonymized form in order to allow public disclosure of how the companies review and respond to government requests without disclosing confidential information. The report also details examples of the recommendations made by the assessors to one or more companies. The process did not and cannot determine whether the companies have acted appropriately with respect to each of the many thousands of requests received each year from governments. Wired: "How the NSA Almost Killed the Internet"

by J.C. DE MARTIN

*How the NSA Almost Killed the Internet* BY STEVEN LEVY 01.07.146:30 AM Google, Facebook, Microsoft, and the other tech titans have had to fight for their lives against their own government. An exclusive look inside their year from hell---and why the Internet will never be the same. On June 6, 2013, Washington Post reporters called the communications departments of Apple, Facebook, Google, Yahoo, and other Internet companies. The day before, a report in the British newspaper The Guardian had shocked Americans with evidence that the telecommunications giant Verizon had voluntarily handed a database of every call made on its network to the National Security Agency. The piece was by reporter Glenn Greenwald, and the information came from Edward Snowden, a 29-year-old IT consultant who had left the US with hundreds of thousands of documents detailing the NSA's secret procedures. Greenwald was the first but not the only journalist that Snowden reached out to. The Post's Barton Gellman had also connected with him. Now, collaborating with documentary filmmaker and Snowden confidante Laura Poitras, he was going to extend the story to Silicon Valley. Gellman wanted to be the first to expose a top-secret NSA program called Prism. Snowden's files indicated that some of the biggest companies on the web had granted the NSA and FBI direct access to their servers, giving the agencies the ability to grab a person's audio, video, photos, emails, and documents. The government urged Gellman not to identify the firms involved, but Gellman thought it was important. "Naming those companies is what would make it real to Americans," he says. Now a team of Post reporters was reaching out to those companies for comment. [...] Continua qui: http://www.wired.com/threatlevel/2014/01/how-the-us-almost-killed-the-inter…

Call for Chapter Proposals - tema Smart Cities

by Enrico Masala

Segnalo questa call per capitoli di libro riguardante le smart cities, editors sono colleghi presso l'Istituto Boella. Cordialmente, Enrico Masala [Apologies if you got multiple copies of this email.] *==================================================================* *CALL FOR CHAPTER PROPOSALS* *Proposal Submission Deadline: February 15, 2014* *Social, Economic, and Environmental Sustainability in the Development of Smart Cities* * * *A book edited by* * * *Andrea Vesco, Ph.D. and Francesco Ferrero* *(Istituto Superiore Mario Boella, Italy)* * * *To be published by IGI Global: http://bit.ly/1cGumux * *==================================================================* For release in the Advances in Electronic Government, Digital Divide, and Regional Development (AEGDDRD) Book Series. The Advances in Electronic Government, Digital Divide & Regional Development (AEGDDRD) book series aims to publish authored, edited and case books encompassing the current and innovative research and practice discussing all aspects of electronic government development, implementation and adoption as well the effective use of the emerging technologies (including social media and mobile technologies) for a more effective electronic governance (or e-governance). Introduction The human population is becoming ever more concentrated in urban areas. Cities are thus becoming the key place to address the sustainability issues and improve the Quality-of-Life (QoL) of the citizens. The Smart City subject addresses the issues of urban development with particular emphasis on triple sustainability, e.g., social, economic and environmental sustainability at the same time. The process of developing smart and sustainable cities can succeed only by adopting a holistic and integrated approach to urban planning and management starting from the real needs of citizens. The collective intelligence of urban communities and the Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) can be exploited to enable intelligent urban decision-making and to improve the QoL of citizens without affecting the opportunities of future generations. Objective of the Book This book wants to address the whole spectrum of subjects related to smart cities, while spreading the culture of economic, social and environmental sustainability. This objective will be pursued by providing: (i) the tools for the construction of territorial policies that meet the needs of urban communities, (ii) an overview of the main technologies in support of integrated planning, smarter management and development of new sustainable infrastructure and services and (iii) addressing the new funding opportunities to accelerate the development of smart cities around the globe. Target Audience The book is mainly intended to be a guidance reference for researchers (academies and public-private research centers), investors, practitioners and businesses in different fields willing to play a key role in the smart city game. Moreover the book can be potentially used in to train managing authorities and staff working at different levels within local and regional institutions. Recommended topics include, but are not limited to, the following: . Definition of smart city and the concept of triple sustainability. . Methods to define the real needs of citizens. . Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to measure the smartness of cities. . The role of citizens and institutions in the development of smart cities. . Open-data and Big-data as an enabler of urban smartness. . ICT-based solutions in the smart city application domains (planning, government, mobility, energy, water, waste and pollution). . The use of Decision Support Systems (DSS) in city planning and management. . New funding models to accelerate the development of smart cities in time of economic crisis. Submission Procedure Researchers and practitioners are invited to submit on or before February 15, 2014, a 2-3 page chapter proposal clearly explaining the mission and concerns of his or her proposed chapter. Authors of accepted proposals will be notified by April 28, 2014 about the status of their proposals and sent chapter guidelines. Full chapters are expected to be submitted by June 15, 2014. All submitted chapters will be reviewed on a double-blind review basis. Contributors may also be requested to serve as reviewers for this project. Publisher This book is scheduled to be published by IGI Global (formerly Idea Group Inc.), publisher of the Information Science Reference (formerly Idea Group Reference), Medical Information Science Reference, Business Science Reference, and Engineering Science Reference imprints.
