Re: [nexa] "The leaked New York Times innovation report is one of the key documents of this media age"

by David Orban

David Orban skype, twitter, linkedin, sl, etc: davidorban On Mon, May 19, 2014 at 9:17 AM, J.C. Re: [nexa] W3C spinge per DRM in tutti i browser

by Pier Paolo Franco

Followups: http://www.geek.com/news/firefoxs-new-drm-support-isnt-what-it-sounds-like-… Firefox isn’t getting a DRM module. Instead, it’s getting something of conduit that allows a user to choose to bolt on EME when protected content is accessed. The process should go like this: fire up an HTML5 video on Netflix for the first time, and Firefox will say “Hey, you need EME support. Do you want me to fetch it from Adobe (who’s supplying the actual DRM bits) for you?” If you say yes, then Firefox opens the portal, sucks down the component, and you’re good to go. Enjoy all the DRM-wrapped content you want! If, however, the idea of DRM repulses you, well, then you can simply say no and that’s that. And really, if you hate DRM that much you probably shouldn’t be subscribing to Netflix anyway. What Mozilla is implementing isn’t fundamentally any different than the way it handles plug-ins like Flash, Silverlight, or Java. Stumble across a web page with Firefox when you don’t have one of them installed, and it’ll prompt you. What it won’t do, though, is automatically install that plug-in. That choice is yours. If you don’t like the thought of Flash or Silverlight invading your DRM-free PC, then you can simply deny the installation. "The leaked New York Times innovation report is one of the key documents of this media age"

by J.C. DE MARTIN

*The leaked New York Times innovation report is one of the key documents of this media age** */It's an astonishing look inside the cultural change still needed in the shift to digital --- even in one of the world's greatest newsrooms. Read it.// /By Joshua Benton There are few things that can galvanize the news world's attention like a change in leadership atop The New York Times. Jill Abramson's ouster yesterday afternoon probably reduced American newsroom productivity enough to skew this quarter's GDP numbers. We don't typically write about intra-newsroom politics at Nieman Lab, leaving that to Manhattan's very capable cadre of media reporters. But Abramson's removal and Dean Baquet's ascent has apparently inspired someone inside the Times to leak one of the most remarkable documents I've seen in my years running the Lab, to Myles Tanzer at BuzzFeed. It's the full report of the newsroom innovation team that was given six full months to ask big questions about the Times' digital strategy. (A summary version of it was leaked last week, but this is the big kahuna.) [...] Continua qui: http://www.niemanlab.org/2014/05/the-leaked-new-york-times-innovation-repor…

Re: [nexa] "Study indicates Robots could replace 80% of Jobs"

by Stefano Quintarelli

On 16/05/2014 12:07, J.C. Independent Report on E-voting in Estonia

by J.C. DE MARTIN

Vi anticipo l'ultima frase dell'Executive Summary: /"use of the Estonian I-voting system should be immediately discontinued."/ * *juan carlos * _Independent Report on E-voting in Estonia_** * A security analysis of Estonia's Internet voting system by international e-voting experts. *Executive Summary* (Full technical report to be published here Monday, May 12.) This report was prepared by an independent group of international experts with experience of analyzing e-voting systems around the world. The team performed a security evaluation of Estonia's Internet-based e-voting system. Estonia is the only country in the world that relies on Internet voting in a significant way for legally-binding national elections --- in recent polls, 20-25% of voters cast their ballots online. The team sought to understand its strengths and weaknesses in order to inform technologists and decision makers globally about the prospects of Internet voting. The researchers studied the system by observing e-voting operations during Estonia's 2013 municipal elections, analyzing published documents, software, and source code, then conducting experiments with a laboratory recreation of the I-voting system. The analysis showed a number of serious security problems: *Obsolete threat model* The Estonian system uses a security architecture that may have been adequate when the system was introduced a decade ago, but it [...] Continua qui: https://estoniaevoting.org/findings/

"Study indicates Robots could replace 80% of Jobs"

by J.C. DE MARTIN

*Study indicates Robots could replace 80% of Jobs** * Posted on April 16, 2014 by Colin Lewis In a few decades, twenty or thirty years --- or sooner -- robots and their associated technology will be as ubiquitous as mobile phones are today, at least that is the prediction of Bill Gates; and we would be hard-pressed to find a roboticist, automation expert or economist who could present a strong case against this. The Robotics Revolution promises a host of benefits that are compelling (especially in health care) and imaginative, but it may also come at a significant price. * **The Pareto Principle of Prediction* We find ourselves faced with an intractable paradox: On the one hand technology advances increase productivity and wellbeing, and on the other hand it often reinforces inequalities. A new study due to be published in the forthcoming Oxford Handbook of Skills and Training by Stuart Elliot visiting analyst at the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), who incidentally is on leave from the Board on Testing and Assessment of the National Research Council, indicates that technology could replace 'workers for 80 percent of current jobs.'
