Slate: "Why has Google forsaken MetaFilter?"

by J.C. DE MARTIN

*Why has Google forsaken MetaFilter?* By David Auerbach Is Google broken? Or is your site broken? That's the question any webmaster asks when she sees her Google click-throughs drop dramatically. It's a question that Matt Haughey, founder of legendary Internet forum MetaFilter, has been asking himself for the last year and a half, as declining ad revenues have forced the long-running site to lay off several of its staff. MetaFilter, Haughey told me, made the bulk of its revenue through Google's AdSense program. That is, MetaFilter worked with Google ad representatives to place advertising on its pages that was served by Google. In turn, most of MetaFilter's visitors came via Google searches. (MetaFilter's members pay a small one-time signup fee to see no advertising; I am a member but not a terribly active one. I should also disclose here that I used to work for Google and my wife still does.) [...] Continua qui: http://www.slate.com/articles/technology/bitwise/2014/05/metafilter_layoffs…

il diritto a non essere indicizzati: la controversa questione del diritto all'oblio

by Simone Aliprandi

-- Simone Aliprandi - http://www.aliprandi.org | http://www.array.eu

Authors Alliance: "Promoting authorship for the public good by supporting authors who write to be read"

by J.C. DE MARTIN

*Promoting authorship for the public good by supporting authors who write to be read.* The Authors Alliance embraces the unprecedented potential digital networks have for the creation and distribution of knowledge and culture. We represent the interests of authors who want to harness this potential to share their creations more broadly in order to serve the public good. Unfortunately, authors face many barriers that prevent the full realization of this potential to enhance public access to knowledge and creativity. Authors who are eager to share their existing works may discover that those works are out of print, un-digitized, and subject to copyrights signed away long before the digital age. Authors who are eager to share new works may feel torn between publication outlets that maximize public access and others that restrict access but provide important value in terms of peer review, prestige, or monetary reward. Authors may also struggle to understand how to navigate fair use and the rights clearance process in order to lawfully build on existing works. The mission of Authors Alliance is to further the public interest in facilitating widespread access to works of authorship by assisting and representing authors who want to disseminate knowledge and products of the imagination broadly. We provide information and tools designed to help authors better understand and manage key legal, technological, and institutional aspects of authorship in the digital age. We are also a voice for authors in discussions about public and institutional policies that might promote or inhibit the broad dissemination they seek. URL: http://www.authorsalliance.org/

Fwd: [IP] How the NSA is Transforming Law Enforcement

NSA surveillance has become a part of day-to-day law enforcement fabric in the United States. The Snowden disclosures <https://www.eff.org/document/20140513-greenwald-noplacetohidedocuments> that were made public as part of Glenn Greenwald’s book /No Place to Hide/ <http://glenngreenwald.net/> drive this point home, and they emphasize why we need real change to government surveillance, not minor reforms. There are two key points necessary to understand the domestic aspect of NSA surveillance: the integral role <http://complex.foreignpolicy.com/posts/2013/11/14/the_fbi_is_helping_the_ns…> of the FBI in helping the NSA <http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2014/apr/19/hoovers-fbi-todays-sur…> spy on Americans, and the acceptance of usage of NSA material for domestic and traditional law enforcement purposes. These are contingent, of course, on the fact that the NSA’s procedures allow widespread targeting of Americans <https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2013/06/depth-review-new-nsa-documents-expose…>. Much of the material published on May 13 expanded on the disturbing revelations that we’ve already seen, but there were some standout points: new information about the degree of spying on the U.N. and other foreign officials, documents demonstrating the economic espionage aspect of NSA surveillance, and some interesting technical details about NSA programs. Among those technical details, what was especially striking for those of us in the United States were the slides that described how the FBI enables NSA surveillance. A series of slides demonstrated that the FBI essentially serves as an attack dog for the NSA, doing the NSA’s domestic dirty work. One slide, which was previously published, notes that for purposes of PRISM, relationships with communications providers are only through the FBI. (slide23.jpg <safari-reader://www.eff.org/files/2014/05/20/slide23.jpg>). Another slide describes how the FBI and NSA partner to “address an unreliable and incomplete Facebook collection system.” (slide81.jpg <safari-reader://www.eff.org/files/2014/05/20/slide81.jpg>). There are also a series of slides describing the FBI’s relationship with Microsoft. One notes that the NSA is now able to collect Microsoft Skydrive data as a “result of the FBI working for many months with Microsoft to get this tasking and collection solution established .” (slide27.jpg <safari-reader://www.eff.org/files/2014/05/20/slide27.jpg>). The documents also show that the NSA, Department of Justice, and FBI collaborated to collect Skype data. (slide29.jpg <safari-reader://www.eff.org/files/2014/05/20/slide29.jpg>). Similarly, after Microsoft enabled encrypted chat: “MS, working with the FBI, developed a surveillance capability to deal with the new SSL.” (slide30.jpg <safari-reader://www.eff.org/files/2014/05/20/slide30.jpg>). Clearly, the NSA would have a much more difficult—if not impossible—time collecting information without the FBI. None of this should be surprising. It's easy to forget that Section 215 of the Patriot Act allows the Federal Bureau of Investigation—/not/ the NSA—to apply for production of business records <http://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/50/1861>. Remember the Verizon order <https://www.eff.org/document/2013-06-05-guard-verizon-215-secondary-order> that jumpstarted the NSA surveillance conversation? That order was an application to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court /by the FBI/ for production of Verizon’s business records to the NSA. Fwd: Matteo Renzi vuole Consigli: rispondiamo

by Pier Paolo Franco

Grazie.

Berkman Center Webcast live oggi ore 18.30 - You, me, and my computer

by Giuseppe Futia

You, me, and my computer http://cyber.law.harvard.edu/events/luncheon/2014/05/mccarthy <http://cyber.law.harvard.edu/events/luncheon/2014/05/jayaram> *Lauren McCarthy, artist and programmer* Today, 6.30 pm Webcast live: http://cyber.law.harvard.edu/interactive/webcast http://nexa.polito.it/berkman-webcast-live Can we use technology to help us be more human? To smile more, to touch and to listen to each other? What if a computer could understand and make decisions about our social relationships better than we could ourselves? Would our interactions be improved by computationally determining what to do and say? What happens if we crowdsource our dating lives and actually find love? This is a discussion of attempts to understand these questions through an artistic practice involving hacking, design and self-experimentation. About Lauren Lauren McCarthy is an artist and programmer based in Brooklyn, NY. She is adjunct faculty at RISD and NYU ITP, a researcher in resident at ITP, and recently a resident at Eyebeam. She holds an MFA from UCLA and a BS Computer Science and BS Art and Design from MIT. Her work explores the structures and systems of social interactions, identity, and self-representation, and the potential for technology to mediate, manipulate, and evolve these interactions. She is fascinated by the slightly uncomfortable moments when patterns are shifted, expectations are broken, and participants become aware of the system. At Sosolimited and Small Design Firm, Lauren has worked on installations for the London Eye, North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences, IBM, US Holocaust Memorial Museum, Metropolitan Museum of Art, and Thomas Jefferson’s home at Monticello. She has also worked at Oblong Industries, Continuum and the MIT Media Lab. Her artwork has been shown in a variety of contexts, including the Conflux Festival, SIGGRAPH, LACMA, the Japan Media Arts Festival, Share Festival, File Festival, the WIRED Store, and probably to you without you knowing it at some point while interacting with her.
