Paper: "Privacy Leakage in Mobile Computing: Tools, , Methods, and Characteristics"

by J.C. DE MARTIN

*Privacy Leakage in Mobile Computing: Tools, Methods, and Characteristics* Muhammad Haris, The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology Hamed Haddadi, Queen Mary University of London and Qatar Computing Research Institute Pan Hui, The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (mhmughees, panhui)(a)cse.ust.hk, and hamed(a)eecs.qmul.ac.uk *Abstract*—The number of smartphones, tablets, sensors, and connected wearable devices are rapidly increasing. Today, in many parts of the globe, the penetration of mobile computers has overtaken the number of traditional personal computers. This trend and the always-on nature of these devices have resulted in increasing concerns over the intrusive nature of these devices and the privacy risks that they impose on users or those associated with them. In this paper, we survey the current state of the art on mobile computing research, focusing on privacy risks and data leakage effects. We then discuss a number of methods, recommendations, and ongoing research in limiting the privacy leakages and associated risks by mobile computing. http://arxiv.org/pdf/1410.4978v1.pdf

Paper: "Law is Code: A Software Engineering Approach to Analyzing the United States Code"

by J.C. DE MARTIN

*"Law is Code: A Software Engineering Approach to Analyzing the United States Code"* written in collaboration with William Li, Pablo Azar, and Andrew Lo of MIT CSAIL and Berkman Alumnus Phil Hill. Abstract: The agglomeration of rules and regulations over time has produced a body of legal code that no single individual can fully comprehend. This complexity produces inefficiencies, makes the processes of understanding and changing the law difficult, and frustrates the fundamental principle that the law should provide fair notice to the governed. In this article, we take a quantitative, unbiased, and software-engineering approach to analyze the evolution of the United States Code from 1926 to today. Software engineers frequently face the challenge of understanding and managing large, structured collections of instructions, directives, and conditional statements, and we adapt and apply their techniques to the U.S. Code over time. Our work produces insights into the structure of the U.S. Code as a whole, its strengths and vulnerabilities, and new ways of thinking about individual laws. For example, we identify the first appearance and spread of important terms in the U.S. Code like "whistleblower" and "privacy." We also analyze and visualize the network structure of certain substantial reforms, including the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) and the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act, and show how the interconnections of references can increase complexity and create the potential for unintended consequences. Our work is a timely illustration of computational approaches to law as the legal profession embraces technology for scholarship, to increase efficiency, and to improve access to justice. http://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=2511947 The final version will be available this spring in the Journal of Business & Technology Law.

Hungary plans new tax on Internet traffic, public calls for rally

by fabio chiusi

(Reuters) - Hungary plans to impose a new tax on Internet data transfers, a draft 2015 tax bill submitted to parliament late on Tuesday showed, in a move that could hit Internet and telecoms providers and their customers hard. The draft tax code contains a provision for Internet providers to pay a tax of 150 forints (37 pence) per gigabyte of data traffic, though it would also let companies offset corporate income tax against the new levy. Within hours of the tax provision being published over 100,000 people joined a Facebook group protesting the levy, which they fear providers will pass on to them. Thousands said they would rally against the tax, which they said was excessive, outside the Economy Ministry on Sunday. Hungary plans new tax on Internet traffic, public calls for rally

by J.C.

The Future of Europe is Science”.

by J.C.

Culture and Economy in the Internet Age (Amsterdam University Press, 2012), che Doppiozero aveva recensito qui.
