Apathy, convenience or irrelevance?
by Giuseppe Attardi Oct. 5, 2020

The bigger threat of corporate surveillance and data profiling practices is its ability to usurp individual agency and self-determination through its predictive functions which pre- determine opportunities, not only consumer choices, but individual access to a range of opportunities such as access to finance, insurance, education, work, social connection, knowledge and interests, thereby determining life outcomes for us. > https://www.socialresearchnz.com/post/apathy-convenience-or-irrelevance-ide… <https://www.socialresearchnz.com/post/apathy-convenience-or-irrelevance-ide…>

John Pilger: "EYEWITNESS TO THE TRIAL AND AGONY OF JULIAN ASSANGE"
by J.C. DE MARTIN Oct. 5, 2020

Oct. 5, 2020

John Pilger: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Pilger jc ----- *EYEWITNESS TO THE TRIAL AND AGONY OF JULIAN ASSANGE* 2 October 2020 /John Pilger has watched Julian Assange's extradition trial from the public gallery at London's Old Bailey. He spoke with Timothy Erik Ström of Arena magazine, Australia:// / *Q: Having watched Julian Assange's trial first-hand, can you describe the prevailing atmosphere in the court?* The prevailing atmosphere has been shocking. I say that without hesitation; I have sat in many courts and seldom known such a corruption of due process; this is due revenge. Putting aside the ritual associated with 'British justice', at times it has been evocative of a Stalinist show trial. One difference is that in the show trials, the defendant stood in the court proper. In the Assange trial, the defendant was caged behind thick glass, and had to crawl on his knees to a slit in the glass, overseen by his guard, to make contact with his lawyers. His message, whispered barely audibly through face masks, WAS then passed by post-it the length of the court to where his barristers were arguing the case against his extradition to an American hellhole. Consider this daily routine of Julian Assange, an Australian on trial for truth-telling journalism. He was woken at five o'clock in his cell at Belmarsh prison in the bleak southern sprawl of London. The first time I saw Julian in Belmarsh, having passed through half an hour of 'security' checks, including a dog's snout in my rear, I found a painfully thin figure sitting alone wearing a yellow armband. He had lost more than 10 kilos in a matter of months; his arms had no muscle. His first words were: 'I think I am losing my mind'. Digital Humanism-Umanesimo Digitale 9 ottobre
by Viola Schiaffonati Oct. 5, 2020

Oct. 5, 2020

by Nexa Media Oct. 5, 2020

Oct. 5, 2020

Per partecipare all'incontro: https://meet.nexacenter.org/MercolediNexa A brief survey of *net art from the 1990s and early 00s* will demonstrate the challenges faced by curators and preservationists. The *absence of physical art objects* presents the *central problem*. Although some works of art can be meaningfully reproduced, often all that is left is documentation and some physical artifacts. This presents countless trappings because art's borders are necessarily blurry. *Works of engineering* must provide their prescribed functionality. Results from *scientific processes* must be replicable. Art's subtle intent is always in danger of being overshadowed. For example, *technological artifacts* such as period computers may depict *networked artwork* as a relationship between things when, in reality, the artwork is *about relationships between people*. The savvy archivist knows that every net artist casts human concerns in the shape of computation using the tools of their day. The nature of the medium dictates that individual artifacts are trivial to reproduce if stored properly. However, the interdependent digital systems that are the artifacts' raison d'être are impossible to recreate. This seminar will address the *existential questions*, *current best practices*, and *future technologies* that may help combat a generational loss of culture. BIOGRAFIE - e informazioni supplementari [mercoledì133] *David SCHMUDDE* is a researcher and computational artist who creates experiences that examine the everyday realities of our post-digital society. Over the last fifteen years, he has installed interactive work at the Center for Holographic Arts in New York City, projected video art in the Schusev Museum of Architecture in Moscow, performed at the Chicago Museum of Contemporary Art, screened at the Chinese Theater in Los Angeles. The corruption of defi in 2020
by Giacomo Tesio Oct. 4, 2020

Oct. 4, 2020

I decided to publish this anonymously so that the message would not be dismissed as virtue signaling. Anyone who communicates this message would be rejected by the decentralized finance (“defi”) community. There is an unspoken agreement between defi insiders and the bad actors that they protect. The insiders do not challenge malfeasance, and for their leniency they are rewarded with privileged information. If an outsider draws attention to the corruption, the insiders dutifully defend the bad actors by saying it only looks bad from the outside. The rationalization goes like this — it’s really hard to understand how legitimate everything is unless you contribute to the space. Non-contributors who feel victimized by insiders should blame themselves. They volunteered for abuse. It is a permissionless system. This is the twisted song and dance that drove defi profit-making in late 2020. Offer something to the space, and draw closer to the center. See something suspect? Keep quiet to draw further in, or raise a fuss and be phased out. A community that rewards bad actors and punishes good ones will soon find itself full of people who are openly hostile to discussions of virtue. New recruits will fit a certain mold, and the oldest members will look away and acquiesce to the turpitude. Stunningly, in an industry full of technical analysts, no one seems concerned about the long-term trajectory of this arrangement. Giacomo
