by Fabio Pietrosanti (naif) - lists May 6, 2019

May 6, 2019

-naif

Convegno "Microwork platforms: a challenge for artificial intelligence and employment?" (Paris 13-14 giugno 2019)
by Antonio Casilli May 6, 2019

May 6, 2019

---- MICROWORK PLATFORMS: A CHALLENGE FOR ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE, A CHALLENGE FOR EMPLOYMENT? In the wake of digitalization and artificial intelligence, what role do microtasking platforms play in the transformation of work? Two days to discuss micro-work from policy and academic perspectives. Day 1 (Policy perspectives, 13 June 2019). Register here: https://f.infos.france-strategie.fr/c/?s=162A-9D-2 Day 2 (Academic perspectives, 14 June 2019). By invitation only. France Stratégie, MSH-Paris Saclay, and INDL (International Network on Digital Labor), convene a two-day international conference in Paris on June 13-14, 2019. The event will include a « meet the microworkers » panel on June 13, where workers, platform owners and client companies will take the stage, as well as the first INDL PhD workshop on June 14. There will also be presentations of the results of national and international surveys on these emerging forms of work, and discussions with French and international academic and institutional experts, as well as worker representatives. After Uber, Deliveroo and other on-demand services, microwork is a new form of labor mediated by digital platforms. Internet and mobile services recruit crowds to perform small, standardized and repetitive tasks on behalf of corporate clients, in return for fees ranging from few cents to few euros. These tasks generally require low skills: taking a picture in a store, recognizing and classifying images, transcribing bits of text, formatting an electronic file… Despite their apparent simplicity, these micro-tasks performed by millions of people around the world, are crucial to create the databases needed to calibrate and « train » artificial intelligence algorithms. Internationally, Amazon Mechanical Turk is the most widely known micro-work platform. In France and in French-speaking Africa, other platforms are attracting a growing number of workers to supplement or even substitute for their primary income. How widespread is the phenomenon? How to recognize, organize and regulate this new form of work? How, finally, does it relate to traditional forms of employment? Presentations and discussions on Day 1 will be held in French and English, with simultaneous translation. For Day 2 presentations and discussions will be in English. Conference speakers include: Mariya Aleksynska, IZA Gilles Babinet, CNNum Daniel Benoilid, co-founder of Wirk / Foulefactory Stijn Broecke, OECD Antonio Casilli, Telecom ParisTech & DiPLab project Alessandro Delfanti, University of Toronto Joseph Dureau, CTO of Snips Ulrich Laitenberger, Telecom ParisTech Vili Lehdonvirta, Oxford Internet Institute Clément Le Ludec, MSH Paris Saclay Johan Lindquist, University of Stockholm Anoush Margaryan, Copenhagen Business School Gilles de Margerie, Commissioner General of France Stratégie Florian Alexander Schmidt, Dresden University of Technology Paola Tubaro, CNRS & DiPLab project Patricia Vendramin, Catholic University of Leuven Louis-Charles Viossat, IGAS Thiebaut Weber, independent researcher, former CES Niels Van Doorn, University of Amsterdam -- Antonio A. Casilli Associate Professor (HDR), Telecom ParisTech Member, Interdisciplinary Institute for Innovation (i3 UMR 9217 CNRS) Associate Member, LACI-IIAC (EHESS) Faculty Fellow, Nexa Center for Internet & Society

After Killing the Independence of Apache Software Foundation (ASF) Microsoft Steals Its Soul, Too
by Giacomo May 5, 2019

May 5, 2019

Ma tu guarda che cattivi! :-D Hanno fatto anche la cronologia! http://techrights.org/2019/04/29/asf-prisoner-of-microsoft/ No doubt there’s a lot more to come. We’re supposed to think it’s all just an act of “love” rather than infiltration or entryism. GitHub has been a perfect facilitator in that regard. Who’s next? Microsoft is at war. It’s turning its competition (to IIS), Apache, into a subservient actor. Where are antitrust authorities? Nowhere to be seen. Keep telling us that “Microsoft loves Linux,” ‘Linux’ Foundation. You’re well paid to spread this lie and keep regulators away.

"How robots became a scapegoat for the destruction of the working class"
by J.C. DE MARTIN May 5, 2019

May 5, 2019

*How robots became a scapegoat for the destruction of the working class* /Jeff Spross/ April 29, 2019 Should workers fear the robots? You don't have to look far to find lots of people shouting "yes." Magazines and newspapers blare headlines like "Welcoming our new robot overlords," "When your new co-worker is a robot," and "You will lose your job to a robot — and sooner than you think." Studies suggest anywhere from 9 percent to 47 percent of American jobs could be automated in the next few decades. In 2017, Bill Gates proposed a "robot tax" to address the problem. Andrew Yang, a long-shot contender for the Democratic presidential nomination, puts the threat of mass joblessness due to automation at the center of his campaign — and he wants a universal basic income to deal with it. But there's another narrative, too. Three papers in the last year — one by the Aspen Institute's Future of Work Initiative, one from the Roosevelt Institute and Duke University, and another in development from Roosevelt — suggest maybe the automation we're seeing now is little different from the technological advances we've seen in every other era. Instead, the problems of inequality, stagnation, and unemployment (which get blamed on the robots) are due to policy choices and power dynamics in the U.S. economy. Paper: "How Many People Live in Political Bubbles on Social Media? Evidence From Linked Survey and Twitter Data"

To investigate this question, we link a representative survey of Americans with data from respondents’ public Twitter accounts (/N/ = 1,496). We then quantify the ideological distributions of users’ online political and media environments by merging validated estimates of user ideology with the full set of accounts followed by our survey respondents (/N/ = 642,345) and the available tweets posted by those accounts (/N/ ~ 1.2 billion). We study the extent to which liberals and conservatives encounter counter-attitudinal messages in two distinct ways: (a) by the accounts they follow and (b) by the tweets they receive from those accounts, either directly or indirectly (via retweets). More than a third of respondents do not follow any media sources, but among those who do, we find a substantial amount of overlap (51%) in the ideological distributions of accounts followed by users on opposite ends of the political spectrum. At the same time, however, we find asymmetries in individuals’ willingness to venture into cross-cutting spaces, with conservatives more likely to follow media and political accounts classified as left-leaning than the reverse. Finally, we argue that such choices are likely tempered by online news watching behavior.
