NYT: "Google Fires 4 Workers Active in Labor Organizing"
by J.C. DE MARTIN Nov. 28, 2019

Nov. 28, 2019

*Google Fires 4 Workers Active in Labor Organizing** * /A company memo said they had been dismissed “for clear and repeated violations of our data security policies.” By Kate Conger and Daisuke Wakabayashi Nov. 25, 2019 S/AN FRANCISCO — Google on Monday fired four employees who had been active in labor organizing at the company, according to a memo that was seen by The New York Times. The memo, sent by Google’s security and investigations team, told employees that the company had dismissed four employees “for clear and repeated violations of our data security policies.” Jenn Kaiser, a Google spokeswoman, confirmed the firings but declined to elaborate. The dismissals are expected to exacerbate rocky relations between Google’s management and a vocal contingent of workers who have protested the company’s handling of sexual harassment, its treatment of contract employees, and its work with the Defense Department, federal border agencies and the Chinese government. Tensions have increased as Google has cracked down on what had long been a freewheeling work culture that encouraged employees to speak out. Google recently canceled a regular series of companywide meetings that allowed workers to pose questions to senior executives and began working with a consulting firm that has helped companies quell unionization efforts./ /[…] Continua qui: https://www.nytimes.com/2019/11/25/technology/google-fires-workers.html / /

Apple changes Crimea map to meet Russian demands
by gianluca quaglia Nov. 27, 2019

Nov. 27, 2019

Apple has complied with Russian demands to show the annexed Crimean peninsula as part of Russian territory on its apps. Russian forces annexed Crimea from Ukraine in March 2014, drawing international condemnation. The region, which has a Russian-speaking majority, is now shown as Russian territory on Apple Maps and its Weather app, when viewed from Russia. But the apps do not show it as part of any country when viewed elsewhere. continua qui https://www.bbc.com/news/technology-50573069

Vi inoltro le seguenti informazioni sperando di fare cosa gradita, Cari saluti a tutti, agata https://it.linkedin.com › agata-lo-tauro-6723257b *27 November 2019* - First ever video call between Space Station and Nobel Prize Laureates. - Follow live on 6 December 2019. - Astronauts Luca Parmitano and Jessica Meir will answer the call from space. *Nobel Prize laureates in physics and chemistry will talk to ESA astronaut Luca Parmitano and NASA astronaut Jessica Meir on 6 December as the Nobel Week festivities begin in Stockholm, Sweden.* Some of the brightest minds on Earth will talk to astronauts on the International Space Station about their perspective of the Universe, exoplanets and the challenges of spacewalking. During the live call from space, three 2019 Nobel Prize Laureates will discuss with the astronauts from the Nobel Prize Museum. ESA astronaut Christer Fuglesang will moderate the conversation between two of the Nobel Prize laureates in physics, Didier Queloz and Michel Mayor, and the Nobel Prize laureate in chemistry, Stanley Whittingham. Their discoveries are crucial to the work taking place on the International Space Station. This year the Nobel Prize in Physics rewards new understanding of the Universe’s structure and history, and the first discovery of a planet orbiting a solar-type star outside our Solar System. Cosmology and exoplanets are among the key themes investigated by ESA’s space science missions <https://www.esa.int/Science_Exploration/Space_Science/Exoplanet_and_cosmolo…>, with exoplanet hunter Cheops launching later this year. The Nobel Prize in Chemistry rewards the development of the powerful lithium ion battery. Jessica will recount first-hand how she helped install new lithium-ion batteries during her recent spacewalk to improve the Station’s power capacity following spacewalks with ESA astronauts Tim Peake and Thomas Pesquet on other spacewalks to upgrade to lithium-ion batteries. Luca is deeply involved in several challenging spacewalks to service the International Space Station’s largest scientific instrument. The Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS-02) is a sub-atomic particle detector that looks for dark matter, antimatter and measures cosmic rays – high energy particles that travel through space at close to the speed of light. The European astronaut has carried out two spacewalks to date to maintain AMS-02’s cooling system and ensure it can continue to provide more groundbreaking science to the scientific community for and its principal investigator, Nobel Prize-winning physicist Samuel Ting. All the Nobel Prize Laureates of 2019, who will visit the museum the same morning, are invited to the event. Members of the Nobel committees and general public will be part of the audience. Event programme Friday, 6 December 2019 15:00 - 15:20 CET (14:00 – 14:20 GMT) Participants: *International Space Station *

Preventing undesirable behavior of intelligent machines
by Giacomo Tesio Nov. 27, 2019

Nov. 27, 2019

Intelligent machines using machine learning algorithms are ubiquitous, ranging from simple data analysis and pattern recognition tools to complex systems that achieve superhuman performance on various tasks. Ensuring that they do not exhibit undesirable behavior—that they do not, for example, cause harm to humans—is therefore a pressing problem. We propose a general and flexible framework for designing machine learning algorithms. This framework simplifies the problem of specifying and regulating undesirable behavior. To show the viability of this framework, we used it to create machine learning algorithms that precluded the dangerous behavior caused by standard machine learning algorithms in our experiments. Our framework for designing machine learning algorithms simplifies the safe and responsible application of machine learning. [...] Let D, called the data, be the input to the ML algorithm. For example, in the classification setting, D is not a single labeled training example but rather all of the available labeled training examples. D is a random variable and the source of randomness in our subsequent statements regarding probability. An ML algorithm is a function a, where a(D) is the solution output by the algorithm when trained on data D. Let Θ be the set of all possible solutions that an ML algorithm could output. Our framework mathematically defines what an algorithm should do in a way that allows the user to directly place probabilistic constraints on the solution, a(D), returned by the algorithm. This differs from the standard ML approach wherein the user can only indirectly constrain a(D) by restricting or modifying the feasible set Θ or objective function f. Concretely, algorithms constructed using our framework are designed to satisfy constraints of the form Pr(g(a(D)) ≤ 0) ≥ 1 – δ, where g: Θ → ℝ defines a measure of undesirable behavior (as illustrated later by example) and δ ∈ [0, 1] limits the admissible probability of undesirable behavior. Using our framework for designing ML algorithms involves three steps: 1) Define the goal for the algorithm design process. [...] Note that this is in contrast to the standard ML approach: In the standard ML approach, Eq. 1 defines the goal of the algorithm, which is to produce a solution with a given set of properties, whereas in our framework, Eq. 2 defines the goal of the designer, which is to produce an algorithm with a given set of properties. [...] 2) Define the interface that the user will use. The user should have the freedom to specify one or more gi that capture the user’s own definition of undesirable behavior.[...] 3) Create the algorithm. [...] In practice, designers rarely produce algorithms that cannot be improved upon, which implies that they may only find approximate solutions to Eq. 2. Our framework allows for this by requiring a to satisfy only the probabilistic constraints while attempting to optimize f; we call such algorithms Seldonian. [...] The Seldonian algorithms and applications we present below are illustrations to show that it is possible and tractable to design Seldonian algorithms that can tackle important problems of interest. [...] We must therefore provide the user with a way to tell our algorithm the statistic to be bounded, without requiring the user to provide the value, g(θ), of the statistic for different solutions θ (see step 2 above). To achieve this (14), we allow the user to specify a sample statistic g^(θ,D), and we define g(θ) to be the expected value of this sample statistic: g(θ) = E[g^(θ,D)], where E denotes expected value.
