Microsoft Teams goes down as Europe starts working from home
by Giacomo Tesio March 16, 2020

March 16, 2020

https://www.grahamcluley.com/microsoft-teams-goes-down-as-europe-starts-wor… As millions of people across Europe choose to work remotely rather than head into the office in the wake of the Coronavirus pandemic, a widely-used communication and collaboration tool that allows workers to have video meetings, chat, and share files has gone down. Microsoft Teams posted on its Twitter support account that it was aware that users were experiencing problems using the service: We’re investigating messaging-related functionality problems within Microsoft Teams. Please refer to TM206544 in your admin center for further details. Obviously this is hardly the ideal time for Microsoft Teams to go down. Tweets from Microsoft Teams users As more and more businesses tell their workers not to travel into the office, and more schools switch to teaching pupils online, we’re likely to see more internet services stumble as they attempt to handle the sudden increased usage. And don’t forget – the teams at those companies providing the internet services are likely to have their own workers logging in remotely, trying to fix systems via the laptop on their dining room table. Strange days indeed. Northern Line train at 08.00 this morning. Driver has just reminded us: “All passengers to keep 6 feet apart”. pic.twitter.com/4yuPfk5Qs8 — Robert Howard (@ProfRobHoward) March 16, 2020 Update: Some users are now reporting that Microsoft Teams services have returned to normal. I sistemi distribuiti, invece, scalano quanto serve. Ricordiamocelo.

Google coronavirus website touted by Trump opens for two California counties - Reuters
by Alberto Cammozzo March 16, 2020

<https://www.reuters.com/article/us-health-coronavirus-google-usa/google-cor…> Technology News March 16, 2020 / 7:20 AM / Updated 5 hours ago Google coronavirus website touted by Trump opens for two California counties Paresh Dave 2 Min Read SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Google sister company Verily launched a website late on Sunday that invites adults in northern California to answer questions about their recent health and travel that could result in their getting a free coronavirus test. FILE PHOTO: The logo of Google is seen in Davos, Switzerland Januar 20, 2020. REUTERS/Arnd Wiegmann U.S. President Donald Trump had thanked Google on Friday for developing a website that he said would help people determine whether they needed a coronavirus test. Verily, a health care technology company owned by Alphabet Inc, said it worked with some employees at fellow Alphabet unit Google, to develop the new website, here The website states Verily is working “with the California governor’s office to direct high-risk individuals to newly-launched testing centers in San Mateo and Santa Clara” counties, sometimes by calling those users directly to set testing appointments. People showing symptoms of the flu-like virus are meant to seek medical care, rather than a test through Verily’s system, the company said. Verily did not respond to request for comment on user activity on the website in its first few hours. More than 162,000 people have been infected by the novel coronavirus and over 6,000 people have died from the disease it causes, COVID-19. Verily said people’s survey responses would be kept in an encrypted Google database, access to which is restricted and monitored. The data would be shared with healthcare authorities but would never be “joined with your data stored in Google products without your explicit permission,” Verily said. In addition, Verily said user-submitted data would be used for research purposes only with permission, though it may ask for that permission in the future. Making a Google account mandatory to use the website drew some criticism on social media. Verily engineer Ryan Seys responded to one of the critical posts by writing on Twitter that “we’re trying to make real impact out here in this time of crisis.”

-- =========================================== Full professor of Legal Informatics School of Law Coordinator of MSCA-ITN EJD LAST-JD-RIoE Scientific Director of Legal Blockchain Lab Director of the Summer School LEX Alma Mater Studiorum Università di Bologna C.I.R.S.F.I.D. http://www.cirsfid.unibo.it/ Palazzo Dal Monte Gaudenzi - Via Galliera, 3 I - 40121 BOLOGNA (ITALY) Tel +39 051 277217 Fax +39 051 260782 E-mail monica.palmirani(a)unibo.it

Government okays mass surveillance of Israelis' phones to curb coronavirus | The Times of Israel
by Alberto Cammozzo March 16, 2020

March 16, 2020

<https://www.timesofisrael.com/government-okays-mass-surveillance-of-israeli…> The government on Sunday approved a proposal to allow the Shin Bet security service to perform mass surveillance on Israelis’ phones without requiring a court order in an effort to curb the spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus, prompting major concerns of privacy and civil liberty violations. The measure will require final approval from the Knesset’s subcommittee on clandestine services before it can be put into action. The Prime Minister’s Office said the Shin Bet will be limited in what data it collects and who within the government will have access to it. In addition, under the proposal, the agency will only be able to use the information in the fight against the coronavirus, and the power is scheduled to end 30 days after it is granted by the Knesset subcommittee. A summary of this report can be downloaded here <https://drive.google.com/file/d/1Bu-QYturpwdrWPKdTTIzwAWoIkPBIOOK/view?usp=…>/ Background The mitigation measures enacted as part of the response to the unfolding SARS-CoV-2 pandemic are unprecedented in their breadth and societal burden. A major challenge in this situation is to quantitatively assess the impact of non-pharmaceutical interventions like mobility restrictions and social distancing, to better understand the ensuing reduction of mobility flows, individual mobility changes, and impact on contact patterns. Here we report preliminary results on tackling the above challenges by using de-identified, large-scale data from a location intelligence company, Cuebiq, that has instrumented smartphone apps with high-accuracy location-data collection software. We focus this initial analysis on Italy, where the COVID-19 epidemic has already triggered an unprecedented and escalating series of restrictions on travel and individual mobility of citizens.
