At the same time, these very tools have been used in a coordinated pro-government messaging campaign to turn public sentiment against the young activists and the movement of farmers they came together to support, often in clear violation of the guardrails social media companies claim to have erected to prevent violent incitement on their platforms. In a country where online hatred has tipped with chilling frequency into real-world pogroms targeting women and minorities, human rights advocates are warning that India is on the knife-edge of terrible violence, perhaps even the kind of genocidal bloodshed that social media aided and abetted against the Rohingya in Myanmar. Through it all, the giants of Silicon Valley have stayed conspicuously silent. Their famed devotion to free expression, as well as their newfound commitment to battling hate speech and conspiracy theories, is, in India, nowhere to be found. In its place is a growing and chilling complicity with Modi’s information war, a collaboration that is poised to be locked in under a draconian new digital media law that will make it illegal for tech companies to refuse to cooperate with government requests to take down offending material or to breach the privacy of tech users. Complicity in human rights abuses, it seems, is the price of retaining access to the largest market of digital media users outside China. After some early resistance from the company, Twitter accounts critical of the Modi government have disappeared in the hundreds without explanation; government officials engaging in bald incitement and overt hate speech on Twitter and Facebook have been permitted to continue in clear violation of the companies’ policies; and Delhi police boast that they are getting plenty of helpful cooperation from Google as they dig through the private communications of peaceful climate activists like Ravi. “The silence of these companies speaks volumes,” a digital rights activist told me, requesting anonymity out of fear of retribution. “They have to take a stand, and they have to do it now.” [...]

COVID-19: Test and Trace barely used check-in data from pubs and restaurants - with thousands not warned of infection risk

Data from hundreds of millions of check-ins by people who visited pubs, restaurants and hairdressers before lockdown was barely used by Test and Trace, according to a confidential report obtained by Sky News. The report admits that the failure of the £22bn service to use the data for alerts or contact tracing meant "thousands of people" were not warned they might be at risk of infection, "potentially leading to the spread of the virus." To make matters worse, when coronavirus data from venues was used, public health officials encouraged pubs and restaurants to contact customers directly - a breach of data protection law which could leave businesses facing legal action. The report says that lack of guidance from Test and Trace for local public health teams on how to use the data left businesses "being asked to, or volunteering, to contact customers and visitors". It adds: "This is a breach of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), and leaves businesses and venues open to potential legal challenge." Labour said the revelations exposed "a staggering level of dysfunctionality" inside Test and Trace - and hospitality groups reacted to the news with exasperation. La pagina riassuntiva sponsorizzata dalla FSF riportata sopra indica che la licenza da noi scelta, una CC BY-NC-SA, non è considerata «Free culture» in quanto non consente lo sfruttamento commerciale automatico: «Questa licenza non si qualifica come libera, poiché sussistono restrizioni sul pagamento in denaro delle copie». Dal nostro punto di vista, questo significa che la licenza è più libera, non meno libera! Non sempre le copie dei nostri libri o di opere da essi derivate saranno pagate in denaro, a volte saranno regalate, copiate, diffuse con altri metodi e per altre ragioni, scambiate con altri libri, con altri beni. Sono oggetti che circolano in un tessuto di relazioni, non beni di consumo, non (solo) merci. In questo come in molti altri casi le parole sono portatrici di un'intera visione del mondo. Automatizzare, sempre e comunque, mi sembra poco accorto. Certamente, se ci sono MOLTI autori (come accade nel software, spesso), il problema si complica, ma per libri e articoli è diverso. Insomma, sono io che non capisco l'esigenza di rendere commerciabile sempre e comunque. Non libero per uso commerciale secondo me significa "non libero SEMPRE e AUTOMATICAMENTE". Questo potrebbe essere il punto di vista dell'autore, di chi scrive, cioè attinge a piene mani da altri scritti ecc. cercando di fare riferimenti corretti (citazioni ecc., anche queste snaturate dall'impact factor accademico): la cultura funziona così, nessuno inventa nulla da zero. A mio parere, siamo costretti da un mondo sempre più legalista e cavilloso a scegliere come pubblicare (ma chi comprende fino in fondo le licenze? senza contare i margini interpretativi), per proteggerci dai continui abusi che comunque possono avvenire. ICANN Refuses to Accredit Pirate Bay Founder Peter Sunde Due to His ‘Background’

Peter Sunde is one of the original Pirate Bay founders, but in recent years he's mostly known for his role in various Internet-related startups. This includes domain registrar Sarek, for which Sunde tried to get ICANN accreditation. However, this request was denied, apparently due to Sunde's 'uncomfortable' background. [...] "I got some sort of semi-excuse regarding their claim that I lied on my application. They also said that they agreed it wasn’t fraud or similar really. So both of the points they made regarding the denial were not really the reason," Sunde clarifies. [...] “They basically admitted that they don’t like me. They’ve banned me for nothing else than my political views. This is typical discrimination. Considering I have no one to appeal to except them, it’s concerning, since they control the actual fucking center of the internet.” ICANN hasn’t commented publicly on the matter and the organization didn’t immediately respond to our request for further information. However, Sunde tells us that his ‘background’ is obviously the reason for the denial.
