Open Letter to the Free Software Movement

Dear hackers, first and foremost let us say that, as a collective and in the true uncompromising spirit of the teachings of Free/Libre Software/Society, we are capable of doing much better than what has just happened. Many of us work every day towards ensuring that everyone, regardless of their ethnicity, religion, gender, or neurotypicality, can participate, learn and share in our communities. We do not claim we are perfect, we sometimes make mistakes, some of them guided by systemic patterns and structures of power still entangling us, and some of them just due to our human nature . But we claim our right to learn every day how to become better at including all contributions and opinions, and this implies the ability of making mistakes without being destroyed by them. In the past years it has become clear that our movement and our ethos has transformed the world as we know it, with all the courage and all the mistakes considered; some of us rose to fame, some others wore masks as a protection from the regime of global espionage. In any case, many of us have sacrificed a great deal of comfort in life to change what needed to be changed. Let us not be mistaken about the cause that brought us here and let us not forget where the injustice comes from. Let us not forget what we, the people, have successfully built to resist the incredible pressure of corporate corruption and military regimes. Let us not forget that the quest for software freedom is still open and we may lose focus and positioning. Economic models based on proprietary knowledge and data extraction are the problem. Free/Libre Software, as an uncompromising philosophy and ethics focused on knowledge sharing and participation, is an important part of the solution. We need to honor the pride of the people of India who had the courage to stand up against the “free basics” campaign. We need to support the courage of all those defending network neutrality from attacks capable of putting under control the political integrity of entire continents. We need to facilitate the synergy between community networks in Oaxaca enabled by software written by activists all around the World. We need to defeat attempts to impose software patents as the “stronger” patent act in USA and the “unitary patent court” in EU. We need to empower the self-determination of entire populations in an age in which computing is as pervasive as our own social relationships. We need to reclaim our freedom from an ever-watching system of control and prediction that judges us from the algorithmic projection of our own intentions. We need to defend our freedom to be able to denounce all of this and speak freely by means that connect us, all over the world, without borders, intermediaries and censorship. We need to be conscious of where we are standing in this fight. As a trans-national movement, united by solidarity, awareness and ethics, we shall not negotiate the motivations we fight for. Queer Dada è una maratona di *scrittori* *queer* e *trans* provenienti da Brasile, Giordania, Stati Uniti, Olanda, ed Italia. Gli scrittori si alterneranno nelle loro performance da remoto possedendo, a turno, *Comm•e*, il robot della Double Robotics che la John Cabot ha acquistato in occasione della partecipazione del Ministro del Digitale di Taiwan, Audrey Tang, ad un precedente evento della serie DDD. Comm•e, pilotato in remoto da ciascun scrittore nella propria location, si muoverà nello spazio fisico dell’Aula Magna di John Cabot University a Roma, in compagnia soltanto di un essere umano, il musicista* System Hardware Abnormal* (SHA). In pieno rispetto della normativa anti-Covid 19, Comm•e volteggerà in perfetta sicurezza negli spazi vuoti dell’università, accompagnato dai suoni metallici live di SHA. L’evento rappresenta una proposta originale ed unica nel suo genere in un momento in cui fare arte e spettacolo dal vivo è diventato estremamente complicato. *Queer Dada* sarà visibile in *live streaming* sul canale *YouTube* della *John Cabot University* a partire dalle *18 *ora italiana. *Profili degli artisti:* *Drew Pham* (loro/lei) è un’artista trans americana di origini vietnamite. Figlia di rifugiati di guerra, ha servito l’esercito americano in Afghanistan nel 2011. Al suo rientro, ha lasciato la carriera militare per l’insegnamento della letteratura al Cuny Brooklyn College di New York. *Raphael Amahl Khoury* (loro/lui) è un artista trans originario della Giordania che vive fra Berlino e il Medio Oriente. E’ autore di numerose opere teatrali e documentarie a tema queer, fra cui ‘She He Me’, messo in scena al Kosmos Theatre di Vienna nel 2019. Khory è anche parte del Climate Change Theater Action che si occupa di teatro a temi ambientalisti. *Natalia Borges Polasso *(lei) è una ricercatrice e scrittrice brasiliana. Nel 2017 è stata inclusa in Bogota39, la lista dei nuovi talenti letterari latinoamericani. Il suo romanzo ‘Amora’ (2015), una collezione di brevi racconti d’amore solo al femminile, ha ricevuto consensi internazionali ed è stato tradotto in numerose lingue. *Simon(e) Van Sarloos* (loro/lei) è una scrittrice, filosofa e performer di base ad Amsterdam. Il suo resoconto queer e femminista del processo contro il politico olandese di estrema destra Geert Wilders ha suscitato numerose polemiche. Il suo scritto più recente, Playing Monogamy, è una satira della monogamia eteronormativa ed un inno ad abbandonare pretese di proprietà nel campo dell’amore e del sesso. *Allison Grimaldi-Dohanue *(lei) è poeta, scrittrice, e traduttrice di origini italo-americane. È autrice di *Body to Mineral* (Publication Studio Vancouver 2016) e di *On Endings* (Delere Press 2019). Pubblica su* Another Gaze, Prairie Schooner, Los Angeles Review of Books, Brooklyn Rail, BOMB, FlashArt, Nero *e altre riviste. Ha realizzato performance presso Gavin Brown Rome e Hyper Maremma in 2019. È stata scrittrice in residenza a New York Center for Book Arts e a Bread Loaf Conference e artista in residenza a Mass MoCA e MAMbo, Bologna. Francamente, anche se percepisco la terra piatta, non dubito delle affermazioni fatte da Galileo nel 1592. Nello stesso modo non ho ragione di dubitare di quello che scrive Wired. Ma sono contenta sia garantita la libertà di ritenere il contrario quanto a quello che scrive Wired. Precisato questo, la lettura del materiale che ha allegato Giacomo Tesio conferma le affermazioni pubblicate su Wired (da Simone Fontana): «*Nel passaggio più discusso della mail, Stallman arriva a definire “consenzienti” le ragazze minorenni sfruttate sessualmente dal miliardario statunitense, aggiungendo di ritenere “moralmente assurdo” che il concetto di stupro possa dipendere da “dettagli minori come la nazionalità o il fatto che la vittima avesse 18 o 17 anni”*.» E’ vero, come segnalato da Marco Calamari, che : «*At least Richard Stallman is not accused of raping anyone*». Alla luce delle osservazioni ricevute, posso quindi così modificare la mia affermazione «Molto francamente capisco che in Italia si possa avere una diversa percezione dello stesso problema (e non ne sono affatto felice), ma credo sia davvero importante ricordare che *simili affermazioni* non devono più essere fatte (e quando capitasse devono essere stigmatizzate), né nella vita reale, né on line, da nessuno. Nemmeno da un hacker!» 😉 Ricordo di non aver preso questa mattina posizione sull'attuale legittimazione di Stallman a presiedere la FSF, nè lo faccio adesso, considerato che non ho diritto di voto nell'elezione del Presidente della FSF. Visto il confronto che il tema ha qui suscitato, mi piacerebbe Lui stesso facesse una dichiarazione pubblica - spero - in merito all'erronea comprensione/diffusione delle Sue affermazioni. Facebook è diventato una giurisdizione? <https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2021/mar/23/facebook-leak-underscore…> Facebook leak underscores strategy to operate in repressive regimes Facebook users are permitted to praise mass murderers and “violent non-state actors” in certain situations, according to internal guidelines that underline how the tech corporation is striving to operate in repressive regimes. The leak also reveals that Facebook maintains a list of “recognised crimes” and instructs its moderators to distinguish between those and “crimes not recognised by FB” when applying the company’s rules. The list is designed to avoid giving succour to countries where criminal law is considered incompatible with basic human rights. “We only recognise crimes that cause physical, financial or mental injury to individual(s)” such as “theft, robbery and fraud, murder, vandalism [and] non-consensual sexual touching”, the guidelines say. Crimes not recognised by Facebook include “claims about sexuality”, “peaceful protests against governments” and “discussing historical events/controversial subjects such as religion”. Facebook argues this is the only way it can function in countries where the rule of law is shaky. But the revelation of its explicit decision to place itself above the law may cause friction with governments round the world. “One of the biggest problems is that Facebook has gone into every single country on the planet with no idea of the impact,” said Wendy Via, the co-founder and president of the US-based Global Project Against Hate and Extremism. She described Facebook, which was founded in the US, as having “little language capability and zero cultural competency”, adding: “You can’t build secret rules if you can’t understand the situation.” Even in the US, Facebook has struggled to deal with cultural changes. The documents give insight into how Facebook struggled to define and act against the far-right QAnon movement. Accounts associated with QAnon were banned across the platform in October 2020 after years of growing popularity and controversy. Defining QAnon as a “violence-inducing conspiracy network”, the company now bans non-state actors that “are organised under a name, sign mission statement or symbol; AND promote theories that attribute violent or dehumanising behaviour to people or organizations that have been debunked by credible sources; AND have advocated for incidents of real-world violence to draw attention to or redress the supposed harms promoted in those debunked theories”, according to the leaked guidelines for moderators, which date from December 2020.
