Inside Facebook's African Sweatshop

... These young Africans work for Sama, which calls itself an “ethical AI” outsourcing company and is headquartered in California. Sama says its mission is to provide people in places like Nairobi with “dignified digital work.” Its executives can often be heard saying that the best way to help poor countries is to “give work, not aid.” The company claims to have helped lift more than 50,000 people in the developing world out of poverty. ... Despite their importance to Facebook, the workers in this Nairobi office are among the lowest-paid workers for the platform anywhere in the world, with some of them taking home as little as $1.50 per hour, a TIME investigation found. The testimonies of Sama employees reveal a workplace culture characterized by mental trauma, intimidation, and alleged suppression of the right to unionize. The revelations raise serious questions about whether Facebook—which periodically sends its own employees to Nairobi to monitor Sama’s operations—is exploiting the very people upon whom it is depending to ensure its platform is safe in Ethiopia and across the continent. We are pleased to announce our upcoming workshop (postponed from December): *4th Workshop on Digital Humanism - Towards a Research and Innovation Roadmap* Date and time: *Thursday, March 3 and Friday, March 4, 2022 from 9:00 a.m. to 6.00 p.m. CET (UTC+1)* Digital Humanism aims to ensure that the development of digital technologies focuses on human needs and interests. Following the Vienna Manifesto on Digital Humanism, this workshop will take the initiative one step further towards realizing the vision. While many of the challenges of our digital age have become evident, the solutions to overcoming them are not. Digital technologies are still disrupting our society and putting in question decade-long achievements of democracy, humanism, and the age of Enlightenment. The workshop will address how to advance digital technologies towards realizing inclusion and democratic societies. The workshop will be held as a hybrid event, on-site at the TU Wien in Vienna, Austria and online. The end of free Google storage for education

In 2014, Google made a remarkable offer: anyone with a Google Apps for Education account in the US got unlimited storage for free. The logic was sound at the time. [...] The idea was that if you catch users when they are young, they're yours for life. The axiom had already been tested by both Apple and Microsoft, with creative types and workers in jobs with sensible shoes respectively. Google played on its own strengths as the first cloud-native platform for everyone. [...] Seven years later, Google has killed the deal. The tech giant announced the end of infinity in a blog post named, with magnificent chutzpah:, "More options for learning with Google Workspace for Education." [...] That announcement was a year ago, and gave existing users 18 months of grace, with new users denied the unlimited package from, well, now. Those with experience of academic deadlines won't be surprised that it has taken this long for lots of people to notice. Spanish court rejects opening code for automated public decisions

Civio, having noticed errors in its functioning, requested the code under the Transparency Law to analyse it. After a Government’s refusal, the Spanish Transparency Council also denied Civio’s access to the code on the grounds that it is protected by intellectual property rights. È vero che ci sono colossi che usano i nostri dati, ma ci sono operatori più piccoli e indipendenti, motori di ricerca meno famosi di Google, che non raccolgono i nostri dati personali. Chiamarsi fuori del tutto ci fa perdere le cose positive: come le partite di calcio viste sul palmare, per dire. Come la telemedicina, se sto male in alta montagna. Gli effetti negativi si possono provare a correggere. Solo se si sta dentro il nuovo mondo." Si tratta di una rete unica per interconnettere tutte le scuole: una prospettiva che ancora non è implementata, con conseguenze invalidanti per la digitalizzazione scuole. Una volta realizzata la rete UNIRE potrà essere completata da una piattaforma di cloud computing come base per ospitare tutti i dati e i sistemi applicativi utilizzati degli istituti, come ad esempio i sistemi per la didattica digitale integrata o i registri elettronici. La rete UNIRE consentirà la protezione dei dati di studentesse e studenti e delle informazioni che vengono veicolate tramite e tra le scuole. L’auspicio è che si possa procedere celermente. 15K teachers in Luxembourg start using Nextcloud

The Centre de gestion informatique de l’éducation, the IT resource management administration of the Ministry of National Education, Children and Youth in Luxembourg, is in charge of preparing and implementing the government’s policy in the areas of education, children and youth. In 2020, the CGIE launched a Nextcloud service to provide about 15000 teachers and staff members with a GDPR-compliant file storage. # Corona and GDPR Even before the Corona pandemic, Luxembourg had given all pupils and teachers access to the Microsoft 365 cloud, but on the condition that it not be used for documents relevant to data protection. For these documents, an on-premise hosted cloud was to be set up, which would enable the GDPR-compliant hosting of data. With the onset of the Corona pandemic, the pressure to build such a cloud quickly increased. The IT organization quickly decided on Nextcloud as the cloud software, and for the data storage they wanted to use the service of a Luxembourg provider for S3-compatible storage if possible. In addition, it was clear from the beginning that they needed Nextcloud Enterprise and a partner to set up and operate the Nextcloud service to ensure reliability and compliance. HKN GmbH convinced with its long experience in operating large Nextcloud installations. # Great results Today, Luxembourg provides its teachers with a fast, GDPR-compliant and productive cloud collaboration platform. The system has incredibly good performance, something that was an important focus as it was key for acceptance of the solution.
