The European executive is to unveil on Wednesday (11 May) its proposal to fight the online circulation of child sexual abuse material – CSAM in short. “Providers of hosting services and providers of interpersonal communication services that have received a detection order shall execute it by installing and operating technologies to detect” CSAM upon request by the competent judicial authority or independent administrative authority, the draft regulation states. Clearview AI agrees to permanent ban on selling facial recognition to private companies - The Verge

The agreement, filed in Illinois court today, would settle a 2020 American Civil Liberties Union lawsuit that alleged the company had built its business on facial recognition data taken without user consent. The agreement formalizes measures Clearview had already taken and shields the company from further ACLU suits under Illinois’ Biometric Information Privacy Act (BIPA). As part of the settlement, Clearview agrees to a permanent nationwide injunction restricting its sale (or free distribution) of access to a vast database of face photographs — many of which were originally scraped from social networks like Facebook. The injunction bars the company from dealing with most private businesses and individuals nationwide, including government employees who aren’t acting on behalf of their employers. It also can’t deal with any Illinois state or local government agency for five years. On top of attempting to remove any photographs of Illinois residents, it must maintain an opt-out program for residents who want to block any searches using their face or prevent any collection of their photographs. Clearview can still work with federal agencies and local police departments, as long as they’re outside Illinois. The ACLU hailed the settlement as a victory. “By requiring Clearview to comply with Illinois’ pathbreaking biometric privacy law not just in the state, but across the country, this settlement demonstrates that strong privacy laws can provide real protections against abuse,” said ACLU Speech, Privacy, and Technology Project deputy director Nathan Freed Wessler. “Clearview can no longer treat people’s unique biometric identifiers as an unrestricted source of profit. Other companies would be wise to take note, and other states should follow Illinois’ lead in enacting strong biometric privacy laws.” Illinois is so far one of the only states to enact a biometric privacy law, making it a hub for activists trying to fight privacy-eroding facial recognition tools. Meta, formerly Facebook, agreed to pay $650 million under a class action BIPA suit last year. Clearview already declared in 2020 that it would stop working with private companies, cutting off a list that at one point apparently included Bank of America, Macy’s, and Walmart. The company has focused instead on working with thousands of local law enforcement departments and federal agencies like the Justice Department, which have controversially used it for both general-purpose police work and unusual events like the January 6th, 2021 Capitol riot. These contracts are still allowed outside Illinois under the agreement, although Clearview will no longer offer free trial access to individual police officers without departments’ knowledge. But the practice faces opposition from some state and local governments, where lawmakers have restricted government use of all facial recognition databases — including Clearview’s.

L'idea che primitivo = strumento di potere, mentre evoluto = strumento democratico (alfabetizzato, ecc.) mi sembra sottintendere uno sviluppo lineare dal rozzo primitivo potere al sofisticato alfabetizzato. La storia della tecnica non è lineare, nè quella delle società umane. "matrix": la piattaforma F/OSS per "chat" e "IM" (a-la whatsapp), all'Università di Innsbruck

Mi hanno appena segnalato che, gia' da un po', l'università di Innsbruck ha lanciato un servizio "matrix" _ufficiale_. Questo è l'annuncio dell'azienda che ha supportato l'iniziativa: https://element.io/case-studies/university-of-innsbruck Sembrerebbe, inoltre, che siano diversi gli Atenei tedeschi che supportano "matrix" [1] come piattaforma di comunicazione [2] I dettagli di matrix (protocollo aperto), del fatto che nasce come piattaforma di instant-messaging _FEDERATA_ (e quindi, _NON_ centralizzata; pensato ad meccanismo molto simile alla posta elettronica), del fatto che supporti diversi client [PC/Desktop multipiattaforma, Android/iOS] e che --grazie alla sua "natura aperta", veda un fiorire di client diversi/alternativi [3].... ve li risparmio. Quello che vorrei sottolineare è che: 1 - ho scoperto "matrix", solo perche' uno studente del 1° anno di informatica di UniMI (uno studente che ho "pescato" e portato dentro a GARRLab), me ne ha parlato... [come alternativa a Telegram, che in GARRLab è il principale mezzo di comunicazione] e, insieme a lui ed a qualche suo collega, l'abbiamo attivato in GARRLab. Lo utilizziamo da un po', quindi... 2 - l'aver a disposizione un server matrix (che, per scelta nostra, attualmente NON è federato con il resto del mondo; di nuovo, pensatelo come un server di posta che gestisce solo la posta dei suoi utenti), mi ha permesso di fornire ai miei figli un "client" di comunicazione digitale... del tutto "isolato" rispetto al resto del mondo. Laddove, quindi, la "classe/scuola" spingeva [indirettamente...] per l'installazione di WhatsApp (e, di conseguenza, per una SIM)... ora sta accadendo il contrario: posso fornire degli account ai compagni di classe... e loro possono "chattare" (fra di loro) in modo assolutamente "safe". Il punto 2 è quello che piu' mi ha fatto riflettere (ma solo _DOPO_ averlo attuato). Chiudo segnalando che... se qualche Ateneo volesse "sperimentare" e, eventualmente, valutare di emulare i tedeschi... GARRLab è ben lieto di dare una mano.
