I think this is a positive side effect of the Creative Commons revolution (started just by Lessig). Now reuser have no excuses for not respecting the licenses of the images published on the web. Finding connected and complementary research inquiries among their diverse backgrounds, students represent all levels of study, are being trained in disciplines across the board, and come from universities all over the world to tackle issues related to the core of Berkman's research agenda, including law, technology, innovation, and knowledge; the relationships between Internet and civic activity; and the intersection of technology, learning, and development. Summer interns jump head first into the swirl of the Berkman universe, where they are deeply and substantively involved in our research projects and efforts. Becoming invaluable contributors to the Center's operation and success, interns conduct collaborative and independent research under the guidance of Berkman staff, fellows, and faculty. Specific roles, tasks, and experiences vary depending on Center needs and interns' skills; a select list of expected opportunities for Summer 2014 is below. Typically, the workload of each intern is primarily based under one project or suite of projects, with encouragement and flexibility to get involved in additional projects across the Center. In addition to joining research teams, summer interns participate in special lectures with Berkman Center faculty and fellows, engage each other through community experiences like weekly interns discussion hours, and attend Center-wide events and gatherings with members of the wider Berkman community. As well, each year interns establish new channels for fun and learning, such as organizing topical debates; establishing reading groups and book clubs; producing podcasts and videos; and hosting potlucks, cook-offs, and BBQs (fortunately for us, people share). The Berkman team is looking for rising second and third-year law students to help with research and analysis on privacy law and policy issues. Summer interns may conduct research and write memoranda on selected topics in law, draft data sharing agreements, aid in the development of new conceptual models for privacy legislation, summarize recent publications in professional journals, and attend lectures and events with the larger project team. The Sixth Annual ISHTIP Workshop 2014 The Instability of Intellectual Property Uppsala, Sweden JULY 2-4, 2014 http://www.ishtip.org/uppsala2014 Hosted by the Department of Archival Science, Library & Information Science and Museology & Heritage Studies (ALM), Uppsala University in collaboration with the Faculty of Law, Uppsala University. The International Society for the History and Theory of Intellectual Property (ISHTIP: http://www.ishtip.org/) invites to its sixth annual workshop. This time it will be held at Uppsala University and focus on the ways in which intellectual property moves and travels across disciplinary, legal, linguistic, and geopolitical borders. Instability can refer to the way intellectual property law seeks to pin down a legal regime for increasingly unstable works. Instability can refer to the interdisciplinarity of intellectual property scholarship, as it tries to navigate and expand across and beyond disciplinary traditions. Instability can refer to the many processes of cultural and legal translation and transculturation involved in flows of culture. We encourage a broad variety of historical and/or contemporary topics that explore interdisciplinary and international aspects of intellectual property, engaging with the diversity and plurality of legal and linguistic traditions. We are particularly interested in receiving contributions that deploy a self-reflexive epistemological outlook on the study of intellectual property. Possible topics include but are not limited to: * translation and appropriation * perceptions of instability in different times and places and strategies deployed for dealing with that instability * transnationalism * legal borrowing * comparative legal and cultural studies * hybridity (in both cultural and legal terms, for instance scientific property) * processes of commodification and conversion * the interplay between international, regional and local law/culture * IP from below * ”centre-periphery” relations * interchanges, translations and borrowings between various intellectual properties and jurisdictions * Submissions of paper proposals should be made to ishtip2014(a)gmail.com<mailto:ishtip2014@gmail.com> and include a 300 word abstract, a one paragraph author bio and two page CV. GNI Report Finds Google, Microsoft, and Yahoo Compliant with Free Expression and Privacy Principles Date: Wednesday, January 8, 2014 - 09:00 WASHINGTON, DC---The Global Network Initiative today released a public report <http://globalnetworkinitiative.org/sites/default/files/GNI%20Assessments%20…>on the independent assessments of founding companies Google, Microsoft, and Yahoo. The assessments looked at cases of government requests implicating the rights of Internet users, and found that each company is making a good faith effort to implement GNI's Principles on Freedom of Expression and Privacy, and to improve over time. "These independent assessments---the first of their kind---present a major step forward on human rights accountability in the technology sector," said GNI Board Chair Jermyn Brooks. "They demonstrated in the many specific cases examined how companies, applying the GNI Principles, have in fact been able to limit the removal of content and the release of personal data as a result of government requests," he continued. The assessments focused on products and services that in the company's view posed the most salient risks to freedom of expression and privacy---search, email, and photo and video sharing services---with cases identified through a process that included consultation with GNI's non-company members. The report presents information in aggregate or anonymized form in order to allow public disclosure of how the companies review and respond to government requests without disclosing confidential information. The report also details examples of the recommendations made by the assessors to one or more companies. The process did not and cannot determine whether the companies have acted appropriately with respect to each of the many thousands of requests received each year from governments. An exclusive look inside their year from hell---and why the Internet will never be the same. On June 6, 2013, Washington Post reporters called the communications departments of Apple, Facebook, Google, Yahoo, and other Internet companies. The day before, a report in the British newspaper The Guardian had shocked Americans with evidence that the telecommunications giant Verizon had voluntarily handed a database of every call made on its network to the National Security Agency. The piece was by reporter Glenn Greenwald, and the information came from Edward Snowden, a 29-year-old IT consultant who had left the US with hundreds of thousands of documents detailing the NSA's secret procedures. Greenwald was the first but not the only journalist that Snowden reached out to. The Post's Barton Gellman had also connected with him. Now, collaborating with documentary filmmaker and Snowden confidante Laura Poitras, he was going to extend the story to Silicon Valley. Gellman wanted to be the first to expose a top-secret NSA program called Prism. Snowden's files indicated that some of the biggest companies on the web had granted the NSA and FBI direct access to their servers, giving the agencies the ability to grab a person's audio, video, photos, emails, and documents. The government urged Gellman not to identify the firms involved, but Gellman thought it was important. "Naming those companies is what would make it real to Americans," he says. Se è evidente che tali pratiche sono sempre più necessarie per la legittimazione delle politiche e la creazione di consenso in democrazie dall'equilibrio sempre più precario, è altrettanto vero che resta fondamentale evitare che diventino finestre occasionali di promozione politica. Partendo da una ricca esperienza in prima persona su numerose delle iniziative promosse dal Governo, gli interventi di *Donatella Solda*, esperta di diritto dell'informazione, e *Damien Lanfrey*, esperto di /public engagement/, rifletteranno sullo stato dell'arte, esporranno diversi spunti di riflessioni a partire dalle diverse iniziative in questione e proporranno alcune chiavi di lettura per suggerire soluzioni ai dilemmi e le "spirali viziose" di cui spesso la democrazia online soffre. Collocando la partecipazione online all'interno di un percorso evolutivo, si tenterà inoltre di tracciare un *modello strutturato di analisi per la e-participation*, in grado di andare oltre la costruzione di software e spazi di partecipazione ineccepibili o patti partecipativi non sempre sostenibili, per includere variabili cruciali all'intersezione tra rigidità dell'azione di Governo e fluidità dell'agire sociale. La creazione di modelli strutturati per la verifica ex ante o in itinere delle posizioni di cittadini e /stakeholder/, per focalizzare attenzione pubblica e generare consapevolezza verso i temi centrali delle politiche e per informare i cittadini ed alzare la qualità del dibattito, qualificando una generale domanda per politiche pubbliche trasparenti, adeguatamente strutturate e partecipate, sono infatti obiettivi da difendere per evitare un impoverimento della partecipazione online.
