Facebook under criminal investigation over data sharing with tech firms - report | Technology | The Guardian
by Alberto Cammozzo March 14, 2019

March 14, 2019

<https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2019/mar/13/facebook-data-sharing-in…> [..] The criminal investigation adds to a laundry list of probes since the Cambridge Analytica revelations one year ago placed a spotlight on the company’s data and privacy practices. Investigations by the Federal Trade Commission, the justice department and the Securities and Exchange Commission have all been previously reported. Facebook was also sued by Washington DC in late December for allowing Cambridge Analytica to obtain personal data of users without permission. The data sharing deals were reported by the New York Times in June and December of last year. Facebook gave companies including Netflix, Spotify, Microsoft, Sony and Amazon the ability to access user data long after it had stopped sharing data with most third-parties, the Times revealed. At the time, the company strongly disputed that these data partnerships violated users’ privacy or the company’s 2012 settlement with the FTC.

Researchers find trapdoor in SwissVote election system
by Giacomo Tesio March 12, 2019

March 12, 2019

A team of researchers have examined the source code published as part of the SwissPost e-voting system, provided by Scytl, and discovered a cryptographic trapdoor. If exploited, researchers say this could allow insiders who ran or implemented the election system to modify votes undetected. [...] In the SwissPost system, encrypted electronic votes need to be 'shuffled' to protect individual vote privacy. The authority who conducts the shuffle is supposed to provide a mathematical proof that no votes have been changed. This allows the election result to be verified. But the trapdoor found in this code allows an authority to produce a proof that seems to verify correctly actually alters votes. "The existence of a trapdoor is worrying," Ms Lewis said. "While nothing in our analysis suggests that this problem was introduced deliberately, its mere presence raises serious questions about the rest of the code." https://techxplore.com/news/2019-03-trapdoor-swissvote-election.html

Tim Berners-Lee on 30 years of the web: 'If we dream a little, we can get the web we want' | Technology | The Guardian
by Alberto Cammozzo March 12, 2019

March 12, 2019

<https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2019/mar/12/tim-berners-lee-on-30-ye…> [...] Thirty years on, and Berners-Lee’s invention has more than justified the lofty goals implied by its name. But with that scale has come a host of troubles, ones that he could never have predicted when he was building a system for sharing data about physics experiments. Some are simple enough. “Every time I hear that somebody has managed to acquire the [domain] name of their new enterprise for $50,000 (£38,500) instead of $500, I sigh, and feel that money’s not going to a good cause,” Berners-Lee tells me when we speak on the eve of the anniversary. It is a minor regret, but one he has had for years about the way he decided to “bootstrap” the web up to something that could handle a lot of users very quickly: by building on the pre-existing service for assigning internet addresses, the domain name system (DNS), he gave up the chance to build something better. “You wanted a name for your website, you’d go and ask [American computer scientist] Jon Postel, you know, back in the day, and he would give you a name. “At the time that seemed like a good idea, but it relied on it being managed benevolently.” Today, that benevolent management is no longer something that can be assumed. “There are plenty of domain names to go around, but the way people have invested, in buying up domains that they think entrepreneurs or organisations will use – even trying to build AI that would guess what names people will want for their organisations, grabbing the domain name and then selling it to them for a ridiculous amount of money – that’s a breakage.” It sounds minor, but the problems with DNS can stand in for a whole host of difficulties the web has faced as it has grown. A quick fix, built to let something scale up rapidly, that turns out to provide perverse incentives once it is used by millions of people and is so embedded that it is nearly impossible to change course. But nearly impossible is not actually impossible. That is the thrust of the message Berners-Lee is aiming to spread. Every year, on the anniversary of his creation, he publishes an open letter on his vision for the future of the web. This year’s letter, given the importance of the anniversary, is broader in scope than most – and expresses a rare level of concern about the direction in which the web is moving. [...]

Making 37.78TB of research data available!
by Giacomo Tesio March 12, 2019

March 12, 2019

We've designed a distributed system for sharing enormous datasets - for researchers, by researchers. The result is a scalable, secure, and fault-tolerant repository for data, with blazing fast download speeds. http://academictorrents.com/ This service is designed to facilitate storage of all the data used in research, including datasets as well as publications. There are many advantages of using bittorrent technology to disseminate this work. Torrent technology allows a group of editors to "seed" their own peer-reviewed published articles with just a torrent client. Each editor can have part or all of the papers stored on their desktops and have a torrent tracker to coordinate the delivery of papers without a dedicated server. One aim of this site is to create the infrastructure to allow open access journals to operate at low cost. By facilitating file transfers, the journal can focus on its core mission of providing world class research. After peer review the paper can be indexed on this site and disseminated throughout our system. http://academictorrents.com/about.php Credo possa interessare molti ricercatori sulla ML. Ottime scelte tecnologiche, orientate alla semplicità e alla massima distribuzione. Rimane "centralizzato" solo l'aggiornamento dell'indice dei materiali distribuiti, i materiali stessi sono distribuiti via Torrent e l'indice stesso viene ridondato scaricandolo come RSS. Giovanotti svegli, insomma. :-D Giacomo

Facebook backtracks after removing Warren ads calling for Facebook breakup - POLITICO
by Alberto Cammozzo March 12, 2019

March 12, 2019

FB stessa dimostra che la Warren ha ottimi motivi per volerne la frammentazione. <https://www.politico.com/story/2019/03/11/facebook-removes-elizabeth-warren…> Facebook removed several ads placed by Sen. Elizabeth Warren’s presidential campaign that called for the breakup of Facebook and other tech giants. But the social network later reversed course after POLITICO reported on the takedown, with the company saying it wanted to allow for "robust debate." The ads, which had identical images and text, touted Warren's recently announced plan to unwind "anti-competitive" tech mergers, including Facebook’s acquisition of WhatsApp and Instagram. “Three companies have vast power over our economy and our democracy. Facebook, Amazon, and Google," read the ads, which Warren's campaign had placed Friday. "We all use them. But in their rise to power, they’ve bulldozed competition, used our private information for profit, and tilted the playing field in their favor.” A message on the three ads said: “This ad was taken down because it goes against Facebook's advertising policies.” [...]
