*Open Letter: Stop the Uncritical Adoption of AI Technologies in Academia* 27 June 2025 /https://openletter.earth/open-letter-stop-the-uncritical-adoption-of-ai-technologies-in-academia-b65bba1e/ Dear Universities of The Netherlands, Dutch Universities of Applied Sciences, and Respective Executive Boards, With this letter we take a principled stand against the proliferation of so-called 'AI' technologies in universities. As an educational institution, we cannot condone the uncritical use of AI by students, faculty, or leadership. We also call for reconsidering any direct financial relationships between Dutch universities and AI companies. The unfettered introduction of AI technology leads to contravention of the spirit of the EU Al act. It undermines our basic pedagogical values and the principles of scientific integrity. It prevents us from maintaining our standards of independence and transparency. And most concerning, AI use has been shown to hinder learning and deskill critical thought. As academics, and especially as university-level educators, we have the responsibility to educate our students, not to rubber stamp degrees without any relationship to university-level skills. Our duty as educators is the cultivation of critical thinking and intellectual honesty, and it is not our role either to police or promote cheating, nor to normalise our students' and mentees' avoidance of deep thought. Universities are about engaging deeply with the subject matter. The goal of academic training is not to solve problems as efficiently and quickly as possible, but to develop skills for identifying and dealing with novel problems, which have never been solved before. We expect students to be given space and time to form their own deeply considered opinions informed by our expertise and nurtured by our educational spaces. Such spaces must be protected from industry advertising, and our funding must not be misspent on profit-making companies, which offer little in return and actively deskill our students. Even the term 'Artificial Intelligence' itself (which scientifically refers to a field of academic study) is widely misused, with conceptual unclarity coopted to advance industry agendas and undermine scholarly discussions. It is our task to demystify and to challenge 'AI' in our teaching, research and in our engagement with society. We must protect and cultivate the ecosystem of human knowledge. AI models can mimic the appearance of scholarly work, but they are (by construction) unconcerned with truth—the result is a torrential outpouring of unchecked but convincing-sounding "information". At best, such output is accidentally true, but generally citationless, divorced from human reasoning and the web of scholarship that it steals from. At worst, it is confidently wrong. Both outcomes are dangerous to the ecosystem. Overhyped 'AI' technologies, such as chatbots, large language models, and related products, are just that: products that the technology industry, just like the tobacco and petroleum industries, pump out for profit and in contradiction to the values of ecological sustainability, human dignity, pedagogical safeguarding, data privacy, scientific integrity, and democracy. These 'AI' products are materially and psychologically detrimental to our students' ability to write and think for themselves, existing instead for the benefit of investors and multinational companies. As a marketing strategy to introduce such tools in the classroom, companies falsely claim that students are lazy or lack writing skills. We condemn those claims and reassert students’ agency vis-à-vis corporate control. We have been here before with tobacco, petroleum, and many other harmful industries who do not have our interests at heart and who are indifferent to the academic progress of our students and to the integrity of our scholarly processes. We call upon you to: • *Resist the introduction of AI in our own software* systems, from Microsoft to OpenAI to Apple. It is not in our interests to let our processes be corrupted and give away our data to be used to train models that are not only useless to us, but also harmful. • *Ban AI use in the classroom* for student assignments, in the same way we ban essay mills and other forms of plagiarism. Students must be protected from de-skilling and allowed space and time to perform their assignments themselves. • *Cease normalising the AI hype* and the lies which are prevalent in the technology industry's framing of these technologies. The technologies do not have the advertised capacities and their adoption puts students and academics at risk of violating ethical, legal, scholarly, and scientific standards of reliability, sustainability, and safety. • *Fortify our academic freedom* as university staff to enforce these principles and standards in our classrooms and our research as well as on the computer systems we are obliged to use as part of our work. We as academics have the right to our own spaces. • *Sustain critical thinking on AI* and promote critical engagement with technology on a firm academic footing. Scholarly discussion must be free from the conflicts of interest caused by industry funding, and reasoned resistance must always be an option. Inoltre, è una persona colta. O dovrebbe esserlo: ma si manifesta come ingiustificabile sostenitore della neutralità della tecnologia, poiché sembra pensare che finora ha "usato", per i suoi fini, la "sua" tecnologia, che considera la sua bottega e che ora gli viene invasa. Mi pare ingiustificabilmente ingenuo nell'individuare un prima (quando aveva la "sua" bottega, operata dalle multinazionali tossiche) e un dopo, con la pagina bianca insozzata dai suggerimenti non richiesti. In sintesi, non è giustificabile perché è una persona ricca (di certo a livello culturale e relazionale). Fosse invece persona deprivata in un contesto di deprivazione, per me potrebbe diventare più giustificabile. Perché da chi non ha risorse non ci si può attendere la stessa capacità di critica e scelta rispetto a chi le risorse le ha. Se ho fame, qualsiasi cosa può andar bene per sopravvivere: anche il cibo spazzatura, anche gli scarti. Con l'obiettivo di non soffrire più la fame e poter scegliere. Se vivo nell'abbondanza, anche culturale, e continuo a ingollare robaccia, non sono giustificabile. Traslando la metafora: se vivo nell'Europa contemporanea e non soffro un contesto di deprivazione culturale, relazionale, economica... non è giustificabile il fatto di aver accettato supinamente il software proprietario. Se l'ho accettato e non me ne sono accorto è mia disattenzione non triviale (affrontabile, se viene riconosciuto l'inghippo), che diventa problema sociale e non solo tecnico nella misura in cui le persone intorno a me stanno su "X" (segnaposto per: "tecnologia di massa non interoperabile") e quindi mi risulta disabilitante non volerci/poterci stare. Attenuante: AFAIK Serra non sta sui social. Forse per snobismo (mi è capitato spesso di subire questa accusa: "sei snob, ti puoi permettere di non stare sui social". eh. mah. anche no. ci tengo alla salute, ecco). Non saprei; ma ritengo che questa assenza dal contesto social, a livello percettivo, collima con l'auto-rappresentazione della pagina bianca/bottega garantita delle BigTech. Non se n'è accorto: un po' tirato, ma non impossibile. D'altra parte, i limiti di tolleranza della tossicità tecnica sono molto variabili: per qualcun è stato il green pass; per me sono state la diffusione delle telecamere di videosorveglianza all'inizio degli anni Novanta; per altr... Musk su X (che spinge, pochi per la verità, a ripiegare su Instagram, come fosse "meglio"), o ancora il cerchiolino di meta su WhatsApp (che, non si sa come, fino a quel momento hanno creduto fosse "casa loro", e gratuita). Ogni storia individuale che s'interseca nell'ambiente sociotecnico contiene elementi contestuali che è importante rilevare. Altrimenti potrebbe sembrare che un gruppo WhatsApp per organizzarsi fra migranti durante viaggi lunghi, pericolosi e potenzialmente letali sia identico a un gruppo WhatsApp di, poniamo, attivist che vivono in Europa con documenti regolari e "usano" uno strumento che ritengono a torto "la loro bottega" per diffondere la consapevolezza che l'oppressione animale è alla base di altre oppressioni. Non si è accorto che nessuno ha chiesto il suo parere per sviluppare Windows e Word (e Android/iOS. o non usa lo smartphone? in tal caso, chapeau), ma gli andavano bene; non si è accorto che ora la sua pagina bianca è sul cloud di M$365 (forse, probabilmente), ma anche questo gli andava bene: eppure rispetto alla macchina da scrivere sconnessa dalla rete che ha certamente usato, quelle tecnologie hanno ridotto le sue abilità e il uso potere di intervento nel mondo. I "suggerimenti" invece hanno rotto l'argine: ORA si sente invaso e quindi disabilitato, perché NON PUO' disabilitare quella funziona non richiesta (manco le altre, ma le altre non le ha percepite come disabilitanti) le narrazioni sui progressi tecnologici tendono a spacciare le nuove funzionalità come avanzamenti abilitanti, mentre è proprio il contrario. Anche per questo è difficile non farsi risucchiare nella loro zona di attrazione, vedi il caso della cosiddetta IA. per via dei contesti talvolta incomparabili, suggerire alternative di sw libero non è necessariamente abilitante. Intanto perché il sw libero non è tutto uguale; e poi, a livello relazionale, sappiamo bene cosa succede quando ci chiedono di "risolvere" un problema tecnico (es.: "ho un virus nel computer!"), proponiamo una distro GNU/Linux e poi ci ritroviamo persone che diventano dipendenti dalla nostra "expertise", con il corollario di co-dipendenza che genera. certamente la questione è sempre "la gggente"; epperò, non dipende solo da loro, perché le tossicità sono molteplici, tutte anche sistemiche e perché quando si svolge un ruolo in un determinato contesto è difficile vedere il quadro più generale, o considerare altri punti di vista. La persona abituata a organizzare i propri file fatica a rendersi conto che, oggigiorno, la stragrande maggioranza delle persone non ha idea di dove siano i "propri" file, e, spesso, non sa nemmeno che esistono. Ma anche la consapevolezza che porta a un eventuale rifiuto di massa di una tecnologia tossica non protegge dall'eterno ritorno. Ad esempio, un referendum s'è espresso contro la tecnologia nucleare: eppure oggi per sostenere l'IA e altre nocive tecnologie "per tutt" ecc ecc i decisori fan finta che non sia così, e che il nucleare sia l'unica opzione. o volete il carbone? false alternative... Le narrazioni disabilitanti (non ho più la mia bottega! buuu!) deprimono perché propongono forme di consapevolezza depotenzianti, secondo le quali le persone sono sempre più inermi. Invece secondo me sono possibili salti di consapevolezza potenziante e quindi liberazione di tempo/energie necessari (ma non sufficienti) a cambiare comportamenti tossici. A una condizione: i "nuovi" comportamenti da adottare devono generare una quantità sufficiente di piacere/benessere, in particolare sotto forma di sensazione/acquisizione di potere: potere di sottrarre a un controllo indesiderato, potere di insegnare a persone care come sottrarsi; potere di fare cose che si ritenevano appannaggio di persone esperte; potere di scegliere; potersi sentire persone più forti e indipendenti, per sé e per gli altri. le tecnologie tossiche di massa succhiano tempo/energie da umani e non umani per costruire megamacchine sociotecniche in cui tutto si tiene e nessun può sottrarsi, pena l'esclusione. tecnologie altre dovrebbero offrire maggior potere a individui (e gruppi associati di individui), valorizzando il cambiamento dei contesti e le procedure per attivare quei cambiamenti, per cui ad esempio una persona prima succube dell'"innovazione" cambia comportamenti, insieme ad altre persone fidate, fino a sentirsi abbastanza forte per sottrarsi e proporre altro nel suo contesto; il tutto senza fissarsi troppo su parametri che in definitiva son poco chiari e ancor meno condivisi (cos'è open? free, etico, sostenibile, ecc. ecc.) ciao k. > > [...] > > Ciao, 380° > -- "tecnologie conviviali - https://eleuthera.it/tc" "pedagogia hacker - https://circex.org https://eleuthera.it/ph" "tecnologie appropriate - https://eudema.net"

Da meditare concetto per concetto, "alfabetizzazione digitale" è la risposta ma non importa il nome. * (il digitale) incide sempre più precocemente sulla crescita affettiva e relazionale dei bambini. * l’educazione digitale inizia dai corsi di accompagnamento alla nascita * il digitale ... è un linguaggio, una cultura, una modalità relazionale che i più piccoli apprendono osservando gli adulti. eccetera eccetera, senza abbiccì tutto il resto è utopia, come costruire case senza fondamenta. MAMMOth - Valutazione del progetto

Buongiorno, Sono assegnista di ricerca post-doc in Sociologia presso l'Università di Bologna e attualmente partecipo al progetto europeo MAMMOth “Multi-Attribute, Multimodal Bias Mitigation in AI Systems” (https://cordis.europa.eu/project/id/101070285) Il progetto MAMMOth (https://mammoth-ai.eu/) mira ad affrontare le discriminazioni riprodotte e amplificate dai sistemi di IA con un approccio multidisciplinare, combinando soluzioni di mitigazione dei bias sviluppate da informatici ed esperti di IA, con un approccio socialmente consapevole. Il principale risultato del progetto è il toolkit MAI-BIAS (https://github.com/mammoth-eu/mammoth-toolkit-releases) un kit di strumenti che supporta gli sviluppatori di IA nell'esplorazione dei bias e fornisce raccomandazioni per la creazione di sistemi più equi. Il progetto sta testando le soluzioni sviluppate attraverso progetti pilota in tre settori di interesse: a) applicazioni finanziarie, b) sistemi di verifica dell'identità e c) citazioni e collaborazioni accademiche. Attualmente ci stiamo avvicinando alla fase finale del progetto e stiamo cercando persone esperte o che fanno ricerca sul tema delle discriminazioni riprodotte dai sistemi di IA da diverse prospettive (informatica, sociologia, etica, ecc.), interessate a partecipare ad una sessione di valutazione dei risultati del progetto. Al momento abbiamo programmato due sessioni di valutazione online nelle seguenti date: * Martedì 1° luglio, 15-17 CEST; * Martedì 8 luglio, 9-11 CEST. Secondo l’OCSE, il 17% dei bambini prova ansia o nervosismo quando è lontano dagli schermi. Non è solo una questione di tempo online, ma del valore emotivo che la tecnologia assume nella quotidianità. This talk is titled 'The role of the University is to resist AI', and takes as its text Ivan Illich's 'Tools for Conviviality' <https://archive.org/details/illich-conviviality>. AI's impact on higher education come primarily from historical forces, not from its claim to be sci-fi tech from the future. Society can't throw up its hands in shock as students outsource their thinking to simulation machines when fifty years of neoliberalism has masticated education into something homogenised, metricised and machinic. Meanwhile, so-called Ed Tech has claimed for decades that learning is informational rather than relational and ripe for technical disruption. When Illich refers to tools, he's taking this broader view. As he writes: "I use the term 'tool' broadly enough to include not only simple hardware such as drills, pots, syringes, brooms, building elements, or motors, and not just large machines like cars or power stations; I also include among tools productive institutions such as factories that produce tangible commodities like corn flakes or electric current, and productive systems for intangible commodities such as those which produce 'education,' 'health,' 'knowledge,' or 'decisions'."
