hacking in time of SARS-CoV-2: open hardware projects working to solve COVID-19
by Giovanni Biscuolo April 5, 2020

April 5, 2020

Opentrons' open source lab automation platform is comprised of a suite of open source hardware, verified labware, consumables, reagents, and workstations. [...] can "automate up to 2,400 tests per day within days of an order being placed." It plans to ramp up to 1 million tested samples by July 1. [...] Chai's Open qPCR device uses polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to rapidly test swabs from surfaces (e.g., door handles and elevator buttons) to see if the novel coronavirus is present. [...] Data from the Chai Open qPCR can enable public health, civic, and business leaders to make more informed decisions about cleaning, mitigation, facility closures, contract tracing, and testing. [...] OpenPCR is a PCR testing device kit from Josh Perfetto and Jessie Ho, the creators behind the Chai Open qPCR. This is more of a DIY open source device than their previous project, but it has the same use case: using environmental testing to identify the coronavirus in the field. As the project page states, "traditional real-time PCR machines capable of detecting these pathogens typically cost upwards of $30,000 US dollars and are not suitable for field usage." Because OpenPCR is a kit users build and is shared under a GPLv3.0 license, the device aims to democratize access to molecular diagnostics. [...] The Open Lung Low Resource Ventilator is a quick-deployment ventilator that utilizes a bag valve mask (BVM), also known as an Ambu-bag, as a core component. Ambu-bags are mass-produced, certified, small, mechanically simple, and adaptable to both invasive tubing and masks. The OPEN LUNG ventilator will use micro-electronics to sense and control air pressure and flow, with the goal to enable semi-autonomous operation. This early-stage project boasts a large team with hundreds of contributors, led by: Colin Keogh, David Pollard, Connall Laverty, and Gui Calavanti. It is shared under a GPLv3.0 license. [...] The Pandemic Ventilator is a DIY ventilator prototype. Like the RepRap project, it uses commonly available hardware components in its design. The project was uploaded by user Panvent to Instructables more than 10 years ago, and there are six major steps to producing it. The project is shared under a CC BY-NC-SA license. [...] These projects are just a fraction of the activity happening in the open hardware space to solve or treat COVID-19. In researching this article, I discovered other projects worth exploring, such as: [...] [1] https://www.3dprintingmedia.network/covid-19-3d-printed-valve-for-reanimati… [2] https://repair.org/medical «Repair monopolies, created by equipment manufacturers, are driving health care costs up and patient care down.» -- Giovanni Biscuolo Xelera IT Infrastructures

by Giovanni Biscuolo April 4, 2020

April 4, 2020

--8<---------------cut here---------------start------------->8--- The devices, called simply the “Proof of Health” wearables, aim to provide contact tracing — in other words, monitoring the potential spread of the coronavirus from person-to-person — at the level of a local workplace facility. The intention is to give employers a way to hopefully maintain a pulse on any possible transmission among their workforces and provide them with the ability to hopefully curtail any local spread before it becomes an outsized risk. [...] That’s designed for internal use within an organization for now, but Cheney tells me he’s working now to see if there might be a way to collaborate with WHO or other external health organizations to potentially leverage the information for tracing across enterprises and populations, too. [...] Many have proposed technology-based solutions for contact tracing, including leveraging existing data gathered by smartphones and consumer applications to chart transmission. But those efforts also have considerable privacy implications, and require use of a smartphone — something Cheney says isn’t really viable for accurate workplace tracking in high-traffic environments. By creating a dedicated wearable, Cheney says that Estimote can help employers avoid doing something “invasive” with their workforce, since it’s instead tied to a fit-for-purpose device with data shared only with their employers, and it’s in a form factor they can remove and have some control over. Mobile devices also can’t do nearly as fine-grained tracking with indoor environments as dedicated hardware can manage, he says. --8<---------------cut here---------------end--------------->8--- L'App su smartphone ha considerevoli implicazioni di privacy ed è troppo invasiva, questo invece! :-D https://estimote.com/wearable/ (prego guardare le figurine) --8<---------------cut here---------------start------------->8--- The contact tracing dashboard notifies all exposed team members and protects your entire workforce Team members who work together use small wireless devices which automatically registers their close interactions In the event of a symptomatic employee, companies can quickly locate other exposed team members who are at risk Wirelessly chargeable with programmable panic button and LED status indicators Button that enables employees to log their health status in real-time --8<---------------cut here---------------end--------------->8--- Non è l'unico sul mercato.
by Luigi Scorca April 4, 2020

Luigi

South Africa comes with Blockchain application CoviID, will reward you for isolating • CCnews24
by Alberto Cammozzo April 4, 2020

April 4, 2020

<https://ccnews24.net/south-africa-comes-with-blockchain-application-coviid-…> South Africa comes with Blockchain application CoviID, will reward you for isolating The application called CoviID is primarily intended for officials to trace all possible physical contacts of already infected people with other people. The CoviID application has the following advantages: It motivates people to follow good hygiene Health check after testing Negatively tested persons will be given greater freedom of movement Positively tested people will be monitored using Bluetooth and geolocation Associate Professor Co-Pierre Georg, UCT’s Master’s in Financial Technology convenor, says Lockdown is effective but cannot work for a long time and is only a temporary solution. Therefore, with their group of students created a application CoviID which will be available in the next three weeks. “The app designers used insights from behavioural economics to create a design that would influenceusers to practise good hygiene and health habits” said co-designer Kungela Mzuku, a former student who is now an innovation developer at Standard Bank. Rewarding will also be one of the features of CoviID If the app detects and confirms that you have been at home for several days, you will be eligible for a discount at a partner store. The designers were inspired by the Discovery’s Vitality program. “This will help the government to incentivise people to do the right thing without having to go into full lockdown every time there is an outbreak, which is very costly,” said Georg. The biggest challenge was privacy, how sensitive medical information will be published and stored to prevent leakage. “Designing this kind of app is not rocket science, and we’re not the first or only ones to do it. The thing that makes us different, however, is the fact that we’ve designed this from a privacy-first perspective,” said Georg. The application will use Blockchain technology to ensure sufficient security. All collected data, such as infection status, is stored on the phone using SELF SOVEREIGN IDENTITY technology to ensure that data is not stored in a centralized government or private database. Published anti-coronavirus applications fail mainly in security, such as the apps from Oxford University or the British National Health Service , so we believe that the app from the creators of South Africa will meet expectations and prevent the spread of the pandemic called Coronavirus.

A Microsoft Employee Literally Wrote Washington’s Facial Recognition Law
by Alberto Cammozzo April 4, 2020

April 4, 2020

<https://onezero.medium.com/a-microsoft-employee-literally-wrote-washingtons…> Tuesday should have been a win for privacy advocates. Washington state signed SB 6280 into law, making it the first state in the country to pass a facial recognition bill, which outlines how the government can and cannot use the technology. But a closer look reveals the bill’s flaws. The law does little to curtail government use of facial recognition, instead setting up basic transparency and accountability mechanisms for when the state does decide to deploy dystopian real-time surveillance. The bill has little impact on the commercial development or sale of facial recognition technology. The bill doesn’t limit sales to law enforcement, or even hold companies responsible for the outcomes of their algorithms. The bill was sponsored by State Senator Joe Nguyen, who is currently employed as a program manager by Microsoft It’s no surprise then that the bill was championed by Microsoft in public and behind closed doors. In fact, the bill was literally sponsored by State Senator Joe Nguyen, who is currently employed as a program manager by Microsoft. I’m not a fan of the phrase “Let that sink in,” but you really do have to take a minute and think about that one. The ACLU of Washington wrote a strong rebuttal of the law, which is set to take effect in July, saying that anything short of a facial recognition ban will not safeguard civil liberties. “Alternative regulations supported by big tech companies and opposed by impacted communities do not provide adequate protections — in fact, they threaten to legitimize the infrastructural expansion of powerful face surveillance technology,” ACLU project manager Jennifer Lee wrote. “This is why we strongly opposed SB 6280, which purports to put safeguards around the use of facial recognition technology but does just the opposite.” The transparency and accountability measures are better than nothing. The new law requires state and local government agencies to alert the public about what facial recognition algorithms they are buying, and train its staff adequately to use the technology. Companies selling the technology to the government now need to open their algorithms to independent testing. State or local prosecutors relying on facial recognition must tell defendants that before the trial. But when it comes to real-time surveillance, the new law says police must now get a warrant except in the broad case of “exigent circumstances,” enshrining the capability of real-time facial recognition in the state legislature. In other facial recognition news, Wolfcom, which, as revealed by OneZero, is testing live facial recognition in police body cameras, recently spoke with Government Technology about its new tech. “People are always afraid of something new, but there’s no stopping technology. We can either ignore it and other people develop it, or we can understand it’s here to stay … and try to steer its path toward the force of good, ” Wolfcom CEO Peter Onruang said. Onruang said concerns about constant police surveillance were overblown. “I know there are fears out there that people will get shot for facial recognition. That’s not what it will be designed for … It’s only meant to help an officer realize there’s a possibility (they’re interacting with a wanted or missing person),” he said. Thankfully, no technology has ever been used for something other than what it was designed for. [...]

Move Fast & Roll Your Own Crypto: A Quick Look at the Confidentiality of Zoom Meetings - The Citizen Lab
by Alberto Cammozzo April 3, 2020

April 3, 2020

<https://citizenlab.ca/2020/04/move-fast-roll-your-own-crypto-a-quick-look-a…> This report examines the encryption that protects meetings in the popular Zoom teleconference app. We find that Zoom has “rolled their own” encryption scheme, which has significant weaknesses. In addition, we identify potential areas of concern in Zoom’s infrastructure, including observing the transmission of meeting encryption keys through China. Key Findings Zoom documentation claims that the app uses “AES-256” encryption for meetings where possible. However, we find that in each Zoom meeting, a single AES-128 key is used in ECB mode by all participants to encrypt and decrypt audio and video. The use of ECB mode is not recommended because patterns present in the plaintext are preserved during encryption. The AES-128 keys, which we verified are sufficient to decrypt Zoom packets intercepted in Internet traffic, appear to be generated by Zoom servers, and in some cases, are delivered to participants in a Zoom meeting through servers in China, even when all meeting participants, and the Zoom subscriber’s company, are outside of China. Zoom, a Silicon Valley-based company, appears to own three companies in China through which at least 700 employees are paid to develop Zoom’s software. This arrangement is ostensibly an effort at labor arbitrage: Zoom can avoid paying US wages while selling to US customers, thus increasing their profit margin. However, this arrangement may make Zoom responsive to pressure from Chinese authorities. [...]

"Singapore, vado a Singapore…"

Singapore to shut down workplaces and schools - contact tracing isn't effective enough. Prime minister says "despite our good contact tracing, for nearly half of these [new] cases, we do not know where or from whom the person caught the virus." https://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/health/most-workplaces-to-close-scho… -- Antonio A.
