*Google is Breaking the Internet** * /Jeremy Palmer/ 18 May 2014 I received an interesting email the other day from a company we linked to from one of our websites. In short, the email was a request to remove links from our site to their site. We linked to this company on our own accord, with no prior solicitation, because we felt it would be useful to our site visitors, which is generally why people link to things on the Internet. Apparently Google convinced them, via their Webmaster Tools portal, that the link looked "unnatural", and that they should use the Link Disavow Tool <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eFJZXpnsRsc> to discredit the link. Furthermore, they thought it necessary to contact us to manually remove the link, which is something I'm not going to do (out of principle). For the last 10 years, Google has been instilling and spreading irrational fear into webmasters. They've convinced site owners that any link, outside of a purely editorial link from an "authority site", could be flagged as a bad link, and subject the site to ranking and/or index penalties. This fear, uncertainty and doubt (FUD) campaign has webmasters everywhere doing unnatural things, which is what Google claims they're trying to stop. It's a question that Matt Haughey, founder of legendary Internet forum MetaFilter, has been asking himself for the last year and a half, as declining ad revenues have forced the long-running site to lay off several of its staff. MetaFilter, Haughey told me, made the bulk of its revenue through Google's AdSense program. That is, MetaFilter worked with Google ad representatives to place advertising on its pages that was served by Google. In turn, most of MetaFilter's visitors came via Google searches. Esiste o non esiste il diritto all'oblio in rete? E se esiste quali sono i suoi confini e le modalità per la sua tutela? In un mondo in cui ogni informazione diffusa in rete è indicizzata dai motori di ricerca e resa potenzialmente trovabile in pochi secondi, coloro che non sono interessati a questo tipo di "notorietà" digitale hanno il diritto a non essere trovati, a non essere ricordati, a non essere indicizzati? E ancora, qual è il confine tra il diritto alla riservatezza di un individuo e il diritto degli altri soggetti ad essere informati su ogni fatto potenzialmente utile alla collettività? We represent the interests of authors who want to harness this potential to share their creations more broadly in order to serve the public good. Unfortunately, authors face many barriers that prevent the full realization of this potential to enhance public access to knowledge and creativity. Authors who are eager to share their existing works may discover that those works are out of print, un-digitized, and subject to copyrights signed away long before the digital age. Authors who are eager to share new works may feel torn between publication outlets that maximize public access and others that restrict access but provide important value in terms of peer review, prestige, or monetary reward. Authors may also struggle to understand how to navigate fair use and the rights clearance process in order to lawfully build on existing works. The mission of Authors Alliance is to further the public interest in facilitating widespread access to works of authorship by assisting and representing authors who want to disseminate knowledge and products of the imagination broadly. We provide information and tools designed to help authors better understand and manage key legal, technological, and institutional aspects of authorship in the digital age. These are contingent, of course, on the fact that the NSA’s procedures allow widespread targeting of Americans <https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2013/06/depth-review-new-nsa-documents-expose…>. Much of the material published on May 13 expanded on the disturbing revelations that we’ve already seen, but there were some standout points: new information about the degree of spying on the U.N. and other foreign officials, documents demonstrating the economic espionage aspect of NSA surveillance, and some interesting technical details about NSA programs. Among those technical details, what was especially striking for those of us in the United States were the slides that described how the FBI enables NSA surveillance. A series of slides demonstrated that the FBI essentially serves as an attack dog for the NSA, doing the NSA’s domestic dirty work. One slide, which was previously published, notes that for purposes of PRISM, relationships with communications providers are only through the FBI. Another slide describes how the FBI and NSA partner to “address an unreliable and incomplete Facebook collection system.” (slide81.jpg <safari-reader://www.eff.org/files/2014/05/20/slide81.jpg>). There are also a series of slides describing the FBI’s relationship with Microsoft. One notes that the NSA is now able to collect Microsoft Skydrive data as a “result of the FBI working for many months with Microsoft to get this tasking and collection solution established .” (slide27.jpg <safari-reader://www.eff.org/files/2014/05/20/slide27.jpg>). Clearly, the NSA would have a much more difficult—if not impossible—time collecting information without the FBI. None of this should be surprising.
