It's quite likely that the only project in my dataset that you've heard of is Wikipedia. I'm am still finishing interviews but I'm hoping I can use feedback from the group to help frame the work going forward. My initial results are based on data from 8 projects -- the full population -- in the form of interviews of the projects' founders and extensive archival data. My findings are a set of propositions focused on suggesting why Wikipedia succeeded in attracting contributors while the other projects did so less effectively. In a follow-up project, I'm hoping to test these in a quantitative dataset I've been building. The project is part of a larger research project that attempts to use failure cases to understand why some attempts at online collective action are successful while most never take off.

Ne sono certo, come probabilmente anche IdV, ma ricordo bene come sia stato proprio Cappato che alla Festa dei Pirati del 2010 a dire come sia necessario smettere di delegare le nostre istanze ai politici e scendere direttamente in campo. Sarebbe comunque interessante sentire Cortiana cosa ne pensa e se avesse voglia di mettersi alla testa di questa avventura. Per quanto mi riguarda anche Cappato avrebbe le caratteristiche adatte per fare il leader di questo soggetto politico ma ho la sensazione che sarà una delle punte di diamante che i Radicali metteranno in campo alle prossime elezioni, specialmente se non rinnoveranno l'accordo con il PD. The conference is based on the notion of a convergence model developed by Professor Gunilla Bradley. The convergence model includes several broad concepts. These are increasingly interacting with an accelerating speed: ICT; Globalization; Life Environment: Life Role; and Effects on Humans. These five concepts correspond to the four conference tracks (Tracks A, B, C and D). Under each broader concept or track, several key words are listed. They are intended to inspire submissions, and to remind contributors that each phenomenon or key word cannot be separated from its actual context at whatever level that lies - the group, organisation or societal level including the national, international or cultural levels. This underpinning notion is tightly related to potential action strategies for human beings to contribute to the Good Information (or ICT) society. Best regards, Francesca ---------------- International Association for Media and Communication Research (IAMCR) DURBAN 2012 EMERGING SCHOLARS NETWORK SECTION CALL FOR PAPERS The Emerging Scholars Network (ESN) invites you to participate in the 2012 International Congress of the IAMCR to be held on July 15-19, 2012 at the Howard College Campus of the University of KwaZulu Natal (UKZN) in Durban, South Africa. This year’s theme is South North Conversations. We call for general academic papers in Communication and Media Studies as well as papers addressing the concrete conference theme. Diverging from traditional world systems implications, this theme reflects the asymmetry of global communication flows, without suggesting the negatives that usually accompany discussions of the 'digital divide' within the context of the “global south.” The term ‘global south’ refers to countries, territories and communities that have been excluded from the mainstream of economic, social and communication development. In much of the discourse around global geo-politics, these countries and communities are still regarded as the recipients of economic and technical largesse from more developed sources. It is the theme of this conference to interrogate this assumption, and to emphasize the communicative empowerment and the positive potential of media and communication in and from the ‘Global South’. For more information on this year’s conference theme please see the general call for papers. The ESN is a section dedicated to the work and careers of emerging scholars in the field of media and communication. Hence, we especially look for works in progress from graduate students and new university instructors/professors who are interested in substantial feedback and comments intended to advance their projects. The ESN organizes emerging scholar panels and joint panels with other sections. Our emerging scholar panels provide a comfortable environment for the presentation of theses and works in progress, where emerging scholars can receive feedback from colleagues also at the beginning of their careers and from senior scholars who act as respondents to individual papers. The joint panels with other sections allow for the exchange of ideas with senior scholars in the field and networking. Should there be enough submissions we are planning to co-sponsor panels together with the following IAMCR Sections and Working Groups: Law Section; Gender and Communication Section; Media Education Section; Political Communication Section; Health, Communication and Change Working Group; and the Task Force on Media Policies.
