by Giuseppe Attardi Nov. 12, 2015

Nov. 12, 2015

— Beppe

Facebook Vows to Appeal Belgian Ruling on Data Privacy
by Alberto Cammozzo Nov. 10, 2015

Nov. 10, 2015

<http://www.nytimes.com/2015/11/11/business/international/facebook-belgium-p…> In Monday’s ruling, a court in Brussels said that Facebook could no longer collect and store online information from people in Belgium who do not have an account with the social network. The court said that Facebook did not have individuals’ consent to gather the information. [] Facebook will face daily fines worth up to $270,000 if it fails to comply with the court’s decision, according to Belgian law. In response, the company said that it had used cookies for more than five years without facing privacy complaints, and that it would now take its case to the Belgian Court of Appeal. But Facebook also said it would take steps to stop collecting online information about people in Belgium who do not use its site by the end of the week. “We are working to minimize any disruption to people’s access to Facebook in Belgium,” Sally Aldous, a company spokeswoman, said in a statement. The case was filed this year by Belgium’s data protection authority, which had balked at changes to Facebook’s terms and conditions that would have given the company greater say over how it collected and used individuals’ online information. Judge Deals a Blow to N.S.A. Data Collection Program
by Alberto Cammozzo Nov. 10, 2015

Nov. 10, 2015

<http://www.nytimes.com/2015/11/10/us/politics/judge-deals-a-blow-to-nsa-pho…> WASHINGTON — A federal judge on Monday partly blocked the National Security Agency’s program that systematically collects Americans’ domestic phone records in bulk just weeks before the agency was scheduled to shut it down and replace it. The judge said the program was most likely unconstitutional. In a separate case challenging the program, a federal appeals court in New York on Oct. 30 had declined to weigh in on the constitutional issues, saying it would be imprudent to interfere with an orderly transition to a replacement system after Nov. 29. <https://ecf.dcd.uscourts.gov/cgi-bin/show_public_doc?2013cv0851-158> Bella la conclusione: “With the government’s authority to operate the bulk telephony metadata program quickly coming to an end, this case is perhaps the last chapter in the judiciary’s evaluation of this particular program’s compatibility with the Constitution. It will not, however, be the last chapter in the ongoing struggle to balance privacy rights and national security interests under our Constitution in an age of evolving technological wizardry. Although this court appreciates the zealousness with which the government seeks to protect the citizens of our nation, that same government bears just as great a responsibility to protect the individual liberties of those very citizens. Pur a fine partita non ha perso l'occasione di segnare il punto. A.

Facebook freebooting
by marco.crepaldi＠ymail.com Nov. 10, 2015

Nov. 10, 2015

Facebook is now attracting more than 4 billion video views per day, up from just one billion in September. It’s unclear how many of these views are coming from copyright-infringing content, but a recent study by ad agency Ogilvy and video analytics firm Tubular Labs found that about 72.5% of the top 1,000 Facebook videos in May were re-uploaded from other sources, an easy task with freely-available software. Le /Things/, definite dai ricercatori del Microsoft Cloud Computing Research Centre come “/any physical entity capable of connectivity that has a direct interface to the physical world (i.e. a sensing and/or actuating capability)/”, sono in grado di cambiare radicalmente alcune idee tradizionali in materia di salute. Berkman Center Webcast live oggi ore 18 - Bridging the gap between computer science and legal approaches to privacy
by Giuseppe Futia Nov. 10, 2015

Nov. 10, 2015

Bridging the gap between computer science and legal approaches to privacy https://cyber.law.harvard.edu/events/luncheon/2015/11/Nissim_Wood <http://cyber.law.harvard.edu/events/luncheon/2014/06/sigal> *with Kobbi Nissim and Alexandra Wood* Today, 6.00 pm Webcast live: http://cyber.law.harvard.edu/interactive/webcast http://nexa.polito.it/berkman-webcast-live Lawyers and computer scientists hold very different notions of privacy. Notably, privacy laws rely on narrower and less formal conceptions of risk than those described by the computer science literature. As a result, the law often creates uncertainty and fails to protect against the full range of data privacy risks. In contrast, emerging mathematical concepts provide robust, formal models for quantifying and mitigating privacy risks. An example of such a model is differential privacy, which provides a provable guarantee of privacy against a wide range of potential attacks, including types of attacks currently unknown or unforeseen. The subject of much theoretical investigation, these new technical methods for privacy protection have recently been making significant strides towards practical implementation. For example, researchers are now building and testing the first generation of tools for differentially private statistical analysis. However, because the law generally relies on very different methods for mitigating risk, a significant challenge to implementation will be demonstrating that the new privacy technologies satisfy legal requirements for privacy protection. In particular, most privacy laws focus on the identifiability of data, or the ability to link an individual to a record in a release of data. In doing so, they often equate privacy with heuristic “de-identification” approaches and provide little guidance for implementing more formal privacy-preserving techniques. In this talk, Kobbi Nissim and Alexandra Wood will articulate the gap between legal and technical approaches to privacy and present a methodology for formally proving that a technological method for privacy protection satisfies the requirements of a particular law. This methodology involves two steps: first, translating a legal standard into a formal mathematical requirement of privacy and, second, constructing a rigorous proof for establishing that a technique satisfies the mathematical requirement derived from the law. The presenters will walk through an example applying this new methodology to bridge the requirements of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and differential privacy. They will conclude the presentation with a discussion of how the methodology could help further the real-world adoption of new privacy technologies. This talk summarizes early results from ongoing research by Kobbi Nissim, Aaron Bembenek, Mark Bun, Marco Gaboardi, and Salil Vadhan from the Center for Research on Computation and Society, together with Urs Gasser, David O’Brien, and Alexandra Wood from the Berkman Center for Internet & Society. Further work building from this approach is anticipated to form the basis of a future publication. This research is also part of a broader collaboration through the Privacy Tools for Sharing Research Data project, which aims to build legal and technical tools, such as tools for differentially private statistical analysis, to help enable the wider sharing of social science research data while protecting the privacy of individuals. About Kobbi Kobbi Nissim is a Professor of Computer Science at Ben-Gurion University and a Senior Research Fellow at the Center for Research on Computation and Society at Harvard. Trained in cryptography, Kobbi always maintains a healthy level of paranoia, and feels the ground is shaky whenever issues of security and privacy are not formally defined and analysed. Nissim's current work is focused on the mathematical formulation and understanding of privacy. His work from 2003 and 2004 with Dinur and Dwork initiated rigorous foundational research of privacy and presented a precursor of Differential Privacy, a strong definition of privacy in computation that he introduced in 2006 with Dwork, McSherry and Smith. With collaborators, Nissim established some of the basic constructions supporting differential privacy, and studied differential privacy in various contexts, including statistics, computational learning, mechanism design, and social networks. Since 2011, Kobbi has been involved with the Privacy Tools for Sharing Research Data project at Harvard University, developing privacy-preserving tools for the sharing of social science data. Other contributions of Nissim include the BGN homomorphic encryption scheme with Boneh and Goh, and the research of private approximations. In 2013, Nissim received with Irit Dinur the Alberto O. Mendelzon Test-of-Time award for their PODS 2003 work on privacy. In 2016, he will receive with Dwork, McSherry and Smith the TCC test of time award for their TCC 2006 work on differential privacy. About Alexandra Alexandra Wood is a fellow at the Berkman Center for Internet & Society and a member of the Privacy Tools for Sharing Research Data project at Harvard University. A lawyer by training, her research explores new and existing regulatory frameworks for data privacy and their compatibility with approaches to privacy emerging from the literature in other fields. Alexandra has also been contributing to the development of new legal instruments, analytical frameworks, and policy recommendations to better support the sharing and use of research data while preserving privacy, utility, transparency, and accountability. Before joining the Berkman Center, she served as a legal fellow with U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer and as a law clerk with the Center for Democracy & Technology and the Electronic Privacy Information Center.

Guardian: "Robot revolution: rise of 'thinking' machines could exacerbate inequality"
by J.C. DE MARTIN Nov. 8, 2015

Nov. 8, 2015

*Robot revolution: rise of 'thinking' machines could exacerbate inequality* /Global economy will be transformed over next 20 years at risk of growing inequality, say analysts/ Heather Stewart Thursday 5 November 2015 00.01 GMT A “robot revolution” will transform the global economy over the next 20 years, cutting the costs of doing business but exacerbating social inequality, as machines take over everything from caring for the elderly to flipping burgers, according to a new study. As well as robots performing manual jobs, such as hoovering the living room or assembling machine parts, the development of artificial intelligence means computers are increasingly able to “think”, performing analytical tasks once seen as requiring human judgment. Robot doctors and lawyers? It’s a change we should embrace Daniel Susskind Read more In a 300-page report, revealed exclusively to the Guardian, analysts from investment bank Bank of America Merrill Lynch draw on the latest research to outline the impact of what they regard as a fourth industrial revolution, after steam, mass production and electronics. Taggalo retail analytics Video+Wifi+Beacon in negozi italiani?
by Alberto Cammozzo Nov. 8, 2015

Nov. 8, 2015

Milan-Based Company Launches Multi-Tech Device For Tracking Real-World Customers <http://marketingland.com/milan-based-company-launches-multi-tech-device-for…> [] Taggalo provides what it says is the only all-in-one device that combines video analytics, WiFi tracking and beacon technology, with the data presented via a web dashboard. It also offers a white-label mobile app for stores to use with the beacon functionality. [] The stats can include the number of people who walk by the store, the number of customers who pause to look at a product and the time spent, which smartphones are making a repeat visit (as determined by their anonymous device IDs) and the demographics of store customers. This latter category includes not just gender and age approximation, but also “ethnic group.” The company said this includes race, such as Caucasian or African-American. When I asked if this kind of racial tracking could be a problem, CEO Luca Nestola told me that Taggalo just provided the data, and it was up to the store to use it responsibly. It’s not clear yet what legitimate value racial identification offers to stores. About a dozen retailers have been using the devices in Europe and the US, the company said, including Altromercato, a consortium of shops in Italy. Taggalo said that there have been reports of sales lifts of two to three percent by some stores because of better customer info. La pagina "About us" mi tranquillizza: <http://www.taggalo.co.uk/new2/?page_id=2295> YOUR PRIVACY MATTERS TO US No personal information. No identifying data. The reports we provide to retailers and media owners do not include any personal information. We make no attempt to link any data, behavioural or otherwise, to individuals. Limited data collected. Our sensors collect only basic information. This does not include any sensitive data such as who you are, whom you call, or the websites you visit. Easy opt-out and deletion. Device owners with any concerns can easily opt out of participation and delete all of their existing data from our servers by sending an email to privacy(a)taggalo.co.uk.
