Jacobin: "Against the Crowdfunding Economy"
by J.C. DE MARTIN May 19, 2016

May 19, 2016

*Against the Crowdfunding Economy* /Crowdfunding websites marketize goodwill./ by Keith A. Spencer Which people get to live their dreams and which do not? In the art world, as elsewhere, success is often tightly correlated with pedigree and acceptance into elite institutions. Simpsons writers are likely to be Harvard grads; musician and writer Leonard Cohen purchased his Greek artist’s retreat with his trust fund; Lena Dunham’s debt-free college education gave her the financial freedom to make her first film. Of course most artists aren’t so lucky. And amid the increasing consumption of digital media, the conditions for success have become ever more fraught. Instant access to media — and the massive amount of free content online — makes many feel they should be able to watch, listen, or read whatever they want, whenever they want, at no cost to them. Tech companies, in turn, rely on free content to get eyeballs on their advertisements, and make a tidy profit in the process. Hence, while Silicon Valley profits from our collective free labor, many once-remunerated artists are now paid in exposure. Famed rocker Iggy Pop recently admitted that he couldn’t survive off his music anymore. Actor Wil Wheaton described his frustration last year at being solicited by Huffington Post to write for free. And Nobel Prize–winning poet Tomas Transtromer was never able to support himself as an artist. […]

"The suspect has not been charged with any child-porn related crimes, yet he is imprisoned in Philadelphia's Federal Detention Center for refusing to decrypt two drives encrypted with Apple's FileVault software in a case that highlights the federal government's war on encryption. A federal magistrate has ordered him imprisoned "until such time that he fully complies" with the decryption order." -- Davide Allavena IT Manager & Research Fellow Nexa Center for Internet and Society DAUIN - Politecnico di Torino https://nexacenter.org/people/dallavena

Under-connected in America: How Lower-Income Families Respond to Digital Equity Challenges https://cyber.law.harvard.edu/events/luncheons/2016/05/Katz <http://cyber.law.harvard.edu/events/luncheon/2014/06/sigal> *with Vikki S. Katz, Associate Professor, School of Communication and Information at Rutgers University* Today, 6.00 pm Webcast live: http://cyber.law.harvard.edu/interactive/webcast http://nexa.polito.it/berkman-webcast-live While 94% of parents raising school-age children below the U.S. median household income have an Internet connection, more than half are “under-connected,” in that their Internet connection is too slow, has been interrupted in the past year due to non-payment, and/or they share their Internet-connected devices with too many people. Katz will discuss how being under-connected impacts the everyday lives of lower-income parents and children, how parents assess the risks and rewards that connectivity can offer their children, and the implications of under-connectedness for policy development and program reform. She draws from two linked datasets of lower-income parents with school-age (grades K-8) children that she has collected since 2013: in-depth interviews with 336 parents and children in three states, and a telephone survey of 1,191 parents—the first nationally representative survey of this U.S. demographic. About Vikki Vikki Katz is an Associate Professor in the Department of Communication, and Affiliate Graduate Faculty in the Department of Sociology, at Rutgers University. She conducts research on immigrant and low-income families’ efforts to access U.S. social institutions, resources, and opportunities, with a particular interest in how digital equity issues affect these experiences. Her current projects are funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and the Russell Sage Foundation. Her findings have been published in journals including American Behavioral Scientist, Journal of Communication, and Social Problems, and she is author of Kids in the Middle: How Children of Immigrants Negotiate Community Interactions for their Families (Rutgers U Press, 2014) and co-author of Understanding Ethnic Media: Producers, Consumers, and Societies (Sage, 2011). She is also a Senior Research Fellow at the Joan Ganz Cooney Center at Sesame Workshop, and serves on the PBS Ready to Learn Advisory Board as a Community Engagement expert. She holds a B.A. from UCLA, and an M.A. and Ph.D. from the Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism at the University of Southern California.

http://berkmanassembly.org/ The Berkman Assembly gathers high-level developers and tech industry professionals for a rigorous three-week course at Harvard University, followed by a twelve-week collaborative sprint to explore hard problems with running code. Each Assembly cohort comes together around a defined challenge. The challenge for the pilot in 2017 is the future of digital security: how do we move beyond a world where virtually every computing device and network is insecure? Danah Boyd sulla "algorithmic accountability" di Facebook
by Antonio Casilli May 16, 2016

May 16, 2016

https://points.datasociety.net/facebook-must-be-accountable-to-the-public-7… "This conversation is by no means over. It is only just beginning. My hope is that we quickly leave the state of fear and start imagining mechanisms of accountability that we, as a society, can live with. Institutions like Facebook have tremendous power and they can wield that power for good or evil. But for society to function responsibly, there must be checks and balances regardless of the intentions of any one institution or its leader." -- Antonio A. Casilli Associate Professor, Telecom ParisTech Research Fellow Edgar-Morin Center (EHESS)
