Un luogo profondamente e intimamente umano la cui natura meccanica ha da sempre rappresentato un aspetto imprescindibile, a partire dalla norma letteraria, fondata su regole presupposte e codici che fanno del testo poetico una scrittura diversa dalla lingua d’uso. Un percorso con una tradizione antica, quella dell'oralità, e un presente tecnologico determinante a rinsaldare un legame che si credeva estinto: quello del corpo del poeta nel corpo del testo. Così come a reinventare nuove forme e nuove tecniche di composizione, dal ritornello, alla scrittura automatica, dal cut-up fino alla Sought Poem, che sfrutta i motori di ricerca di Google. While it is easy to focus merely on questions of how burglars use or abuse the built environment — looking for opportunities of illicit entrance — burglary, in fact, requires architecture. It is an explicitly spatial crime, one that cannot exist without a threshold to cross, without “the magic of four walls,” as at least one legal theorist has written. Join Geoff Manaugh, author of the new book A Burglar’s Guide to the City, to discuss more than two thousand years’ worth of heists and break-ins, with a discussion ranging from the surprisingly — one might say uselessly — complicated legal definition of an interior space to the everyday tools burglars use to gain entry. Written over the course of three years of research, Manaugh’s Burglar’s Guide includes flights with the LAPD Air Support Division, a visit with a panic room designer and retired state cop in his New Jersey warehouse, an introduction to the subculture of recreational lock-picking, a still-unsolved bank tunnel heist in 1980s Los Angeles, and much more.

Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, Elon Musk, Larry Page: These are all contemporary “innovators” whose “visionary ideas” and “creative leaps” led to “disruptive realities”—that is, if one buys the rhetoric of certain books and novelty-oriented publications. But those who’ve questioned whether technology really is society’s salve aren’t alone. Lee Vinsel, an assistant professor of science and technology at the Stevens Institute of Technology, wrote a dissertation on innovation and regulation in the early days of the automobile. But lately, he finds that the word “innovation” is overused to the point of meaninglessness—and worse, that it can obfuscate the bleak realities of the status quo. “In a culture where we forget about things like crumbling infrastructure and wage inequality, those narratives about technological change can be really dangerous,” Vinsel says.
