"On Demand, and Demanding Their Rights"
by J.C. DE MARTIN June 28, 2016

June 28, 2016

*On Demand, and Demanding Their Rights* /Gig workers in the Uber economy are organizing to win more say over their jobs—and writing a new chapter in American labor history.// /Steven Greenhouse Steven Greenhouse was a reporter at The New York Times for 31 years and was its labor and workplace reporter from 1995 to 2014. He is currently a visiting researcher at the Russell Sage Foundation. He is the author of The Big Squeeze: Tough Time for the American Worker and is currently working on a book about the future of America's workers. June 28, 2016 Travis Kalanick, Uber’s founder, recently recalled that when he first started the company seven years ago, “it was easy to communicate with the handful of drivers using the app.” Uber’s marketing manager called each of the drivers regularly, Kalanick said, “to get their feedback and make sure things were working well.” Nowadays, Uber has far more than a handful of drivers—it has more than 400,000 in the United States alone, and many drivers complain that Uber’s managers no longer listen to them to make sure things are working well. “They do whatever they want,” said Bigu Haider, an Uber driver in New York who is furious at Uber over fare cuts and other moves that have reduced his income. “I don’t see any voice for the drivers.” […] Continua qui: http://prospect.org/article/demand-and-demanding-their-rights-0

Fwd: Action Alert: Final push for Net Neutrality in the EU

Net Neutrality is on the line in the EU, and the regulators want to hear what you have to say. Take action now to stand up for Net Neutrality. > > With your help, we can achieve effective, comprehensive Net Neutrality protection in the EU. And a more open internet in Europe means a better internet for everyone around the world. To find out more, check out our original email below. > > Help keep the momentum going by taking action today! > > Estelle > > Hi Juan Carlos, > > I have great news! The regulators responsible for defining how Net Neutrality rules are implemented across the EU have released a draft guideline, and it’s pretty good. Now, the Body of European Regulators for Electronic Communications (BEREC) is accepting comments on the draft, so we have one last opportunity to make sure Net Neutrality rules in the EU are the strongest possible. > > Take action now to help BEREC turn its good work to protect Net Neutrality into something truly great, and to ensure that the internet stays free and open. > > > > It’s a good moment for Net Neutrality globally -- yesterday in the US, a court ruling solidified and reaffirmed the country’s open internet rules. And BEREC can build on this victory. Thanks to activists like you, the EU has already adopted the Telecoms Single Market regulation, which contains critical protections for Net Neutrality. Now, BEREC -- tasked with creating guidelines for implementing Net Neutrality in Europe -- can close any remaining loopholes in the TSM. > > We’re almost there already. BEREC has been under extreme pressure from companies like Telefónica, Deutche Telecom, and Orange. But it has stayed strong against the lobbyists. Its draft guidelines for implementing Net Neutrality ban “sub-internet” zero rating offers like Facebook’s Free Basics. That’s a huge win for us. These types of zero rating programmes deny access to the full internet, and disproportionately discriminate against underprivileged users. They empower huge companies to decide what is accessible and what is not, which limits free expression, stifles innovation, and threatens the free and open internet. > > But there’s a problem. The draft takes a different, more ambiguous approach to the type of zero rating programmes that telcos have implemented. The text leaves it open for regulators to misinterpret the rules and allow programmes that put at risk users’ choice, freedom to receive and impart information, and media plurality. Some regulators would enforce the rules properly, but others might not have the resources -- or the desire -- to do so, leaving some internet users in Europe at risk of Net Neutrality violations. > > We are so, so close to getting everything needed to ensure comprehensive Net Neutrality in the EU. BEREC has already taken a strong stance against zero rating despite pressure from corporate lobbyists. A word of encouragement from concerned internet users like you could make all the difference in helping regulators clarify the guidelines. Act now to help put an end to net discrimination in the EU for good. > > Act now to help put an end to net discrimination in the EU for good. > > Thanks for all you do, > > Estelle > > > > Spread the word! Russian bill requires encryption backdoors in all messenger apps
by Alberto Cammozzo June 26, 2016

June 26, 2016

Backdoors into encrypted communications may soon be mandatory in Russia. A new bill in the Russian Duma, the country's lower legislative house, proposes to make cryptographic backdoors mandatory in all messaging apps in the country so the Federal Security Service—the successor to the KGB—can obtain special access to all communications within the country. Apps like WhatsApp, Viber, and Telegram, all of which offer varying levels of encrypted security for messages, are specifically targeted in the "anti-terrorism" bill, according to Russian-language media. Fines for offending companies could reach 1 million rubles or about $15,000. The new Russian legislation, which has already been approved by the Committee on Security, is just the latest such flare up in a global debate over encryption that earned a bright spotlight in the U.S. earlier this year, particularly after the San Bernardino terrorist attack led the FBI to plead for access to one of the shooter's encrypted iPhones. Russian Senator Yelena Mizulina argued that the new bill ought to become law because, she said, teens are brainwashed in closed groups on the internet to murder police officers, a practice protected by encryption. Mizulina then went further. "Maybe we should revisit the idea of pre-filtering [messages]," she said. "We cannot look silently on this." Privacy Shield: UE commission & US gov addresses concerns
by Alberto Cammozzo June 26, 2016

June 26, 2016

*EU to adopt new US data rules in July* The European Commission is set to present a new draft of its data-exchange pact with the US, the Privacy Shield, in early July. EU justice commissioner Vera Jourova told EUobserver in a recent interview that the most contentious issues had been agreed by Washington and Brussels. These concerned access to data by US security services, bulk collection of people’s personal information and independent oversight. “We reached an accord on more precise listing of cases when bulk collection can occur and a better definition of how our American partners understand the difference between bulk collection which may be justified and mass surveillance without any purpose, which is not tolerable”, she said. [] Giovanni Buttarelli, the European data protection supervisor (EDPS), told reporters in May he too had "serious concerns" with Privacy Shield. But Jourova remained confident. Aside from having narrowed down on US bulk collection, she said she had also tackled the problem of oversight. The US has promised to set up a special ombudsman, embedded in the state department, to help deal with complaints from EU nationals. But doubts emerged over the independence of the new office. Jourova told this website that "a more precise definition of competencies, status, and functioning" of the ombudsman have since been agreed. Not everything is ready, however. Jourova said the EU and US still need to agree on how long firms can retain the data and for what purpose. "We want to make sure that personal data will only be kept for that period which is necessary and to agree on exceptions which enable them to keep data for a longer time," she said. Exceptions in the EU include retaining data for scientific research purposes or for healthcare needs. “In the US they have a broader, a more benevolent system [on retention], and everything that we do on Privacy Shield is to make sure that there’ll be equivalent, not the same, but equivalent, protection [for EU and US nationals]”, she said. <https://euobserver.com/justice/133941> *EU, United States agree on changes to strengthen data transfer pact* The European Union and the United States have agreed changes to a data transfer pact that is key to transatlantic business, including stricter rules for companies holding information on Europeans and clearer limits on U.S. surveillance. The revised EU-U.S. Privacy Shield was sent for review by European member states overnight. They are expected to hold a vote in early July, several EU sources said, at which point it will enter into force. [] EU privacy regulators expressed concern about an initial deal struck in February. The U.S. government has now explained further the specific conditions under which intelligence services might have to collect data in bulk and safeguards on how the data is used, EU sources said. A letter from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, seen by Reuters, gives an example of the United States seeking information on the activities of a terrorist group in the Middle East believed to be plotting attacks against Europe. If Washington does not have information such as names, phone numbers or email addresses it would collect communications "to and from that region for further review and analysis to identify those communications that relate to the group," the letter says. "Thus, even when targeting through the use of specific selectors is not possible, the United States does not collect all communications from all communications facilities in the world." The United States also explained how a new privacy official - whose role would be to field complaints from EU citizens about U.S. spying - would be independent from the intelligence services. <http://www.reuters.com/article/us-eu-dataprotection-usa-idUSKCN0ZA1QT>

"The Murky Ethics of Driverless Cars"
by J.C. DE MARTIN June 24, 2016

June 24, 2016

*The Murky Ethics of Driverless Cars* /A new study explores a moral dilemma facing the creators of self-driving vehicles: In an accident, whose lives should they prioritize?/ By Tom Jacobs So you’re driving down a dark road late at night when suddenly a child comes darting out onto the pavement. Instinctively, you swerve, putting your own safety in jeopardy to spare her life. Very noble of you. But would you want your driverless vehicle to do the same? That question, which can be found idling at the intersection of technology and ethics, is posed in the latest issue of Science. A variation on the famous trolley dilemma, it won’t be theoretical for long: Self-driving vehicles are coming soon, and they will need to be programmed how to respond to emergencies.
