L'API del lavoro umano
by Antonio Casilli July 2, 2016

Cheers, ---a -- Antonio A. The landmark document specifically condemns internet shutdowns and renews 2012 and 2014 resolutions that declared, unequivocally, that human rights apply online just as they do offline. *“The UN has boldly spoken against the pressing problem of internet shutdowns. This unanimous statement by the world’s highest human rights body should give governments pause before they order blocking, throttling, and other barriers to information,”* said Peter Micek, Global Policy and Legal Counsel at Access Now.*“Development and human rights protections are strengthened in tandem when networks remain open, secure, and stable. All stakeholders, from telcos to activists to judges, must band together to demand an end to shutdowns.”* The resolution faced opposition by a small number of influential member states who attempted to water down the text. Access Now joined a group of civil society organizations to urge Human Rights Council member states in a letter <https://www.article19.org/resources.php/resource/38428/en/unhrc:-reject-att…> to pass the resolution by consensus, citing its importance for bridging the gender digital divide; advancing the Sustainable Development Goals; and incorporating a human rights-based approach into expanding internet connectivity. As the letter notes, the Human Rights Council had twice previously affirmed by consensus that “the same rights that people have offline must also be protected online.” *“This resolution marks a major milestone in the fight against internet shutdowns. The international community has listened to the voices of civil society — many of whom have suffered under shutdowns themselves — and laudably pushed back on this pernicious practice,”* said Deji Olukotun, Senior Global Advocacy Manager at Access Now. *“Shutdowns harm everyone and allow human rights crackdowns to happen in the dark, with impunity. Citizens can’t participate fully in democratic discourse during elections. The Human Rights Council’s principled stance is a crucial step in telling the world that shutdowns need to stop.”* The #KeepitOn campaign features nearly 90 organizations from 41 countries around the globe who are pushing back on internet shutdowns at every level, from governments to telcos to tech companies to everyday internet users. The full list of organizations is available on the campaign website: https://www.accessnow.org/keepiton/ The UN resolution follows a recent shutdown in <https://twitter.com/TurkeyBlocks/status/747923755079471105>Turkey surrounding bombing attacks, one in Bahrain around protests <https://www.accessnow.org/internet-disrupted-bahrain-around-protests-wrestl…>, and another in Algeria <http://www.smex.org/algeria-reconsiders-blocking-social-media-to-prevent-ch…> to prevent cheating on school exams. Notably, police in Ghana have backtracked from claims <http://www.dailytrust.com.ng/news/general/ghana-police-cancel-social-media-…> that they intend to block social media during upcoming elections in November 2016, after an uproar from civil society groups, politicians, and the UN. Last year, Access Now recorded at least 15 internet shutdowns around the world, and has already recorded 20 shutdowns in the first half of 2016. -- David Sullivan Global Network Initiative <http://www.globalnetworkinitiative.org/> Mobile: +1 646 595 5373 @David_MSullivan <https://twitter.com/David_MSullivan> -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "participants" group. FP: "The Man Who Nailed Jello to the Wall"

*The Man Who Nailed Jello to the Wall* /Westerners said the web could never be controlled. Lu Wei, China's departing internet czar, proved them all wrong./ By Bethany Allen-Ebrahimian June 29, 2016 On March 8, 2000, U.S. President Bill Clinton hailed the arrival of a new era, one in which the internet would mean the triumph of liberty around the world. He dismissed China’s fledgling efforts to restrain online speech. “Good luck,” quipped Clinton. “That’s sort of like trying to nail Jello to the wall.” More than 16 years later, however, it appears that China has largely succeeded in doing just that. Key to this achievement was Lu Wei, known as China’s internet czar. The charismatic head of the Central Leading Group for Cyberspace Affairs, China’s internet regulator, channeled the vision and confidence of strongman President Xi Jinping and, with a barrage of strict new policies aimed at corralling online speech, plugged the holes left by the prior administration’s half-measures, which left social media a flourishing space where government was often criticized. On June 29, state news agency Xinhua confirmed reports that Lu would be stepping down, an unexpected move. It’s unclear what prompted the move, or what’s next for Lu. But his legacy, and China’s unprecedented system of internet controls, are unlikely to fade. […]

by Mauro Alovisio June 30, 2016

The Drone War Crosses Another Line
by Alberto Cammozzo June 29, 2016

June 29, 2016

<http://www.defenseone.com/threats/2016/05/drone-war-crosses-another-line/12…> America took an unprecedented step over the weekend when Obama authorized the Pentagon rather than the CIA to carry out an airstrike inside Pakistan. [] And Saturday’s strike was carried out not by the CIA, which runs and doesn’t acknowledge the U.S. drone campaign in Pakistan, but by the military—which means that unlike the supposedly covert strikes carried out by the intelligence agency, this one was publicized by the Pentagon spokesman, on Twitter. And it means that, like the 2011 commando raid into Pakistan that killed al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden, Saturday’s strike involved public celebration of an attack in a country with which the United States is not, technically, at war—and which, in theory, is an ally in the war on terrorism.

NATO and the Pentagon Want to Get Their Hands on the Technology Behind Bitcoin
by Alberto Cammozzo June 29, 2016

June 29, 2016

<http://www.defenseone.com/technology/2016/05/nato-and-pentagon-want-get-the…> Both the US Department of Defense (DoD) and NATO have put out requests for military-related apps built on blockchain, a decentralized digital ledger system. The ledger is stored in multiple copies across a large group and changes are sent out to all of them immediately, using a mathematical protocol that makes the ledger tamper-proof. That creates an immutable record of the information, and since everyone has a copy of the data, records are still safe even if a few people are hacked. The two are looking at different implementations. The DoD’s Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, or DARPA, wants to use blockchain to create a secure messaging service. The group recently put out a public request for pitches on the project, and wants a web or native messaging app to help secure communications between different departments and even potentially troops in combat. NATO is looking at more traditional uses—using blockchains to make military logistics, procurement, and finance more efficient.
