"Culture wars: Preserving digital content on the blockchain"
by J.C. DE MARTIN July 25, 2016

July 25, 2016

*Culture wars: Preserving digital content on the blockchain* July 25, 2016 | By Don Tapscott and Alex Tapscott—co-authors of Blockchain Revolution Free press, free speech, and personal privacy are essential to an open, free, and prosperous society. On one hand, journalists and authors must be able to communicate privately and anonymously. On the other hand, they must be able to speak freely and securely without fear of repercussion. In both cases, they must be able to support what they do. Online censorship, the hacking of large institutions and civil society, systematic piracy and data fracking, and Edward Snowden’s revelations of mass and targeted surveillance have driven people of well-established democracies to seek anonymous, encrypted, and monetizable communications through blockchain technologies. These tools enable them to disguise their identities and scramble their messages in transit and in storage so that only authorized persons may access them in exchange for cryptocurrency such as Bitcoin. EDRI: Three steps to end freedom of expression
by J.C. DE MARTIN July 25, 2016

July 25, 2016

*Three steps to end freedom of expression** * By Joe McNamee Our right to freedom of expression is laid out in law by the EU Treaties. To ensure democracy and accountability, this fundamental human right may not be restricted unless it is necessary, achieves an objective of general interest and the measure to restrict it is provided for by law. This guarantee of our fundamental rights is explicitly protected by the EU Treaties (the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union) and by the European Convention on Human Rights). This right is now being actively removed by the European Commission. […] Continua qui: https://edri.org/three-steps-to-end-freedom-expression/

U.S. to Allow Foreigners to Serve Warrants on U.S. Internet Firms The Obama administration is working on a series of agreements with foreign governments that would allow them for the first time to serve U.S. technology companies with warrants for email searches and wiretaps—a move that is already stirring debates over privacy, security, crime and terrorism. continua qui: http://www.wsj.com/articles/obama-administration-negotiating-international-… -- Prof. Avv. LSE: Liberating Data: How libraries and librarians can help researchers with text and data mining.
by J.C. DE MARTIN July 25, 2016

July 25, 2016

*Liberating Data: How libraries and librarians can help researchers with text and data mining.* /With advances in computational methods and the proliferation of data sources, text and data mining offers exciting new directions for research. Neil Stewart, Jane Secker, Chris Morrison and Laurence Horton look at the role of libraries in providing support to researchers for these projects, particularly to help with rights issues and to digitise material for scholarly re-use. Librarians should be bold about the advice they give to researchers and encourage them to use the new copyright exceptions./ […] Continua qui: http://blogs.lse.ac.uk/impactofsocialsciences/2016/07/12/how-libraries-and-…

11 Police Robots Patrolling Around the World
by gianluca quaglia July 24, 2016

July 24, 2016

Law enforcement across the globe use semi-autonomous technology to do what humans find too dangerous, boring, or just can’t. This week, the Cleveland Police had a few nonlethal ones on hand at the Republican National Convention. But even those can be outfitted to kill, as we saw in Dallas earlier this month when police strapped a bomb to an explosive-detonation robot, and boom: a non-lethal robot became a killer. If that thought scares you, you’re not alone. Human rights activists worry these robots lack social awareness crucial to decision-making. “For example, during mass protests in Egypt in January 2011 the army refused to fire on protesters, an action that required innate human compassion and respect for the rule of law,” said Rasha Abdul Rahim of Amnesty International in a statement last year arguing that the UN should ban killer robots. More than a thousand robotics experts, including Elon Musk and Stephen Hawking, signed a letter last summer warning against machines that can select targets without human control. We wanted to find out just how many of these things are in use around the world. But law enforcement isn’t exactly forthcoming about the topic, so this list is not exhaustive. Here’s what we found. Police asked this 3D printing lab to recreate a dead man’s fingers to unlock his phone
by Alberto Cammozzo July 22, 2016

July 22, 2016

Last month, law enforcement officers showed up at the lab of Anil Jain, a professor at Michigan State University. Jain wasn’t in trouble; the officers wanted his help. Jain is a computer science professor who works on biometric identifiers such as facial recognition programs, fingerprint scanners and tattoo matching; he wants to make them as difficult to hack as possible. But the police were interested in the opposite of this: they wanted his help to unlock a dead man’s phone. Jain and his PhD student Sunpreet Arora couldn’t share details of the case with me, since it’s an ongoing investigation, but the gist is this: a man was murdered, and the police think there might be clues to who murdered him stored in his phone. But they can’t get access to the phone without his fingerprint or passcode. So instead of asking the company that made the phone to grant them access, they’re going another route: having the Jain lab create a 3D printed replica of the victim’s fingers. With them, they hope to unlock the phone. Arora described how this works to me. The police already have a scan of the victim’s fingerprints taken while he was alive (apparently he had been arrested previously). They gave those scans to the lab, and using them Arora has created 3D printed replicas of all ten digits. [...] <http://fusion.net/story/327145/3d-print-dead-mans-fingers-to-unlock-his-pho…>

French State of Emergency: Overbidding Mass Surveillance
by Antonio Casilli July 21, 2016

July 21, 2016

"Paris, 21 July 2016 — Once again. The State of Emergency in France has been extended until January. In reaction to violence shaking the country and with the presidential election of 2017 only a few months away, political leaders are indulging an ignominious orgy of security-driven policy. Not satisfied with merely prolonging the state of emergency, lawmakers have also amended the 2015 Intelligence Act passed last year to legalize domestic mass surveillance. (...) Then, again according to Le Monde, during the previous National Council of Intelligence last January, the decision was taken to "put under surveillance all the communication data of the 11 700 persons with a S-File linked with radical islamism". Until now, this form of surveillance targeted only individuals who had been "identified as a [terrorist] threat". But now, in accordance with this amendment, the code of national security stipulates that an individual has to merely be identified as "potentially related to a threat" or to belong to "the entourage" of individuals "potentially related to a threat", to have his or her metadata analysed in real time, and for four months, by intelligence services."
