Sperando di fare cosa gradita, segnalo che in autunno (7-8 ottobre 2016) si terrà un convegno su “Nodi virtuali, legami informali: Internet alla ricerca di regole (A venticinque anni dalla nascita del Web)”. L’evento è organizzato dall’Università di Pisa, nell’ambito delle attività del Master in Internet Ecosystem: Governance e Diritti, diretto dalla prof.ssa Dianora Poletti. L’incontro si struttura in tre sessioni. Nella prima (Legami informali: Internet e la destrutturazione delle regole tradizionali), i relatori invitati tracceranno la parabola dell’allontanamento che il web ha imposto rispetto ai tradizionali modi di produzione del diritto. Nella seconda (Nodi virtuali), saranno predisposti panels inerenti a specifiche tematiche, di diritto nazionale, sovranazionale e comparato, che saranno discusse tra gli interventori selezionati in base alla presente call. La terza sessione (Nodi concretizzati, legami formalizzati: dall’anomia ad una comunità organizzata) sarà dedicata all’individuazione, in una serie di relazioni, dei fondamenti attorno cui la comunità degli internet users si riconosce ed è destinata a riconoscersi nel prossimo futuro. The directory is intended to make finding helpful quantitative data about a broad range of Internet-related topics—broadband, cybersecurity, freedom of expression, and more—easier for researchers, policymakers, journalists, and the public. Users can search, sort, and filter records within this database to identify datasets relevant to their work. The vast majority of datasets within the directory are themselves open and publicly available. Records in the directory include the name of the data source, a short description of the available data, and a link. Data sources are tagged both by geographic coverage (including global, regional, and country-level tags) and by topic (such as broadband, cybersecurity, and social media). The Net Data Directory is a partner of Internet Monitor, a project of the Berkman Center for Internet & Society at Harvard University.

US plans intervention in EU vs Facebook case caused by NSA snooping Ireland again the battleground between American surveillance and Europeans' Human Rights <http://www.theregister.co.uk/2016/06/13/us_to_intervene_eu_vs_facebook_case/> The US government has asked the Irish High Court to hear its information in the case between a privacy activist and Facebook. Austrian activist and lawyer, Max Schrems, brought his complaint against the social network after the revelations of the NSA's PRISM surveillance program, which he, alongside Digital Rights Ireland, alleged made it illegal for Facebook to shuffle European citizens' data to America under EU law. Last year, the Court of Justice of the EU <http://www.theregister.co.uk/2015/10/06/safe_harbour_walls_come_tumbling_do…> (CJEU) ruled in their favor. However, responding to a subsequent complaint <http://www.theregister.co.uk/2016/05/25/ireland_data_protection_commissione…> claiming Facebook was still doing this, the Data Protection Commissioner of Ireland sought "declaratory relief in the Irish High Court and a referral to the CJEU to determine the legal status" of those ongoing transfers. At a hearing in the Irish High Court today, the US government has sought to intervene in the case, and the court has been adjourned for two weeks to give it – and other parties – time to file a motion in this regard. A spokesperson for the court confirmed to /The Register/ that the US government, alongside "the American chamber of commerce, the alliance titled ESA, and the business lobby group IBEC, all gave notice in the high court today that they intend to seek to be added as /amicus curiae/," or friend of the court, which would allow them to submit information although they were not directly cited in the court action. In a canned statement, Schrems said: "This may be a unique opportunity for us. I therefore very much welcome that the US government will get involved in this case. This is a huge chance to finally get solid answers in a public procedure. I am very much looking forward to raising all the uncomfortable questions on US surveillance programs in this procedure. It will be very interesting how the US government will react to the clear evidence already before the court."

We need to see the human in the data machine: big data is people

‘Big data is people!’ The sum of our clickstreams is not an objective measure of who we are, but a personal portrait of our hopes and desires <https://aeon.co/essays/why-big-data-is-actually-small-personal-and-very-hum…> [] Most definitions of big data don’t take account of its inherent humanness, nor do they grapple meaningfully with its implications for the relationship between technology and changing ways of defining ourselves. What makes new collections of data different, and therefore significant, is their quality of being generated continuously from people’s mundane, scarcely thought-through, seemingly tiny actions such as Tweets, Facebook likes, Twitches, Google searches, online comments, one-click purchases, even viewing-but-skipping-over a photograph in your feed – along with the intimacy of these actions. They are ‘faint images of me’ (to borrow a phrase from William Gibson’s description of massed data traces), lending ghostly new life to the fruits of algorithmic processing. Examples of the production sites of such data, as the geographer Rob Kitchin recently cataloged them, include the recording of retail purchases; digital devices that save and communicate the history of their own use (such as mobile phones); the logging of transactions and interactions across digital networks (eg email or online banking); clickstream data that record navigation through a website or app; measurements from sensors embedded into objects or environments; the scanning of machine-readable objects such as travel passes or barcodes; ‘automotive telematics’ produced by drivers; and social-media postings. These sources are producing massive, dynamic flows of diverse, fine-grained, relational data. [] Continuously assembled trails of data derived from all those inputs are quickly being put to use. Data streams can feed maps that tell you not just where you are but also where you want to go; they can, as well, fuel preemptive police work – that is, programs that focus investigations based on patterns discerned in data before a subject has committed a crime. Big data is people, then, in two senses. It is made up of our clickstreams and navigational choices; and it in turn makes up many socially significant policies and even self-definitions, allegiances, relationships, choices, categories. Some cultural critics call what is emerging a ‘new mind control’ capable of flipping major elections. Others describe a form of rapacious human engineering. Shoshana Zuboff of Harvard Business School argues that the harnessing of behavioural data is having massively disruptive results on freedom, privacy, moral reasoning and autonomy – results that will be playing out for decades to come. In her view, it is nothing less than a virulent new form of capitalism. The momentum of big-data definitions tends to reinforce the impression that big data is devoid of subjectivity, or of any human point of view at all. A set of social-science scholars working in the field of technology studies recently urged researchers to turn from ‘data-centred’ to ‘people-centred’ methods, arguing that too much focus on a data-driven approach neglects the human being who is at the core of sociological studies. This reminder, however useful, neglects the central fact that data traces are made up of people. []
