Warner Bros. shoots itself in the foot as it flags its own website for piracy
by Elia Gabriele Sept. 6, 2016

[Warner Bros. shoots itself in the foot as it flags its own website for piracy] Warner Bros.<http://thenextweb.com/insider/2016/07/31/warner-bros-google-reddit-piracy/> has long been among Hollywood's<http://thenextweb.com/insider/2016/07/29/hollywood-just-shut-down-a-popular…> most ferocious anti-piracy advocates, but it seems the studio has shot itself in the foot during its latest pursuit of justice. In a recent DMCA notice to Google<https://lumendatabase.org/notices/12882815>, Warner Bros. has mistakenly flagged one of its own pages for pirated content, asking Google to remove the entry from showing up in search results, TorrentFreak<https://torrentfreak.com/warner-bros-flags-website-piracy-portal-160904/> reports. Why Harvard University raising a record-breaking $7 billion is bad news for US education — Quartz
by Elia Gabriele Sept. 5, 2016

Sept. 5, 2016

Articolo ricco di considerazioni sul sistema scolastico-formativo, sulla innovazione in generale (The Number Game – Weak & Strong Link Sports) da cui si può capire come le cattedrali nel deserto non sono utili come l’educazione diffusa. gabriele Why Harvard raising a record-breaking $7 billion is bad news for US education http://qz.com/773562/why-harvard-raising-a-record-breaking-7-billion-is-bad… [https://qzprod.files.wordpress.com/2016/09/harvard-graduation-education.jpg…] Yet another disappointment. (Reuters/Brian Snyder) Akshat Rathi<http://qz.com/author/akshatqz/> 2 hours ago Harvard University has raised $7 billion<http://harvardmagazine.com/2016/09/harvard-capital-campaign-7-billion>, since its fundraising campaign began in 2013. In the process, it has set a new record, beating Stanford University, which raised $6.2 billion in its last campaign that ended in 2011. If you are a Harvard graduate, the money is good news. It’s going to mean that Harvard can secure its place as the top university in the world for longer. It can grow its $36-billion endowment even more and make itself a little more immune to financial shocks, such as the 2008 crisis when its endowment shrunk to nearly half. For the majority of US higher education, however, Harvard’s record is bad news. There are two ways to explain why. Econ 101 Harvard’s campaign is extending the streak of large philanthropic donations given to already very wealthy universities<http://www.chronicle.com/article/Major-Private-Gifts-to-Higher/128264>, who pay no tax on their endowments or on the gains they make by investing the endowment money. In fact, according to the Wall Street Journal<http://www.wsj.com/articles/is-taxing-harvard-yale-and-stanford-the-answer-…> (paywall), “about half of US endowment wealth is held by two dozen schools enrolling 5% of the roughly 20 million students attending American colleges and universities.” A 2015 analysis<http://nexusresearch.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/Rich_Schools_Poor_Stude…> (pdf) looked at how much tax subsidies different kinds of US higher education institutions received. The disparity in the sums was huge. Strengthen the weak Another way to understand why Harvard’s record is bad news for US higher education is through an argument put forth by the writer Malcolm Gladwell in his podcast Revisionist History<http://revisionisthistory.com/episodes/06-my-little-hundred-million>. He says that philanthropists who donate to poorer institutions are likely to going to get a lot more bang for the same buck. To explain why, Gladwell uses two theories. One theory was put forth in The Numbers Game<https://www.amazon.com/Numbers-Game-Everything-About-Soccer/dp/0143124560?t…>. In certain sports, the best team is that which focuses on its best player. For instance, in basketball, a single player can change the outcome of the game through simply superior skill to score three-pointers. This makes basketball a “strong-link” sport. At the opposite end are “weak-link” sports. In soccer, for instance, there are very few opportunities to score, which means that every error can have a much greater impact on the outcome of the game. So the best team is that which strengthens its weakest player. The other theory was put forth by economist Joel Mokyr of Northwestern University. Mokyr wanted to find out why the Industrial Revolution began in the UK and not in France or Germany. One answer was that the UK had more geniuses, such as James Watt, who invented the steam engine. However, Mokyr’s analysis finds that, in fact, the reason it began in the UK is because it had a greater number of “mechanically minded backyard tinkerers” than anyone else. Like the UK in the 19th century, Gladwell argues the US is entering a new Industrial Revolution. This revolution, too, is a weak-link phenomenon—which means the US must focus on improving the ability produce far more highly skilled people than invest in producing a handful of geniuses. Nothing changes After looking at the disparities in tax subsidies received by elite institutions compared to others, many economists suggested that a progressive endowment tax is a fair way of redistributing wealth to poorer institutions. Sadly, however, none such proposals have come to fruition. For instance, in the latest example, the cash-strapped state of Connecticut attempted to levy just such a tax<http://qz.com/648354/should-we-tax-rich-american-colleges-one-us-state-is-g…> on Yale University’s $26-billion endowment earlier this year. Within weeks, it quietly dropped the legislation<http://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2016-04-08/connecticut-drops-proposa…> because of a lack of internal support. We may assume that philanthropists must surely give money with the sole aim of doing the most good that their money can do. But, in fact, most philanthropists don’t think about that. A lot of them give the money because they are alumni of those institutions. Others give it because they get to put their name to a cause and thus secure a legacy. So far, almost all donations of $100 million or more given to a US educational institution have gone to elite institutions. Harvard’s $7 billion shows that the trend is unlikely to change. Baidu follows US tech giants and open sources its deep learning tools
by Marco Ciurcina Sept. 5, 2016

Sept. 5, 2016

Mi pare d'interesse per la lista sotto diversi aspetti. http://www.theverge.com/2016/9/1/12725804/baidu-machine-learning-open-sourc… Baidu follows US tech giants and open sources its deep learning tools Microsoft, Google, Facebook, and Amazon have all done it — and now Baidu's doing it, too. The Chinese tech giant has open sourced one of its key machine learning tools, PaddlePaddle, offering the software up to the global community of AI researchers. This move has become common among tech firms as they pour more and more resources into their AI work. Open sourcing your tools is a good way to attract talent, but it also allows companies to shape the development of a field that's becoming increasingly central to consumer tech, underpinning everything from voice interfaces to auto-sorting photo galleries. Baidu's big claim for PaddlePaddle is that it's easier to use than rival programs. Like Amazon's DSSTNE and Microsoft's CNTK, PaddlePaddle offers a toolkit for deep learning, but Baidu says comparable software is designed to work in too many different situations, making it less approachable to newcomers. Xu Wei, the leader of Baidu's PaddlePaddle development, tells The Verge that a machine translation program written with Baidu's software needs only a quarter of the amount of code demanded by other deep learning tools. ...

Sept. 3, 2016

*Microsoft gets support in gag order lawsuit from U.S. companies* Fri Sep 2, 2016 | 8:01 PM EDT By Dustin Volz | WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Technology, media, pharmaceutical and other companies, along with major corporate lobbying groups, filed legal briefs on Friday in support of a Microsoft Corp lawsuit that aims to strike down a law preventing companies from telling customers the government is seeking their data. Friday was the deadline for filing of friend-of-the-court briefs by nonparticipants in the case. The filings show broad support for Microsoft and the technology industry in its latest high-profile clash with the U.S. Justice Department over digital privacy and surveillance. Microsoft's backers included the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the National Association of Manufacturers, Delta Air Lines Inc, Eli Lilly and Co, BP America, the Washington Post, Fox News, the National Newspaper Association, Apple Inc, Alphabet Inc's Google, Amazon.com Inc, the Electronic Frontier Foundation and many others. NYT: "How Tech Giants Are Devising Real Ethics for Artificial Intelligence"
by J.C. DE MARTIN Sept. 3, 2016

Sept. 3, 2016

*How Tech Giants Are Devising Real Ethics for Artificial Intelligence* By JOHN MARKOFF September 1, 2016 SAN FRANCISCO — For years, science-fiction moviemakers have been making us fear the bad things that artificially intelligent machines might do to their human creators. But for the next decade or two, our biggest concern is more likely to be that robots will take away our jobs or bump into us on the highway. Now five of the world’s largest tech companies are trying to create a standard of ethics around the creation of artificial intelligence. While science fiction has focused on the existential threat of A.I. to humans, researchers at Google’s parent company, Alphabet, and those from Amazon, Facebook, IBM and Microsoft have been meeting to discuss more tangible issues, such as the impact of A.I. on jobs, transportation and even warfare. Tech companies have long overpromised what artificially intelligent machines can do. In recent years, however, the A.I. field has made rapid advances in a range of areas, from self-driving cars and machines that understand speech, like Amazon’s Echo device, to a new generation of weapons systems that threaten to automate combat.
