*How Tech Giants Are Devising Real Ethics for Artificial Intelligence* By JOHN MARKOFF September 1, 2016 SAN FRANCISCO — For years, science-fiction moviemakers have been making us fear the bad things that artificially intelligent machines might do to their human creators. But for the next decade or two, our biggest concern is more likely to be that robots will take away our jobs or bump into us on the highway. Now five of the world’s largest tech companies are trying to create a standard of ethics around the creation of artificial intelligence. While science fiction has focused on the existential threat of A.I. to humans, researchers at Google’s parent company, Alphabet, and those from Amazon, Facebook, IBM and Microsoft have been meeting to discuss more tangible issues, such as the impact of A.I. on jobs, transportation and even warfare. Tech companies have long overpromised what artificially intelligent machines can do. In recent years, however, the A.I. field has made rapid advances in a range of areas, from self-driving cars and machines that understand speech, like Amazon’s Echo device, to a new generation of weapons systems that threaten to automate combat. In attesa della discussione sulla proposta di direttiva, si torna a parlare di tassa sui link e geoblocking giovedì 1 settembre 2016 di Claudio Tamburrino /Roma - Nuove indiscrezioni sulla proposta di riforma del copyright a livello europeo confermano le più pessimistiche anticipazioni: dall'estensione della tutela del diritto d'autore a favore degli editori fino all'erosione dei principi di non responsabilità degli intermediari previsto dalla direttiva Europea 31/2000/CE. A sollevare un polverone stavolta è la bozza della Direttiva di riforma della disciplina del copyright nel Mercato Digitale Unico, che rispetto al piano di azione diffuso nei giorni scorsi fornisce maggiori dettagli sulle intenzioni delle istituzioni europee: in ogni caso conferma la volontà di abbracciare la causa degli editori a discapito di tutte quelle voci che spingevano per una visione progressista della tutela della proprietà intellettuale online. The idea is that you feed a bunch of data into a mysterious algorithm, and poof, out comes intelligence about the future that tells police where the next crime is going to occur, or even who is going to commit it. What’s not to get excited about? Unfortunately, many predictions made by policing software don’t come true. This is because predictive tools are only as good as the data they are fed. Put another way: garbage in, garbage out. Data collected by police is notoriously bad (we don’t even know how many people police kill every year), easily manipulated, glaringly incomplete, and too often undermined by racial bias. When you feed a predictive tool contaminated data, it will produce polluted predictions. In fact, it appears predictive policing software is more accurate at predicting policing than predicting crime. Rather than informing us where criminals will be and when they will commit crimes, these algorithms more reliably predict where the police will deploy. He was suffering from bipolar disorder and needed time to get treatment. A year and a half later, Kyle was healthy enough to return to his studies at a different university. Around that time, he learned from a friend about a part-time job. It was just a minimum-wage job at a Kroger supermarket, but it seemed like a sure thing. His friend, who was leaving the job, could vouch for him. For a high-achieving student like Kyle, the application looked like a formality. But Kyle didn’t get called in for an interview. When he inquired, his friend explained to him that he had been “red-lighted” by the personality test he’d taken when he applied for the job. The test was part of an employee selection program developed by Kronos, a workforce management company based outside Boston. When Kyle told his father, Roland, an attorney, what had happened, his father asked him what kind of questions had appeared on the test. Kyle said that they were very much like the “five factor model” test, which he’d been given at the hospital. The EU says it won't allow mobile carriers to deploy network-level ad blocking

The EU published its long-awaited net neutrality guidelines on Tuesday to clarify how internet service providers in the region should handle the data they handle over their networks.Buried within the document, as The Financial Times noted on Wednesday, is a clause that essentially outlaws network level ad blocking, a relatively new technique that has seen carriers test implementing technology in their data centers to block ads served over their network as their customers use apps and the mobile web."ISPs [internet service providers] should not block, slow down, alter, restrict, interfere with, degrade or discriminate advertising when providing an IAS [internet access service,]" the clause, on paragraph 78 of the Body of European Regulators for Electronic Communications (BEREC) guidelines, states.[...] http://uk.businessinsider.com/eu-blocks-network-level-ad-blocking-2016-8 Che ne pensate?f.
