Grazie!!, s. -- meet me at http://me.quintarelli.it blog: http://blog.quintarelli.it web clips: http://clips.quintarelli.it tumblr: http://stefanoquintarelli.tumblr.com

Moral panic over fake news hides the real enemy – the digital giants
by Alberto Cammozzo Jan. 13, 2017

Jan. 13, 2017

<https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2017/jan/08/blaming-fake-news-not…> Democracy is drowning in fake news. This is the latest reassuring conclusion drawn by those on the losing side of 2016, from Brexit to the US elections to the Italian referendum. [] Hence the recent surfeit of misguided solutions: ban internet memes (proposed by Spain’s ruling party); establish commissions of experts to rule on the veracity of news (a solution floated by Italy’s antitrust chief); set up centres of defence against fake news while fining the likes of Twitter and Facebook for spreading them (an approach suggested by German authorities). This last proposal is a great way to incentivise Facebook to promote freedom of expression – the same Facebook that has recently censored a photo of the nude statute of Neptune in the centre of Bologna for being too obscene! A tip for authoritarian governments: if you want to get away with online censorship, just label any articles you do not like as fake news and no one in the west will ever complain about it [] Caught between the two denials, the elites will never stop searching for innovative solutions to the problem of fake news – much as they never stopped searching for innovative solutions to climate change. The two issues do have a certain similarity: just as climate change is the natural byproduct of fossil capitalism, so is fake news the byproduct of digital capitalism.

USACM Issues Statement on Algorithmic Transparency and Accountability
by Enrico Nardelli Jan. 12, 2017

Jan. 12, 2017

The ACM US Public Policy Council (USACM), recognizing the ubiquity of algorithms in our daily lives, as well as their far-reaching impact, has issued a statement and a list of seven principles designed to address potential harmful bias.... The goals of the statement include: providing context for what algorithms are, how they make decisions, and the technical challenges and opportunities to prevent and mitigate potential harmful bias. The USACM statement asserts that these principles should guide every phase of software system development and deployment. “Algorithmic bias can occur even with the best of intentions,” said Stuart Shapiro, USACM Chair. “This is, in part, due to the fact that both software development and its products can be complex and produce unanticipated results. Following these principles cannot guarantee that there will be no biased algorithms or biased outputs. But they will serve to keep computing professionals on the lookout for ways biases could creep into systems and provide guidelines on how to minimize the potential for harm.” The Statement on Algorithmic Transparency and Accountability was designed to be consistent with ACM’s Code of Ethics <https://ethics.acm.org>. The effort was initiated by USACM’s Algorithmic Accountability Working Group. Mass Surveillance Across Europe
by Antonio Casilli Jan. 11, 2017

Jan. 11, 2017

Germany, France and the UK are moving the EU to continuous, unaccountable, warrantless mass surveillance Recent surveillance laws in Germany, France and the UK require online service providers to store (undoubtedly leaky and infinitely toxic) databases of everything you do online, and allow government agencies to raid these databases without accountability or meaningful oversight). https://boingboing.net/2017/01/11/germany-france-and-the-uk-are.html

Jan. 11, 2017

Gent.me/mi segnalo convegno di interesse *Big Data e Privacy. Cordiali saluti Mauro Alovisio
