We are looking for someone who is capable of teaching a broad range of subjects, and who has a research specialization in ethics and/or political philosophy with a (future) focus on technology - for instance, sustainability and environmental technology, health and medical technology, robotics and information technology, or broader ethical studies of technology and society. *The Challenge* You teach in the master program in Philosophy of Science, Technology and Society (PSTS; https://www.utwente.nl/en/psts/) with an emphasis on teaching in ethics and/or political philosophy, and you teach philosophy courses for bachelor and master programs in engineering and social science. These will include courses in professional and applied ethics as well as other philosophical subjects, for example, depending on your competencies, philosophy of science, philosophy of technology, or philosophy of mind. You are involved in the supervision of master’s theses in the PSTS program. You perform research in the area of ethics and/or political philosophy, with a focus on technology and its role in society. We are open to all specialties within this scope (e.g., environmental ethics in relation to sustainability and technology, ethics of medical technology, ethics and politics of robotics and AI, etc.) Your research will be embedded in the department’s research program as well as in the 4TU.Center of Excellence for Ethics and Technology (www.ethicsandtechnology.eu) a joint center of the departments of philosophy of the University of Twente, Delft University of Technology, Eindhoven University of Technology and Wageningen University which currently counts over sixty members, including twenty-four PhD students. *Your profile* You hold a Ph.D. in philosophy, preferably with a specialization in ethics or political philosophy. You have either had a focus on technology in your past research or you have a demonstrable interest in focusing on technology and it implications for society for your future research. You already have an excellent list of publications in peer-refereed journals, and have relevant international experience. We welcome candidates with a focus on any technology. You also have experience in teaching at the university level, preferably including students in science & engineering, social science, or other nonphilosophical fields, and preferably including professional and/or applied ethics/political philosophy. You have demonstrable didactic skills in teaching, good teaching evaluations, and a passion for teaching. You are able and willing to teach in areas of philosophy outside your philosophical specialization, both in philosophy at large and in the philosophy and ethics of technology.
by A Dicorinto April 6, 2017

April 6, 2017

Digital countercultures and the struggle for community
by Antonio Vetrò April 6, 2017

April 6, 2017

Segnalo questo interessante libro della MIT Press, che analizza come alcune comunità appartenenti alla c.d. contro-cultura abbiano adattato le tecnologie internet ai propri valori culturali di contesto: Digital Countercultures and the Struggle for Community di Jessa Lingel https://mitpress.mit.edu/books/digital-countercultures-and-struggle-communi… Overview Whether by accidental keystroke or deliberate tinkering, technology is often used in ways that are unintended and unimagined by its designers and inventors. In this book, Jessa Lingel offers an account of digital technology use that looks beyond Silicon Valley and college dropouts-turned-entrepreneurs. Instead, Lingel tells stories from the margins of countercultural communities that have made the Internet meet their needs, subverting established norms of how digital technologies should be used. Lingel presents three case studies that contrast the imagined uses of the web to its lived and often messy practicalities. She examines a social media platform (developed long before Facebook) for body modification enthusiasts, with early web experiments in blogging, community, wikis, online dating, and podcasts; a network of communication technologies (both analog and digital) developed by a local community of punk rockers to manage information about underground shows; and the use of Facebook and Instagram for both promotional and community purposes by Brooklyn drag queens. Drawing on years of fieldwork, Lingel explores issues of alterity and community, inclusivity and exclusivity, secrecy and surveillance, and anonymity and self-promotion. By examining online life in terms of countercultural communities, Lingel argues that looking at outsider experiences helps us to imagine new uses and possibilities for the tools and platforms we use in everyday life. About the Author Jessa Lingel is an Assistant Professor of Communication at the Annenberg School for Communication, University of Pennsylvania. -- Antonio Vetrò, Ph.D. Director of Research Nexa Center for Internet and Society DAUIN, Politecnico di Torino https://nexa.polito.it/people/avetro

Call for paper, Digital Universities in the MOOC Naples 20-22 September
by Eleonora Panto April 4, 2017

April 4, 2017

Grazie Eleonora ============ *Digital Universities in the MOOC Era: Redesigning Higher Education* The digitalisation of higher education, as a consequence of technological development, has long been confined to providing more efficient management systems. Only recently has the digital culture made a major inroad into academic life, with the diffusion of MOOCs, Massive Open Online Courses, as the new e-learning format to deliver top quality content for free to millions of students worldwide. While HE Institutions are broadening access to their academic offer to online users worldwide, the corporate and NGO sectors are exploring the benefits of a more qualified online approach to training and dissemination for both personnel and clients, as well as the general public. The unbundling of the different processes involved in education delivery, especially credentialing, with the emergence of new actors on the educational market leads us to question what the future holds for traditional HE. What are the new social demands? How do educational institutions intend to cope with these fast-changing audiences and targets? Are corporate MOOCs a fierce competitor to HE institutions or a worthy ally? The answers lie in the intersection among digital culture and educational environments. Bringing together people from government, academia and media, the ICEM International conference 2017 intends to focus on the emerging of MOOCs as a disruptive innovation in the traditional academic eco-system. We are looking for high profile speakers and contributors to shed light on specific aspects of these four strands: *Digital culture and educational environments* The advent of MOOCs has opened up new, and previously unthinkable, scenarios in higher education. Millions of learners are now aware of this extraordinary offer, and platforms are mushrooming all over in the world. As MOOCs become part of the established institutional offer, HE institutions have to work out how these new distance learning models fit with traditional institutional curricular design and development, teaching, credentialing and research practices. What is the strategic response to funding constraints and the need for flexible provision? Are MOOCs destined to become a new form of shadow education? How is the MOOC phenomenon going to be institutionalized? *Space vs. Interface design* A key aspect is the relationship between MOOC formats and instructional design. One might expect MOOCs to play the same disruptive role that books and printing literacy played in XV century learning. However, books had a well-established format and interface that MOOCs do not have yet. How to create an interface culture for the digital education? How much do learning space and format influence education? How can the user experience be improved both in the classroom and the digital world? *Platformism – new paradigms in online learning* Today, two giant operating systems – Microsoft MsDos and Apple Os – dominate the computer world, with two ancillary developments – Android and iOS – controlling the mobile environment. In the Higher Education environment there is still open competition among traditional e-learning software solutions and those offered by the main MOOC providers. How is platformism influencing learning environments, and what operational conditions are necessary for learners to exercise their choices? Moreover, should we expect a new oligopoly to emerge, concentrating the best of higher education in a few giant hubs with their proprietary formats and platforms? *Going visual: video language and pedagogy* Finally, it seems that video is here to stay. Talking heads, interactive videos, virtual labs augmented reality; all kinds of magic can be reproduced through our screens. How do we expect the traditional student-teacher relationship to be reshaped with the new opportunities web-videos are offering to provide top quality educational resources in a distance-learning environment? What is the role of quality and aesthetics and personalisation? How do we accommodate the changing relationships between teacher and student in the online environment? *The conference is organised by ICEM and Federica WebLearning Center (federica.eu <http://federica.eu/>). software libero a Torino
by Marco Ciurcina April 4, 2017

April 4, 2017
